A 'WAR' Over Water?: Bundy Ranch, the Federal Government, and the Nevada Water Tipping Point

A 'WAR' Over Water?: Bundy Ranch, the Federal Government, and the Nevada Water Tipping Point

By Monica Morrill
April 12, 2014

Many Americans have been watching with great consternation the ongoing struggle between the Federal Bureau of Land Management (BLM) and the U.S. Marshals against Cliven Bundy and his family. There are no signs of either side relinquishing its position. Many onlookers have been informed that this dispute is over protecting the desert tortoise. But it is nothing of the sort. In fact, the reality of the dispute goes far underneath what is being talked about. The more appropriate source of the dispute is ground water as well as surface water – this is a war over water.

The article is incorrect

The article is incorrect where it states the following:

Cliven Bundy and his family claim that they can trace their family ownership back to around the 1870s

and

to reclaim the settlement rights they once honored to settlers like the Bundys.

The thing is, Cliven Bundy is not claiming ownership or settlement rights over the 600,000 acres of land. To put that in perspective, that would be the size of 75% of the state of Rhode Island.

As stated on Bundy's website, it's grazing rights which are of issue, not land ownership rights. His website states:

"This weekend the confrontation got worse, when the feds hired contract cowboys to start seizing Cliven Bundy's cattle, which have been grazing on public land managed by the Bureau of Land Management."

I just wanted to point out that error. It's not that they are saying they own the land but that they have rights to graze cattle on that public land.

Do We Know All He Claims? I Don't, Maybe This Author Knows

Do We Know All He Claims? I Don't, Maybe This Author Knows

Cliven Bundy and his family claim that they can trace their family ownership back to around the 1870s on their current property in Clark County. This is well before any federal offices such as the EPA, BLM, or water management were created. This corresponds with the Homestead rights that were established during the Lincoln administration in 1862 to entice people to settle the western frontier and expand the U.S. agricultural enterprises. This 19th-century policy was meant to encourage and support settlement by families like the Bundys. Now, over 150 years later, what seemed to be borderless country surrounding small-town Bunkerville in Nevada is an inhospitable petri dish for the experiments of growing federal regulations.

John2k, I appreciate you pointing out a possible inaccuracy in this article, however, the main point of the article is how the tyranny of government force is trying to deprive a liberty loving Nevadan rancher the right to be left alone to raise his cattle in peace.

Thank you for posting John2k

Water rights, oil rights, Agenda 21 & United Nations'

plan for the United States (as per the U.N. published map of the future for the U.S.A.), i.e. with federal gov't taking over land and land use and people limited to specified corridors and urban areas. The Bundy Family is going to need a whole heap of support to go against TPTB here.

Thanks, emalvini

The more this pot gets stirred the more it stinks! Have you seen this previous incident in NV a rancher named Wayne Hage? 2013 article:

Government's Shocking Interference in Rancher's Life

A startling decision on government wrongdoing by a federal court in U.S. v. Estate of E. Wayne Hage gives credence to those who say that the federal government is engaging in a “war on the West” that is hurting rural communities. It is a stark reminder of how powerful our federal government is today and how it can ruin the lives and businesses of American citizens.

The 104-page opinion by U.S. District Court Judge Robert C. Jones on May 23 in Nevada tells a sordid and infuriating tale of a two-decades-long conspiracy among federal employees of the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) of the Department of the Interior to deny the grazing rights of a Nevada ranching family, interfere with their water rights, and destroy their cattle business by scaring away their customers.

I made it a topic

just now. Bookmark it for when you have time because it shows the same pattern of tactics by BLM and is about water rights.

Nice...

Thanks so much LittleWing..

It's A Disgusting "Travesty" That The United States Government..

couldn't deploy the same resources they have sent to a 'trespassing' rancher.....

to rescue the four men they abandoned in Benghazi....

Everything I've Read Indicates To Me That This Is FAR From Over

Cliven Bundy better keep his family and friends close by because this is far from over. If the BLM can't steal his land and cattle they're going to have him murdered. The government has its marching orders and the BLM is not going away for long.

The government needs all of his land and cattle out of the way and soon.

They will not stop until this is accomplished..

Please everyone, pray for Cliven and his family...

WOW! What A Great Article - REVEALING!

Cliven Bundy: The last large cattle rancher in Clark County! Wow!

It must be weird and sad to

It must be weird and sad to be the last rancher. I am one of the youngest Cattlemen in my County, I assume.

Ditto: good work SJ

Was hard to keep up with everything the last few days but proud of the DP coverage and comments! I hope you can stick with the ranching. I used to compete long distance trail riding when I had my horses and seeing all that open range today made me want to saddle up and head west! I just posted above to emalvini a story similar to Bundys that happened in NV also, check it out.

The Bundy Ranch “VO” is now

The Bundy Ranch “VO” is now the last large cattle ranch standing in Clark County. According to an anonymous source who has lived in Nevada for thirty-five years, the other major ranches in Clark County have been driven out of existence for one reason or another by the BLM and the Feds. It is claimed that the BLM are masquerading as conservationists, using their federal power to wield the final blow to reclaim the settlement rights they once honored to settlers like the Bundys.

The real wealth is in the water to support the plush green golf courses, and surrounding housing developments, gleaming swimming pools, and other demands by hotels and households in Las Vegas, Arizona, and Southern California.
