What's the best rod for disciplining your child?

Proverbs 13:24 tells us that "who spares the rod hates his son, but he who loves him is careful to discipline him."

Since we are supposed to take the Bible literally, I would like advice on the best rod to show my love. A bare hand just won't do. The Bible doesn't say "he who spares the spanking hand." It clearly calls for a rod.

What do you guys think of rattan? It has that cool look and makes that scary sound as you swing it through the air. But it doesn't seem durable. What about metal? It might be tiring to swing a heavy metal rod all day, as there is lots of discipline to dish out.

What about just a plain old PVC pipe? It's cheap and rather elastic. Should I wrap it up in some duct tape so it doesn't leave a mark?

And what about a rod for the old ball and chain? I am going to see what the experts have to say on the subject:

Giving up a 4 year old for others to take of, is equivalent to an abortion in which the unborn baby has it's life terminated? You really believe that, or should I put on my rubber boots, because it's getting deep.

who says we should take the

who says we should take the bible literally? man? pffttt!!!

I assume op and some others has an issue understanding discipline vs beating someone up. I was spanked never abused and I know right from wrong. was I beaten ? NO!!! was I disciplined? Yes. you can only define that for yourself.

Hahaha...why so many downvotes?

Too many here unappreciative of the dark humor or is it the mocking of your favorite book?

Lies - And you fill their souls
With all oppressions of this world
And all the glory you receive?
So, What makes you supreme?
Lies - Your crown is falling
I offer fantasy
And you, you creator are
Blind with envy

Let the children come to me
Their mother loves me, so shall they
Woman, bleeding, ate my gifts
Man was close behind
Just like a snake I'm slithering
Thru my world divine
And like the cat I'm stalking
I'll take your soul and You'll
Be like me
In emptiness, free

Just bow to me faithfully
Bow to me splendidly

Another post for you to troll people about spanking,

how many more do you need?

My recommendation is that you have a bunch of kids and don't spank them. If my spanked kid tries to rob your house, shoot them, otherwise it's none of your business how others raise their kids.

Unless you are advocating the solution to stop the violence of spanking is to send thugs with guns to raid everyone's homes?

I think this thread has

I think this thread has more to do with interpreting "holy books" than it does with disciplining children.

Good point.

The OP doesn't submit to God, and has a problem with children submitting to a wise and loving parent. The poster has adopted a chosen mindset, yet has a belief that others can be debated out of theirs.

Hebrew is a very picturesque

Hebrew is a very picturesque language with a lot of very elastic words. Try looking at Jeff Benner's the Ancient Hebrew Lexicon of the Bible for a great explanation of Hebrew linguistic thought. Then confer the entry for rod in that verse (number 2805).

If people concentrated on the really important things in life

there'd be a shortage of fishing rods.

totally agree with that sentiment

Although I have been too busy with getting the garden ready to go fishing yet. Gardens are important as well. But man, I can't wait to go out and work my fly rod.

Great for boys: fishing rod, girls may prefer wooden spoon

approach; most girls like to learn to bake , and it gives them priceless time with you. (For the perplexed, my intent is to imply that spending time with them is far more the intent of Biblical discipline. Understanding their unique bent is as well, some children will do wonders with a pen and paper, both linguistically and artistically. Others will solve puzzles: logic, math and crossword...)

Let your children find their own rod. Let 'em learn to use it.

Teach 'em self reliance, patience & discipline. Watch quietly, lest you scare the fish away.

The fishing rod

I have found that a good days fishing trip offers time to converse with the kids and offer those little gems of life that often never get to be discussed at the table or while tooling around in the car.

RAND PAUL or NOT AT ALL

...

The best rod would probably be the one you are beating that dead horse with.

NOTE: I am not advocating violence in any way. The content of the post is for intellectual, theoretical, and philosophical discussion. FEDS, please don't come to my house.

reason

is the rod I used.

If you're looking for a good rod ...

... and you want to be consistent with the examples set by the Bible's god, then you probably want one that imposes the most pain and suffering possible.

What does ROD mean?

It's a long stick or it's a measuring device. Where does it say that
"spare the rod" means "refuse to spank"? When did rod become synonymous to spank? If that was the true intent then all parents better start whacking their children with 5 1/2 yard long sticks.

I mean if in meant spank, wouldn't it have been written "strike" or "punish" or something of similar meaning?

If rod in this instance means measuring device, then the passage would read"

"He that spareth his ,measure hateth his son: but he that loveth him chasteneth him betimes."

Then it would mean: He who doesn't watch his child, gauge how the child is doing, or see that he is living well and correctly, hates his child: but he that loves his child reprimands (disciplines) him early on

Discipline or reprimand does not necessarily mean hit. Only if you want it to.

I posted this in the spanking post and got 3 negatives...wonder how many I'll get this time.

Sometimes ...

a mere upvote is not enough when sailing in a sea of ass beaters and a personal comment of appreciation for any wisdom conveyed is required.

This is one of the best posts on the thread

and I bet a fair look at the Hebrew, without bias (KJV) would confirm your theory.

Wouldn't the least adulterated hebrew translations be found in..

The Coptic or Alexandrian bibles? Or the version the Eastern Rite uses (not Eastern Orthodox)? None of the above were RCC bibles and have direct translations that weren't filtered through Aramaic. Not 100% certain, but pretty certain.

How dare you insult The Lord James!

How dare you insult The Lord James! Repent, thou sinner, or you shall not be spared the rod of Lord James himself!

On a more serious note, you guy's are right. Hebrew is a very picturesque language with a lot of very elastic words. The Bible?

Not my first source to go to on child rearing.....

ralph you are not alone

there was a time, 100 years past, when the bible was the go to for child rearing and every other aspect of life.

Now most, like you, would not look to the bible for child rearing or anything else. The public behavior of children towards their parents demonstrates what the right course should be.
