Rand Paul Rejects White House Drone Memo Offer

by Matt Sledge
05/06/2014 3:00 pm EDT

Kentucky Sen. Rand Paul (R) on Tuesday rejected a White House offer to let senators read a federal court nominee's memo authorizing a drone strike on a U.S. citizen, calling anything short of a full public release "inadequate."

Paul is threatening to block the federal appeals court nomination of David Barron, who wrote a Justice Department memo justifying a drone strike against alleged al Qaeda commander Anwar al-Awlaki, until that memo is released. Last month the 2nd U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals ordered the government to release the document.

"A federal court has ordered the public release of a redacted legal memo authored by Barron and I believe that anything short of that is inadequate," Paul said in a statement released Tuesday. "I will continue to oppose this nomination until the document is released."

Barron's nomination has been approved by the Senate Judiciary Committee. It's not clear whether Paul will be able to stop Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.) from bringing Barron's nomination to a full Senate floor vote.

Our government really funny sometimes...

One minute they bring Anwar Al-Awlaki in to the Pentagon to give a speech on radical Islam after 9/11...

http://freedomoutpost.com/2012/08/fbi-terrorist-spoke-at-pen...

Then Obama gets in office, decides he wants to tie up loose ends, and murders American citizen Al Awlaki as well as his American 16 year old son...

On top of killing Qaddafi (who Bush called an ally in the war-on-terror), and Bin Laden (who was a CIA asset being hidden in U.S. funded Pakistan at their largest military base, NOT Afghanistan)...

Pretty clear the U.S. created it's own phantom enemies as the excuse to prosecute this 'war-on-terror', aka war-on-freedom and war-on-America...

Yeah, I read that article on Laurel Canyon earlier today

Amazing that Jim Morrison's dad led the Gulf of Tonkin "fake flag" (not false flag, there wasn't any attack, it was faked).

And many, many of those who "led" the counterculture, were initially traumatized by MK-ULTRA.

(I wonder if I was?)

I love you. I'm sorry. Please forgive me. Thank you.

While we are off-topic...

May I butt in while we have spun off-topic?

A friend sent me this link about Leonard Cohen's MK-Ultra experiences a few days ago. (I have no idea how reputable is the source.)

Judicial Nominee’s Memos on Drones Stirring Bipartisan Concern in the Senate

By JEREMY W. PETERS
MAY 5, 2014

WASHINGTON — President Obama’s choice for a powerful appeals court appointment is in peril from both the left and the right, highlighting how the fraught politics of an election year are threatening the president’s agenda even among his allies on Capitol Hill.

The nomination of David Barron, who was a Justice Department lawyer at the start of the administration and is now a Harvard Law School professor, is mired in a maw of contentious issues. Republicans object to what they say are his radically liberal views on the Constitution. Democrats in conservative-leaning states, especially those who are up for re-election, are wary that a vote for him might backfire with voters at home. And members of both parties say they are disturbed by Mr. Barron’s authorship of legal memos that justified the United States’ killing of an American citizen overseas with a drone.

The American Civil Liberties Union wrote to all 100 senators on Monday urging them to put off a vote on Mr. Barron’s confirmation until the White House allowed them to read all of his writings on the drone program.

A senior White House official said that it was trying to resolve any issues in the Senate so that Mr. Barron could be confirmed — a step that will delay the final vote — and that the administration would not push the nomination any further until it had come to a decision about how it could make some of Mr. Barron’s work available to the senators who wish to review it.

Regarding filibusters

If Rand filibusters, followed by another member's filibuster and another and another, why couldn't an endless stream of filibusters simply gum up the works for the next two years?

Im down, I would rather them

Im down, I would rather them waste time babbling on about stuff then passing more laws to screw us over...

We all share this eternally evolving present moment- The past and future only exist as inconsequential mental fabrications.

When speaking to our reps, I always mention...

I always mention that Congress has the authority to create Law.
However, there is no quota nor obligation.

I like the Texas State Legislature.
They convene twice each year.
Once to take care of lawmaking business.
The second time they all sit around wondering what they are doing there!

I guess that in Texas, they understand there is no obligation or quota to create Law.

I remember what Ross Perot said once when queried by a reporter about a specific piece of legislation.
He said, "Let me tell you this, every time Congress passes a new Law; they take away another of your rights"!

People complain about a "do nothing" Congress.
Perhaps we would all fair better if they actually did...nothing! Or at the least, less.
