The Hinge: Equity combined with Common Law

Interesting topic. One of the hinges seems to be the merger of Equity Law and Common Law in the 19th century. Why did this merger happen, and what was it that made people subject to Equity Law? I believe, it is the change of status of the peoples of the States from their nationality as Citizens of their respective States under Article 4, Section 2, to citizens of The United States under Amendment 14. This change and others in Amendment 14 allow the Federal Government Jurisdiction over the peoples of America where previously they had it not.
