Marlboro and my wife!

So let me just say I am sort of stunned at what my wife received in the mail today. She has been harassed by Marlboro for years and she does not smoke cigarettes. Today she actually received an ashtray with her initials in it as it is her birthday May 11th. Please keep in mind that she does not smoke and has NEVER contributed to the growth and market of Marlboro and their stems of death. They also sent instructions, yes instructions on how to clean the silicon/rubber ashtray?!

The funniest thing about the whole delivery was this disclaimer, provided on a separate piece of paper: "Nothing about our cigarettes or packaging, including color, should be interpreted to mean that any cigarette is safer than any other cigarette. Nothing about our cigarettes will help you quit smoking [them]."

Let me repeat, "Nothing about out cigarettes will help you quit smoking."

Yes Marlboro, please continue to solicit my wife, mother of two small children to pick up the horrific and tragic habit of inhaling deadly chemicals so she can leave them all the sooner, while involuntarily demonstrating how important it is to become a smoker of the chemicals that will someday end your life.

This is what we're up against!

Peace and Love always.

ok, ok...

I get it. This is frivolous to most. It was not upsetting but frustrating. If you all cannot see the irony in a company giving a birthday gift to someone who has never used their products, that is ok.

Does the Milkman Smoke?

..maybe she was ordering a "gift" for him?

I'd install video surveillance if this is that serious.

So you got a free

item in the mail that you can probably sell on craiglist for $5? Oh heavens me, I do declare the sky is fallin!

Oh

the horror

Since you obviously lean

Since you obviously lean towards liberal beliefs -- considering your disdain for smokers and/or Marlboro's right to advertise -- maybe you would just be willing to give it (the ashtray) away instead of complaining about it.

I have a bit of an issue with your claim though. I've been a smoker for years and I've more than registered with Marlboro for their goods. I had Marlboro Miles and tons of gear before the Gooberment forbid them from marketing to their customers.

In more recent years, I've been entered into their contests and have received countless fliers for their merchandise.

By law, the only way they can send you stuff is if at one point in time you actually provided verifiable identification to the company.

Remember the whole 'marketing to kids' thing? Well, because of that, Cigarette companies can not just send out random stuff. You MUST verify your identity with the company before they will send you anything.

So you can come here and complain about smokers and tobacco companies all you want -- but to those of us who know better -- Marlboro isn't just sending your random ashtrays with your initials.

wrong...

My wife has never provided ANY verifiable informatio of identity to Marlboro, EVER.

Well you know me so well what is left to say? Obviously I'm a "liberal" and have a "disdain" for smokers and Marlboro's rights to advertise because I find it odd that a company would market to someone in order to persuade a detriment to their health. I believe they have rights to advertise just as I have the right to question their advertising.

I've watched many within my family pass away from the effects of smoking, so excuse me if I take their advertisements a little serious. The free market? Yes, you are free despite the abhorrent effects of smoking cigarettes to continue to do so. You are free to become dependent on something that has no respect or care for your health or if you die from it.

Another Way To Look At It

Perhaps you can look at it another way. I try to promote my ideas on the Bible and on liberty throughout each day. I've also sold various products and needed to prospect the public to locate and persuade possible customers. I would not want that right taken away from me.

It seems to me that Marlboro might be wasting their money with their promotion practices, but they are operating within a free market. While I agree with a free market if private money is used, I am appalled when the government uses "tax money", confiscated at gun point, to promote Obamacare.

What we're up against?

Um, ever thought of throwing it away instead of opening it? It's a fairly easy solution. We all get stuff in the mail we don't want or need. I'm not married and a month or so ago a I got a trial-size box of tampons in the mail.. Should I holler that J&J is trying to emasculate me? Toss it or give it someone that can use it, it's no big deal.

Something also tells me we wouldn't have heard a word about it if the gift was a deck of cards or a pocketknife or anything else more useful to you than an ashtray. Don't kick a gift horse in the mouth, some of their stuff has nothing to do with smoking.

well...

"Don't kick a gift horse in the mouth, some of their stuff has nothing to do with smoking."

If they know your birthday despite having never purchased a single product from them, I would say it has everything to do with smoking, rather persuading you to pick up the habit.

I'm more ticked off by getting harrassed by the RNC

begging for money.

I have been smoking for over 14 years

And have never in my entire life ever recieved anything. Hell I used to do the free ciggarette nights at the bars. For those that don't know RJ Reynolds/ Altria go to every bar in the city twice a week giving out FREE ciggarettes and chew. If no one asks when they come you can get a carton or get others to give them to you.

I have gotten joke books from them

I did what they wanted me to do and showed it to my kids.

However, I used it as a way to educate them on the sneaky tactics used by marketers to target kids and manipulate them into buying unsafe products.

Use it for a place to put change or keys or whatever...

I always hate when I get something for free in the mail. It really pisses me off.

Isn't smoking pot much the same kind of thing?

I realise that there are about 500 dangerous chemicals in manufactured cigarettes but it is possible to buy natural cigarettes, made from tobacco, that do not contain these chemicals. These cigarettes are on a par with cannabis from that point of view but cannabis is also psychoactive and therefore is of questionable benefit if not actually deleterious. In spite of this there are active movements promoting more cannabis use as a source of health...very odd.

Perhaps these distinctions should be made when critiquing smoking as a recreational activity. After all a single puff of smoke from a diesel bus is more dangerous to those who breathe it in than 10,000 cigarettes. This is not to defend these manufactured cigarettes, just to point out that we are living in a dangerously polluted world, especially if we live in a city.

I am a non-smoker.

"Jesus answered them: 'Truly, truly, I say to you, everyone who commits sin is a slave to sin. The slave does not remain in the house forever; the son remains forever. So if the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed.'" (John 8:34-36)

Truth be told

There are far more chemicals in the PAPER of cigarettes than in the tobacco themselves. These same chemicals are in the rolling papers used for joints.

Smokers are disgusting and

Smokers are disgusting and annoying, and I make sure restaurants that accept smokers know that I won't be eating there because I want to taste my food when I eat.

Good!

Take your squealing brats to a smoke-free establishment and leave the rest of us alone.

HA HA! I'd Like a List

..of those restaurants....since it seems that smoking has been banned nation-wide in "eateries".

To label smokers in such a "negative" light is not very "Libertarian", is it?

Smoking is going out of

Smoking is going out of style. Yes many people do it still, but I dont see nearly as many people today as I did even 10 years ago. And many are trying to quit and that market is huge.
I have to wonder how much money they spend on sending this stuff out because it cant be too cheap when sending to many people.

To climb the mountain, you must believe you can.

Look harder

There are still plenty of us that smoke. But because people bucked under to the law that's complete bs, there are many places we cant smoke.
A friend in SC told me if your in certain areas of Greenville SC, you can not only not smoke on the side walk, you cant smoke in the park, and you cant even smoke in your own car.
Here where I am, bars that had just got up and starting doing good (we where dry for many many years) shut down fast because smokers told the owners they where just going to buy a bottle, a pack, and a big screen and invite friends over.
Lots of people I never thought that smoked turned out..their 'closet smokers'. They just don't do it in public cause they are tired of being judged.
As for Marlboro, Send them an email requesting they send you nothing else. Most times that works. If it doesn't, call them and tell them you'll be calling a lawyer..that should do it.

I believe in Hope & Change..I Hope the government will Change

It's not judgment really -

it's infringement.

The smoke literally makes me sick - for days. If the two customer bases could be isolated from one another that is fine with me. I just don't think it is fair to go to a public place (where I am paying for refreshment) and have to breathe in something that makes me ill.

It's not as though second hand smoke has not been proven to be harmful.

That's the bottom line...keep the smoke isolated with those who smoke.

The law cannot make a wicked person virtuous…God’s grace alone can accomplish such a thing.

I'm a non smoker but believe

I'm a non smoker but believe that individuals and business owners should be able to make decisions about if they smoke or if people can smoke in their establishments.

One of the most ironic things I have ever seen regarding cigs, though, were strict no smoking signs outside of a hospital at a drop off area where there are usually cars, vans & sometimes trucks idling away. Sure, it's no problem to run a truck right next to the door expelling fumes and keep it idling for 10 minutes but smoking is strictly prohibited for health reasons. A single vehicle is probably thousands of times more poisonous than a cigarette. It's ridiculous. If the air around there is so fragile to the point where smokers cannot smoke then I think it's reasonable that cars not be able to drive around there either.
