Michigan GOP leaves Justin Amash to fend for himself

In-state and national party support for congressman lacking

Washington— Not one fellow Michigan congressional Republican has donated money to U.S. Rep. Justin Amash in his competitive GOP primary race against Grand Rapids area businessman Brian Ellis.

In fact, two retiring congressmen said they are considering giving cash to the Cascade Township Republican’s opponent.

His GOP Michigan colleagues have funneled money to other vulnerable members, including Reps. Dan Benishek in the Upper Peninsula and Tim Walberg of Tipton.

U.S. Rep. Mike Rogers, the House Intelligence Committee chairman from Howell, has gone so far as to say he would “likely” support Ellis — a highly unusual move for a colleague to take against an incumbent from the same party. “I think he’d far better represent that district and the values that they hold true,” Rogers said.

House GOP leadership hasn’t backed Amash either, but Speaker John Boehner of Ohio and Majority Leader Eric Cantor of Virginia have contributed $20,000, combined, from their leadership political action committees for freshman Rep. Kerry Bentivolio of Milford, who also faces a heated primary challenge.

“This is extraordinary unusual,” said Norman Ornstein, congressional scholar at the American Enterprise Institute in Washington, D.C. “When you have leaders supporting a candidate against an incumbent, it’s clearly because they’ve been deeply frustrated because of what they see as a complete lack of loyalty on the part of the member.”

Of course

Any public official even close to supporting the Constitution and Bill of Rights by honestly upholding their oath of office and doing their job is demonized, attacked, and all support withdrawn.

Think of the classic scenario of a corrupt police dept - how do they treat the rookie that actually upholds the law?

They shut them out of the inner circles and plan how they are going to set him/her up.

Then during a firefight they all suddenly pull away and let them take the bullets.

Amash needs our support - I'm going to send money again, I hope others are also going to help stand up to these criminals.

Exactly! Good call

Von I agreed with your post so much I posted part of it to my FB as a quote with credit to you.

Sure thing ...

If it gets anyone to back Justin and support with a contribution than its all good!

When I read stories like this I know it's just the tip of the..

...iceberg and how the GOP has not learned one thing in the last 2 presiedntial cycles.

Even though Dr. Paul taught and taught and taught.

And when I hear stories like this I vow to do anything I can (especially as a PCO) to destroy the republican party as it is now.

As a semi-insider I'll work to destroy the establishment right in front of their noses.

Many are too stupid to catch on.

And many are worse than democrats because they CLAIM to be conservatives, but they support wars, occupations, our huge, bloated military welfare system and giving away U.S. foreign aid by the billions upon billions each year.

In past years I said I'd fight the establishment GOP right up to the point of voting for a democrat, but would never go that far.

I'm not so sure about that anymore.

A poster who knows the truth: "Justin is Michigan's Ron Paul."

Nice comment posted for this story.

Re-read the quote in the second to last graph; Amash is 100% right. Justin is Michigan's Ron Paul. He's trying to restrain the size, scope, cost and debt of our Federal Govt. Lobbyists don't like him because he can't be bought like most Dems and GOP members. GOP leadership can't stand that he won't tow the line that they're paid to tow. His vote isn't for sale. We need a couple hundred more just like him.

This just makes me want to donate to him again!

And I will! Today! :)

Thanks GOP ...

... for showing us who we can trust.

Newt Gingrich vs. Ron Paul all over again.

This is the same nonsense that went on when Ron Paul first got back to Congress in the 1990s. Gingrich repeatedly tried to get rid of Paul during his tenure as Speaker, and he failed every single time because the people in Paul's district weren't stupid. I am praying that the same is true of Amash's district.
