If men were angles we would not need rulers.

But we might need protractors.

how obtuse?!?!?!

How Obtuse?!?!

At their inceptions, the #Liberty, #OccupyWallStreet and #TeaParty movements all had the same basic goal... What happened?

LOL

Seriously lol, math geeks will love this one, haha.

Well... the Strange Thing is..

..speaking in terms of astrology...

Most rulers are angular.

That is to say.. most rulers of nations, carry themselves by making angular conjunctions, and other synastry connections to a Nations chart. At least this is the formula used by the psychopaths in charge, who do understand and use astrology, to pick the puppets in charge who get elected.

so much for taking serious your humor ...haha.

"Take hold of the future or the future will take hold of you." -- Patrick Dixon

In terms of astrology my sin is πces.

Sorry I went off on a tangent.

Tho I seem to have struck a chord.

That's not your sin.

Your sin is poor spelling. In terms of astrology, one speaks of one's "sign." In terms of mathematics, one speaks of "sines." "Sin" doesn't make the cut in either.

When discussing astrology, I always tell people I was born under the sign of "Maternity Ward."

I must have been too obtuse

If I confused a known secant of knowledge like you:)

circular logic

kind of hard to escape that cycle...

...eh?

Don't get it... I guess I'm

Don't get it... I guess I'm just too dense...

Beware the cult of "government"...

It's a quote from Federalist Paper 51

"If men were angels, no government would be necessary. If angels were to govern men, neither external nor internal controls on government would be necessary. In framing a government which is to be administered by men over men, the great difficulty lies in this: you must first enable the government to control the governed; and in the next place oblige it to control itself. A dependence on the people is, no doubt, the primary control on the government; but experience has taught mankind the necessity of auxiliary precautions." - James Madison.

The OP purposely misspelled angels as angles, as in "90 degree right angles", something that a protractor would measure, but a ruler would be less useful with angles.

I liked it.

"Tu ne cede malis, sed contra audentior ito."

The reason you don't get it

is because it makes no sense.

Ok, so this...?

If men were straight lines, we would need rulers, but since we aren't we need leaders who lead by example, not necessarily force...
??

Nah, that doesn't hold up with the OP analogy...

OP feel free to chime in anytime.

Did you see this was in

the humor section? Just checking.

So it was meant to be utterly silly? i don't believe so...

How is it humorous, if one can't get the analogy, i.e.-the joke/punchline?

If men were angels...

Allow me to complete the statement opined above...

"if men were angels, we would need no rulers, and because men are not angels, we dare NOT have rulers"!

"Power corrupts; absolute power corrupts absolutely".

"The worst thing that can happen to a good cause is not to be attacked successfully, it is to be defended badly". F. Bastiat

"First they ignore you, then they laugh at you, finally they attack you, and then you win"! Mohandas Gandhi

"Knowledge is power" ... so does knowledge necessarily corrupt?

?

Also:

"With great power comes great responsibility." - Spidey

So, with great knowledge, comes great responsibility.

Can knowledge (being power) corrupt?

Can knowledge corrupt? AND HOW!
As a famous humorist once said, "It ain't not knowing that hurts people, it's knowing so darned much that just ain't so!

From the Environment to the Federal Reserve, from the First Amendment and "political correctness" to rights of trial by jury, "knowing so much that just ain't so" corrupts law, economy and society in countless ways. This corrupting kind of knowledge seems to be a specialty of media, academic, and government elites, doesn't it?

"The worst thing that can happen to a good cause is not to be attacked successfully, it is to be defended badly". F. Bastiat

"First they ignore you, then they laugh at you, finally they attack you, and then you win"! Mohandas Gandhi

"Knowing much that just ain't so"

The "ain't so" part is pretty key to that phrase.

The cure to "bad knowledge" or certain knowledge, is more knowledge.

The knowledge of understanding. The knowledge that with knowledge (power), comes responsibility.

No man should ever have absolute power. But to say NO one should have ANY power (knowledge), would leave us all in a lot of trouble.

It's the same issue with force and morality again... Force/Power/Knowledge should only be used for good. That's not so easy for mankind to handle, with temptations all around. So it's a test.

Absolutely

Absolutely

When we try to pick out anything by itself, we find it hitched to everything else in the Universe.
~ John Muir

absolutely...

...absolutely knowledge corrupts, or absolutely with knowledge comes responsibility?

PEOPLE OPPOSING TYRANNY - Real Grass Roots!
Are you a POT or a PET - Person Embracing Tyranny?

Absolute knowledge corrupts

But it's almost redundant. If an individual or organization has all the knowledge, that would lead to corruption in the same way and for the same reasons that absolute power corrupts. [Actually, people would just have to *believe* that a person or organization had absolute knowledge.) One example would be the Vatican.

When we try to pick out anything by itself, we find it hitched to everything else in the Universe.
~ John Muir

My moral compass

Is just going in circles on this one.

Men are NOT angles

and we still don't need rulers. Your witticism does not bear protracted examination from any angle, although I'm not above using it as a straight line.

Trying to make sense of the analogy...

1)
Ruler, i.e. - person who makes rules = ruler, i.e. - measuring stick

2)
Protractor, i.e. - measuring tool to measure angles = "protractor", i.e. - leaders who set example, but not necessarily enforce rules

3) if men were angles, i.e. - if men were Angels = if men were angles, i.e. ...? what?...?

Are you trying to say men are straight lines?
Or is the analogy not supposed to completely hold up, just make the point about needing leaders who lead by example and not rulers who rule by force?

Is it totally over my head so far?

Or are you actually advocating for a min-archy?

What's your angle?

Are men straight lines?
What is the analogy?

G-d reigns in Heaven, above the angels.

Lucifer, a fallen angel, tried to defy Him and was cast out of heaven.
Even the angels, like man, have free will and can choose to refuse G-d's moral laws.

That said, the only "ruler" mankind absolutely NEEDS is the Lord G-d Most High Himself.
Unless you want to settle for Lucifer's doctrine.
