Driver Finds Himself Surrounded By Cops With Guns Out After Automatic License Plate Reader Misreads His Plate

by Tim Cushing - Mon, Apr 28th 2014 - TechDirt

Automatic license plate readers can scan plates at a rate of one per second. Nationwide, several hundred million plate/location records have been captured and stored by a variety of contractors.

Mathematics alone says mistakes will be made. Except when mistakes are made with ALPRs, they tend to put citizens on the bad side of men with guns.

Just innocent chat rooms, at first. Then, things got fuzzy.

Next thing I remember, I was surrounded....

Symptom of

the tightening net.

This is my backyard...

I live 1 mile outside of Prairie Village KS... I went to elementary, middle and high school in this city.

It's an uber-affluent suburban area where the crime rate is virtually 0%.

The police in Prairie Village spend the majority of their time writing speeding tickets or harassing teenagers with skateboards. (they also get a fair number of DUIs as the city is positioned between the bar districts and outer-suburbia.)

I'm not at all surprised to hear cops in this city broke protocol to try to get some action.

It's a good thing this particular individual was of European heritage. They likely would have shot him if he was of African origin...

At their inceptions, the #Liberty, #OccupyWallStreet and #TeaParty movements all had the same basic goal... What happened?

Stop the car - check the plate

Don't be treating people like criminals just to get a bonus.

Follow-up.
Get the name and addresses of the cops and conduct citizen raids in the middle of the night.
See how they like it. when you say, "Sorry, Wrong house."

Good idea 'Cuda!

Except we wouldn't shoot their dog.
Or taser grandpa.

Reminds me of the movie

Reminds me of the movie Brazil where a dead fly lands in the typwriter and changes the first letter of the suspects name as it is printed out thus setting off the gov't disappearance of the wrong person - a family man snatched out of his apt with the kids while watching TV.

The Rogue Plummer

was my favorite. :-)

Great Movie Victoria! "Brazil"

I really like that flick!
Everyone should watch it.

Ever since my first viewing many years ago,
I've had fears of government centralization of..."services".

This movie should be required viewing for Liberty Lovers.
Aside from the oppression/Liberty aspect, it's funny and entertaining!

Produced by Terry Gilliam of Monty Python's Flying Circus. 1985

So True...

Placing too much faith in an automated system can have terrible consequences. Molner came out of this without extra holes, electricity or bruises. Others may not be so lucky.
