Sen. Paul: End Aid to Palestinian Government until They Recognize Israel’s Right to Exist

Will introduce measure this week in Congress

Apr 28, 2014 - WASHINGTON, D.C. - Sen. Rand Paul today released the following statement regarding his measure to make future aid to the Palestinian government conditional upon agreeing to a ceasefire and recognizing the right of Israel to exist:

"The recent announcement of a Fatah-Hamas unity agreement brings both danger and opportunity to the peace process, and the next five weeks may prove critical.

Israel cannot be expected to negotiate with an entity that does not believe it should exist and that has used terrorist tactics to seek its end.

That being said, the new unity government has a chance to put itself on the record as clearly believing in the right of Israel to exist as a Jewish state, as Israel recognizes the right of a Palestinian state to exist. It should also declare an immediate and lasting ceasefire to enable negotiations.

If that is accomplished swiftly, the peace process can move forward with two willing partners.

In the absence of such a clear, unambiguous statement on the part of the newly unified Palestinian government, the United States should act to enforce the law and cut off aid to the Palestinian government until they recognize Israel's right to exist.

I will introduce a measure when Congress returns this week to make all future aid to the Palestinian government conditional upon this statement, with a cutoff date of five weeks from now if, upon its formation, the new government does not take this vital step toward peace."

What are the percentages...

Hi Steve,
What do the percentages work out to if you add in all the US military aid to Israel's enemies?

Yes all aid should be ended but alas I expect it to end only when the dollar loses its reserve currency status.

I think there's more to it

I think there's more to it than you know.

Just trust. More non-transparency & secret agendas.

That stuff is what we have been dealing with forever it seems. Maintaining the status quo coming from the son of Ron Paul? That is especially discomforting to me.

In answer to your question:

As of October 1, 2012, USAID has ended its programs in Russia. Please visit the U.S. Embassy Moscow website for additional information on USAID's departure from Russia.
Answer: Russia said keep you damn money.
Russia tells US: We don't want your aid money

So Russia ended it.

So Russia ended it.

Very Sad to Read This

I realize that Rand is playing the game, but this is tough to read. As someone who has studied the conflict in depth it is hard to read Rand say that the Palestinians utilize terrorist attacks (which is undeniably true) while not mentioning Israel's far greater and more cruel terrorist attacks against the Palestinians. I guess this is what it takes to win the Presidency, but at what cost to our principle? The Palestinian people face immense suffering every day, and this just seems to be another slap in their face to call them out when others commit atrocities in greater number (i.e. Israel, NATO, etc.). A better policy position would be to demand foreign aid to no countries including Israel because foreign aid usually does nothing to help starving people, and is often used for war-making purposes.

Ummm ok I guess

The first question that comes to mind is: Why don't we end the aid to Israel first since Israel's aid dwarfs that received by Palestinians. Oh wait I get it. Principles are only good when they coincide with the Republican agenda. I wonder when Rand is going to actually do something of significance. Every time he does some trivial thing everyone stands up and says "Oh my God this guy is going to change the world!" Hopefully the Rand voters don't have to learn the same lesson the Obama voters did.

He should say, "no aid to anyone"...

But this is a step in that direction. The U.S. government is taking Americans money through taxes and giving as 'aid' to the Palestinian authority, just like it is for the Israeli government. So we are funding both sides! That is just crazy... like a fox. The corporatist MIC makes a ton of money funding all sides of all conflicts. And the NWO gets a nice geo-political pivot point.

As for his points about Israel can't be expected to negotiate with a group that that refuses to recognize it's sovereignty, and the Israeli peoples' right to be there, he is absolutely correct.

Are you a POT or a PET - Person Embracing Tyranny?

Yet you think the

Yet you think the Palestinians should negotiate w a state that has refused to affirm Palestine's right to exist? And the PA has repeatedly affirmed Israel's right to exist. I think it was a mistake, but it is official Palestinian policy.

Palestine has NEVER existed as a sovereign Nation

The PA does not claim to recognize Israel's right to exist, stop lying. And then there's the PLO, Hamas, Hezbollah, etc...

20% of Israel's population are Arab-Muslims. They have all the same rights as every other Israeli.

One state solution is the answer.

"Palestine" only exists, and the only reasons there's a wall is because radical-Muslim jihadists refuse to live peacefully alongside "infidels"/non-Muslims in Israel, as the PA, PLO & Hamas teach hatred of Jews to their children systematically, and so they constantly attack and murder innocent Israeli people.

Yes, the Israeli have done some brutal, outright wrong things in retaliation. But a lot of the seemingly violent tactics are nothing but self-defense.

Again, at least 20% of Israel's population is Arab-Muslim, and they enjoy all the same rights as other Israelis.

Over 180,000 Muslims CHOSE to join Israel in 1948. The others CHOSE to leave.

Oh Look, Granger's back

or a Granger clone - apologist for Israeli apartheid regime - yea! Good times again with Whack A Mole on DP

You clearly don't know me as a DP poster...

..and you clearly skipped the Jewish rapper thread...

Israel is NOT an "apartheid state" no matter how many times you repeat the lie, Goebbels.

Are you a POT or a PET - Person Embracing Tyranny?

You are simply wrong in.so

So what if Palestine was never an official state? Nor was Israel till 1948. AND, Palestine is now a state according to almost every nation. YOU are simply wrong in.so many ways. The PA had to recognize Israel to get the peace process started. I'll have to track down those official statements I guess. Also, Arabs don't have equal rights. Israeli marriage , education, housing, and immigration laws for example, all privilege JewishNess. Stop being such a Jewish supremacist. And those illegal colonies are Jewish only! UPDATE!: the PLO officially recognized Israel as early as 1993. Google it.

Go read a Bible dude...

Israel is over 3500 years old.

The land was Israel when Rome conquered it and named it "Palestine".

There was never a "Palestinian" people. Unless you want to count the biblical Philistines.
The land was continuously under foreign occupation since Rome conquered Israel in 63 BC, until Jews finally took it back in 1948.

Israeli law sees Jews and non-Jews live alongside peacefully in Israel, under the same laws, equally. But it's the Muslims in 'Palestine' who refuse to live next to non-Muslims.
They indoctrinate their kids into Jew-hatred. Muslims are crucifying Christians in other parts of the middle-east... Egypt... Syria...

All modern accounts of the Holy Land as foreign run and occupied 'Palestine' before the re-establishment of the sovereign land of Israel in 1948 were of desolate, barren desert.

Since Israel was re-established the land has again flourished.
There are fruit orchards as far as the eye can see.
The agriculture is booming, and supplies premium produce around the world.
The free-market economy is doing tremendous relative to the surrounding theocratic Islamic dictatorships in the region.
The 20% Arab-Muslim population in Israel enjoy the same free-market economic success, they serve voluntarily in the I.D.F., and they represent positions of authority alongside their Jewish countrymen in the Israeli government, the Knesset.

Jewish people prosper because they handle their own business, and they work hard. They aren't wasting their time teaching their kids to hate, and blaming others for all their problems. Despite the constant hate and jealousy that they receive and have to spend time defending themselves from.

And yes, Jewish people are only human too, so it wears on individuals and some individuals can become just like the people that hate them, and they return that hate, in kind. Understandable, after 2000 years. Yeshua says to love your enemy, and the Torah says "delight not in the suffering of the wicked, but only if they turn from their wicked ways". So hate is not something I have. But I do understand all sides. Maybe some individuals here could benefit from Yeshua's perspective and try seeing it from the other side.

Under a one state solution, which may take a generation or two if Palestinians and Israeli both stop teaching each other to hate right now, all would be under equal rights, as Muslim-Israelis are right now. If there is a particular policy that is unpopular, it can always be changed via the democratic government that Israel has. ...Unlike the other nations in the region which are mostly Islamic theocracies.

Are you a POT or a PET - Person Embracing Tyranny?

You mean the agriculture is getting bulldozed

You're clearly a shill for the zio terrorists bulldozing down the ancient olive orchards that have been in Palestinian families for generations

No foreign aid is good for the people of that country and definitely not for the US tax payers. If he can reduce by a tiny bit, it is a step in the right direction.

I think it is a step in the right direction politically...

...Fiscally it won't make much of a dent, at all...

But politically it demonstrates the futility, the hypocrisy and the war-monger profiteering of the corporatist MIC that our representatives in government are lobbied to protect and promote.

I think it politically a step in the right direction to eventually end all foreign aid, which will THEN have an impact fiscally.

Not to mention the MORAL aspect, which is the main reason for ending the practice, and is also the most under-rated.

Are you a POT or a PET - Person Embracing Tyranny?

He has. And he says we should

He has. And he says we should start with the countries that __________ and _________. He talks about it all the time.

I don't think I remember ever ending foreign aid anywhere. Do you? I think Rand is trying to just end it somewhere...anywhere!

SteveMT's picture

Why not start with the biggest one? Afghanistan: $12.885B

Cutting 50% of that foreign aid would be five times as much as cutting the $1.2B given to Pakistan. Why not start with that?

Sure. Anyone at this point

Sure. Anyone at this point would be a good start. But when is the last time we ended any foreign aid anywhere? I'm thinking it would be easier to get approval if it's to "benefit" Israel. It's also a good way to expose others because it will never pass...but why? Think about it.

Rand is a genius

If you don't get what he's doing here, that's okay... It just proves that stealth political tactics actually work.

I have a problem with the "Stealth" theory...

So some of us at the Dailypaul wink and are in the know about this master plan of his, but TPTB don't? The CIA, Think Tanks, the NWO?

"I am Troll fighter, number one"

oh yes, simply brilliant.

oh yes, simply brilliant. see, once he's deceived and connived his way into the White House, why, then he'll usher in a regime of liberty that will shine through the ages. all he has to do is win. that's the key

It's ok. We're counting on you.

Yet more soul selling by Rand

Yet more soul selling by Rand Paul. Guess he's 100% running for President now… sigh

First, why would you care

First, why would you care about the conflict over there? Second, yes, let's end foreign aid to Palestine. Third, then let's end aid to Israel and everywhere else.

Wouldn't ending foreign aid ANYWHERE be in our best interest? I say do it.

and start with a place

his dad has compared to a concentration camp?

C'mon Davy, Ron wants to end

C'mon Davy, Ron wants to end foreign aid to them as well.

and i agree

"Paul said he would cut foreign aid as a whole and in doing so would treat “every country fairly,” implying Israel would get no special treatment from the U.S.
Since WWII Israel has been the largest cumulative beneficiary of U.S. foreign aid. Almost all of that aid is in the form of military assistance but the small democratic country has also received significant economic aid as well. The special treatment also allows Israel to receive the money within the first 30 days of the fiscal year; all other countries must receive aid in installments."

If that's the only place we can make a change!
