I started a juice fast this Thursday

Progress updates, here

I've done fasts periodically for the past 20 years or so, and inspired by DavyC's fasting post from Saturday, I've decided to start a juice fast this Thursday. If anyone is interested in participating, you're welcome to join in. I'll document the process and the journey here, and answer any questions as best as I can.

I'll be drinking only fresh pressed vegetable juices, vegetable broth, and non-caffeinated tea, for at least three days. The third day is usually the worst, which in this case will fall on a Saturday, which is a good day to stay close to home and ride it out. Then you start feeling better and better - so light and free, like you never want to eat again.

I started a fat fast!

I eat every fat thing in sight. For breakfast I had six pieces of bacon and 4 eggs scrambled in the bacon grease so as to absorb as much fat as I could into the eggs. On top of the eggs I put two ounces of high fat cheese. Then on top of that I put two tablespoonsful of sour cream. I eat like this at every meal, I like to find the fatest meats I can.

Since I started eating like this I can't stand sweet treats any more, which was one of my weaknesses. Bread is also a food of the past for me, carbs below 20 daily.

I don't plan on living long and dying slowly, I plan on living long and just dropping dead, no agony involved.

I'm fasting

beginning today at 1:00 pm. Am embarking on a dry fast again, having prepared for 24 hours. I may transition this into a water fast but...here we go again!

Last day of fast bump.

You're in the home stretch now, Michael. The finish line is in sight.

Michael Nystrom's picture

Oh, far from the last day my friend Steve

I was planning on 21 days, but I have a dentist appointment and they're going to pull a tooth, so I think I'll cut it short at 10.

But thank you for thinking of me!

Damn, this sounds serious Michael.

Three days is one thing, but 21? If we ever meet, I want to be able to find you when you're standing sideways. lol. Be careful of too much of a good thing.

I watched that Reboot juicing

I watched that Reboot juicing documentary last night and am inspired. I just started today but Day One for me is not going to be only juice. I have a birthday party to attend tonight and knew it would be hard to start today. But I did go out and get what I needed. I don't think I can make it as long as those guys did but if I'm getting more fruits and veggies, that's a positive.

juicing smokes the crap that sells for juice at grocery store

I like the Dr Hyman diet.. no processed foods especially sugar and grain.. Lots of meat vegetables fruit and the weight comes off slowly without hunger.. Quitting wheat was super difficult -10 days of serious withdrawals.. The food industry is the biggest drug dealer. Research shows too much Sugar is bad but grains are even worse.

I'm not

getting this about how grains are bad. Got a link on that?

some interesting articles

http://www.drfuhrman.com/library/better_for_health.aspx?utm_...

Therapeutic fasting accelerates the healing process and allows the body to recover from serious disease in a dramatically short period of time. In my practice I have seen fasting eliminate lupus and arthritis, remove chronic skin conditions such as psoriasis and eczema, health the digestive tract in patients with ulcerative colitis and Crohn’s disease, and quickly eliminate cardiovascular diseases such as high blood pressure and angina. In these cases the recoveries were permanent: fasting enabled longtime disease suffers unchain themselves from their multiple toxic dugs and even eliminate the need for surgery, which was recommended to some of them as their only solution.

I just clicked on your first article

Wow! So many people have been inspired by Joe Cross. That is really incredible.

I think I will go for about 10 days, too. On day 12, I'm having a tooth pulled, so I think I should have some food in my system. I was planning on going for about 20, but that tooth operation has got me a little worried.

Great articles. Thanks Davy. Did you get your juicer yet? How do you like it?

what an inspiring film

what an inspiring film. and a darn good doc on it's on, since it's so unpretentious and joe is such a nice bloke. the juicer arrived yesterday. i'm off to whole foods today to do some shopping. 10 days sounds super to me. i'll probably do a three day for starters, and like you i have a tooth that needs extracted. it doesn't hurt so i've been putting it off, but i think it's time to face the music. all best on boosting your system!

question: do you make enough to have some in the fridge so when you get up you can have a glass right away?
i read somewhere where a guy makes a gallon at a time.

Michael Nystrom's picture

I've been putting off my tooth for a long while

Then it got infected a couple of weeks ago, and I had to do a course of antibiotics :( So it is really time for me to face the music. The appointment is already set.

Personally, I make the juice fresh every time I drink it. I know that in the movie Joe makes enough for the whole day, but then, he's traveling.

I have a few issues with Joe, though. One is that juicer - it is a centrifugal juicer, and I've heard you should drink that within 15 minutes of making it. Our kind will last longer, though. The second is his lack of doing, or at least showing in the movie, doing either enemas or salt water flushes. When you're juicing for that long, you still need to eliminate waste. Waste is being dumped into the bowels, but without any bulk in the diet, it can't make its way out on its own. So it needs some help.

This morning the first thing I did was get up and prepare a salt water flush, and am currently waiting for blast off! I hear the rumblings...

At any rate, I prefer the juice as fresh as possible, so I make it each session. The cleanup is so quick -- tell me if I'm lying: Under 2 minutes - that I don't mind.

I think with the Omega, you can get away with making a batch, but I don't think I'd let it sit for more than 12 hours.

Antibiotics not good for the gut.

Next time checkout what honeybee propolis can do for an infection any where in the body. i know first hand it's a hell of a pain killer for a toothache. Turns a throbbing ache to almost nothing within seconds.

Propolis is 50 times stronger than aspirin or tylenol and 3 times stronger than cocaine as a pain killer. The best thing it will kill any infection in the gums around the tooth within days.

God created the honeybees as a healer for man, in so many ways. But our modern world doesn't have time for bees any longer, mankind will pay a price for it's foolishness.

makes sense

thanks again.

Fasters Unite

I'm glad you two started these threads because I have been fasting every Monday and Tuesday for about 2 months now. I really had no rhyme or reason to the 2 days per week. I just decided to try it in hopes of a) cutting some weight b) proving to myself I could live without stuffing my face once in a while (I tend to be one of those bored, mindless eaters), and c) saving some fiat to enjoy on other things besides food.

It has been fairly successful so far. I have lost 25 pounds, feel more energized, and saved up some fiat. But now that I see so many others interested I will have to read up and maybe try some different methodologies.

Michael Nystrom's picture

Hey that is awesome

Sounds similar to what is described in The Fast Diet. Good work.

I think what you describe in b):

b) proving to myself I could live without stuffing my face once in a while (I tend to be one of those bored, mindless eaters), and

Is why there are so many overweight people in the country (including me): Lack of awareness and mindless eating. That is a very important thing to realize, and something that most people never do.

Kudos to you. Good work.

This is essentially what I do...

Each week I do two small fasts, 24 hours each. Simply an
attempt to reduce overall caloric intake. I am not a
"mindless eater", and I weigh in regularly, but as the
years roll on, losing weight has become too rediculously
difficult. 3 years ago, I did a 15 month stint drinking
2 protein smoothies a day... didn't lose a pound... really!?

So I figured I had to try the same tactic (elinate 2 meals)
but reduce the caloric intake even further (each smoothie
was about 350 calories).

It seems if I don't eat breakfast, I can roll through the
day all the way to dinnertime. It seems to work for me. Do
I get hungry? Yes at lunchtime, but that soon passes.

This juice-fasting thing is a new twist I'll have to look
into... though I am diabetic and juice may not be a great
thing for me to have as my only source of nurishment... but
I suppose the sugar content depends on the source of the
juice.

Wish you great success!

Fascinating. Thanks for the info.

Check out this movie for an introduction to fasting, through one man's journey:

Fat Sick & Nearly Dead

You can limit the ingredients to stay away from the sugar: Go heavy on the greens, limit the fruit and the carrots and you should be ok.

Best wishes!

Great!!! I love seeing people

Great!!!

I love seeing people decide to take the cleansing route. Dont be afraid if you get a rash or you pimples it's just acids trying to find a way to get out, its all cleansing. Also the longer you do the fast, the more careful you should be about what you eat when you are transitioning back into cooked foods. good luck! peace, love, and umphrey's

Thank You Michael!

Won't be able to start Thursday (date Friday night for sushi LOL) but I've been thinking seriously about doing this since last weekends posts too. Never done a juice fast before but I love to make fresh juice with my 15 year old Juiceman Jr (still going strong). My go to is carrot, ginger, tumeric and apple.

I'll be following your updates and maybe start Sunday or Monday :)

Juice Fast

That's great Mike. Good luck. I wish you well.

Thanks Renato

I'm hoping I can come by and use your little personal sauna on one of those days.

Looking forward to seeing you soon.

first timer here needs tips

How much is the average intake of juices per day; veggies / fruit?

What are some mixed good fruits/ veggies combination preferred by you guys/gals?

Me and my girlfriend are going to try this Monday through wednesday , wish us luck and best of luck to all on the dail paul.

Michael Nystrom's picture

3 - 5 glasses of juice per day

It is best if you have a guidebook. My favorite is this one, by Paavo Airola. It is the one that introduced me to the concept, so I'm biased.

As much as possible, stick to vegetable juices, with a little bit of fruit, preferably apple. What I have is:

- Carrot
- Celery
- Cucumber
- Kale
- Apple
- Lemon

That is a beautiful juice. Samantha and I drink that every morning. A masticating juicer is better than a centrifugal juicer.

Drink one for each meal that you would normally have. You might feel hungry - then feel free to have more. Drink plenty of water, too.

Good luck and thank you! Be safe and keep us posted.

Michael

JUICING VS MASTER CLEANSE

Hello from Geneva,
I live in Switzerland. Vegetables are very expensive here, but I wanted to try a vegetable juice fast. It is great, but unsustainable: I can tell you this is not only expensive, but enormously time consuming.
I have done the Master Cleanse before 15 days with wonderful results, but the downside is the social isolation.
I have visitors and I thought that, as soon as they leave on Friday and I am home alone, I am going to start the MC: cheap and easy, and you barely have to clean up.
A friend of mine is on his 22nd day and is doing great.
What I don't like is that you lose some muscle mass, but It is a good way to jumpstart the body and get back on track with a good diet.
Take care!

Michael Nystrom's picture

I've never done the master cleanse

But I'm open to trying it sometime in the future.

I don't think a juice fast is either unsustainable or expensive, considering the benefits. But to each his own.

Best of luck and take care.

I've used fresh juices in my diet

according to the Gerson method. I can personally attest that it does wonders for my health with quite a few degenerative conditions cured as a result. But it is extremely time/labor intensive. Gerson is only a few of the alternative treatments which have significant clinical data on its efficacy. Along with 60+ years of scientific data researching what works and what doesn't. Juicing is just one aspect; coffee enema is another.

Which came first, the mouth or the rectum?

"denatured, nutritionally empty, toxic modern diet"

As a start, people might at least discard anything in their cabinets and refrigerators that is processed, i.e., not natural food. From there, start eating fresh fruits and vegetables (lots) and meat that is hormone-, antibiotic-, and nitrate-free. Also nix the tap water, replaced with water that is free of fluouride and chlorine, that is, spring water - spring water that really comes from springs! (Brands can be checked on line.)

When we try to pick out anything by itself, we find it hitched to everything else in the Universe.

Good work

For a long juice fast, enemas are important. I was surprised that Joe Cross didn't talk about them in his movie.

Coffee enemas are really awesome.
