Made it ten days!

We had the movie saved on Netflix for a couple of years, and then finally watched it several weeks ago. Ended up going to Bed, Bath, and Beyond to get a Breville juicer like the one he used on the show. Playing around on the innerwebs we found out that they would give you a 20% off coupon for signing up at their website, so we did. The juicer was originally $149.99 so we got it for about $120.00. They had four different models but we went with the cheapest one, supposedly THE ONE that was used. It has done a wonderful job, so absolutely no complaints after spending about half of what I was planning to spend. Started to get the Omega but after seeing the small size hole for feeding veggies through, that went out the window.

So anyways..this is my tenth day and I have managed to lose 25 pounds so far. I did have the hunger pangs for a few days but they weren't too bad, and drinking water would make them go away. Didn't have one single headache and I never really felt "bad" at all. Luckily I've always eaten healthy farm raised foods, so the detox part wasn't that bad for me. My problem is bum knees from athletics, military life, and country boy life in general. Walking a mile equals swollen knees and the inability to walk for several days, so very little real heart pumping exercise. This led to big time weight gain. And pills.

I've been on two blood pressure medicines for several years now, and it still wasn't under control. After only the THIRD DAY I started to feel woozy and strange, so my wife took my blood pressure. 114/65 HOLY CRAP! So we kept taking it throughout the day and it never got much higher. The next day (on my own) I didn't take my blood pressure medicines and my BP averaged about 124/78. Looked up the half life of my meds and saw that it was about 24hours, so I didn't really figure it would last. This is now my 7th day without any blood pressure medicine and my blood pressure is absolutely perfect. I still can't believe it. The only medicine I am still taking is for my non functioning thyroid, and I'm about to look up a DP post about iodine and the thyroid to see if there's something we're missing.

Hoping to go the full 60 days, which will end on October 2nd I believe. Might stop a few days earlier because on October 4th we're taking our annual vacation to Indian Rocks Beach, Florida. Man will I be a cheap drunk!

My best advice..

I had problems with the "mean green" juice. I absolutely love veggies, but the bitter kale was killing me for the first two days. Also, the cucumber peeling was a little much for me. Anyway I had the thought...what about a kale shot? Looked it up on the innerwebs and in Japan there are juicing places everywhere, and their most popular shot seems to be kale. SO, instead of having kale, or whatever you don't like, ruining the whole 16 oz drink 4 times a day. Simply juice them and take them as a shot, with a chaser of water.

My juice fast update

Fat and Protein

Your body needs it....hopefully he's liquefying hemp and avocados as well.

Michael Nystrom's picture

He weighed over 300 pounds

Trust me, his body didn't need it.

Actually, it's more complicated than that.

He could have lost that same weight on a high fat, moderate protein, low carb, ketogenic diet.

This fellow lost 280 pounds doing a low carb/ketogenic diet.

While a juice fast may feel incredible for some length of time, many people start to feel bad from it if they go too long. This makes sense as the ability to juice fruits and veggies is a relatively recent phenomenon in the whole history of man. So it is not natural for us to juice fast forever. And juicing concentrates the carbs along with the nutrients, making it potentially problematic for those of us, like myself, who are carb sensitive. Many long time vegans report that they started off feeling great, but in time started feeling crappy.

It does seem that one can lose weight doing a high carb, low or no fat diet, or by doing a high fat or protein, low carb diet. But it doesn't tend to go well doing both at the same time. You'll notice that most foods in the standard American diet (SAD) are a lethal combination of high carb, high fat and high salt. Those all together, create foods that many of us can't stop eating once we start.

Vegan diets tend to be high carb, and Paleo etc. are low carb high protein or fat. As I said, people can lose weight doing either, but personally I think the vegan folks tend to lose muscle and not look healthy,

The couple in this vid is vegan. They claim they are healthy and feel great. I don't know, but they look unhealthy to me and seem kind of spacy.

Now this link shows an interesting transformation. The photo on the left is the before photo, the middle is after she'd been doing P90X workout. The one on the right is after she incorporated the Paleo diet along with her workout routine.

Also, many health professionals say that the patients they encounter with the worst brain health tend to be low fat/no fat vegans. In his book 'Stop Alzheimer's Now!' Dr. Bruce Fife says that the best diet for brain health is a low carb, moderate to high fat and protein diet. And recommends plenty of healthy fats, with coconut oil being very excellent for brain health. He has had patients gain back mental abilities, that they had previously lost, by consuming several tablespoons of coconut oil per day.

So it would seem that in the short term he didn't need fat and protein, but in the long term he would be doing well with some.

Yes, basically sounds like

Yes, basically sounds like the Atkins diet repackaged differently. I did the Atkins diet years ago and it worked quite well. Was losing .70 pounds per day on average.

The girl with the before & after photos... the middle photo stated P90X was the workout routine. For the third photo it was Crossfit + Paleo.

Is it your belief that eating fat makes you fat?

There are number of large people who are eating diets very high in saturated fat, maybe 70% of their Calories, moderate in protein, maybe 25%, and low in carbohydrates, maybe 5%, and easily losing weight on a modestly reduced total Caloric intake. The markers of their health almost always improve dramatically. Some combine this with intermittent fasting of a day or two at at time, but nothing long term like promoted in this video.

You might want to check out what some of these people are saying about their personal experiences:

Or do a google search for ketogenic diet and see what the current research is showing.

My own conclusion from looking as carefully as my old brain allows, is that the current high carbohydrate low fat food pyramid and "heart healthy" polyunsaturated fats paradigm are just as bogus (and dangerous) as is Al Gore's man made global warming scam, and as is the "US is the land of the free" mantra.

Without adequate fat and protein people develop serious diseases and die. Without carbohydrates our bodies use fat that we eat or have stored to burn as fuel by converting it to ketone bodies, and for the small requirements we have for sugar, we simply convert in our liver some of the protein we eat (or from our muscles if we don't eat protein) to sugar.

"Bend over and grab your ankles" should be etched in stone at the entrance to every government building and every government office.

Years ago before I went on

Years ago before I went on the Atkins diet I asked my doctor about it. His exact words to me were that their practice had plenty of patients who they had been suggesting they lose weight for the longest time, but they never did. Then all of a sudden during a short period of time many of those patients not only were losing weight but their health markers were also significantly improving as well (specifically cholesterol & blood pressure). Turned out that they all started doing the Atkins diet, which was the fad diet during that time. So his recommendation was that even though that type of eating was not normally suggested, the results speak for themselves.

Thanks, I needed that!

I had seen this well made and inspiring documentary several years ago; thought I'd watch a few minutes but went the distance. I've been taking fruit/veggie smoothies for three years now every day, and while I won't be switching to juicing I think I'll incorporate some juicing into my diet now.
This film inspires me to diversify my smoothie ingredients which I will do starting today. I'm thinking as of this moment I will go seven days with nothing but smoothies, juice and exercise and should be fit as a beach bum by next week and ready for a swim at Waywayanda Lake.

Thanks for the wake up and reboot.

Best diet EVER!

I have tried this.Could only stick with it for 2 wks.But in that 2 wks,I lost 27lbs & felt better than I felt in my entire life!Any doubters need to stop hating n start juicin. If you're gonna critique it,atleast try it!

Any help for those of us who CAN'T gain weight?

Skinny people eat all good and bad stuff and we're still skinny. I have had four babies and eat all the bad and good stuff in great multitudes and cannot gain weight. Go figure.

Look into the Paleo/Primal diet

People who are overweight lose fat and gain muscle. People who are scrawny put on muscle. It seems to put ones body in a state of homeostasis. I've seen one where an anorexic gal got herself stabilized. Here is a link to her story -

And check this guy out -

Thanks for the info, Pete!

There is an article there called "How to Gain Weight and Build Muscle" - it's a great site and I will head over there regularly to learn - thanks again!

I am one of these people also

except no babies as it is bit difficult to get pregnant as a male person.

I can eat anything and I neither gain weight, but still I love juicing because it is not only for losing weight, but getting all the micro nutrients that are so healthy and also these juices are so Tasty compare to all the crap that one can buy from Shops plus the colors are amazing.

Juicing is the Art of Cocktail making without the alcohol. And the best Cocktails come from juicing plus alcohol.

Do you think you are underwieght,

or otherwise unhealthy? I haven't watched the video above (some sort of juicing diet?), but I got fantastic overall health benefits from the paleo/primal diet. I recommend checking it out:

That is not my wheelhouse. I have a hard time even wrapping my head around it.

I have a burger and a couple of beers and I gain 5 lbs overnight. I wish I had an answer for you (and I wish I had your problem!)

Back in the day

I went from 128#-161# lifting weights 3-4 times a week and drinking protein shakes twice a day. If you can't gain fat, gain muscle. My waistline only increased 1/2 ". Easy protein drink- Welches Grape Juice, Banana, Raw Egg and Protein powder. Used to pop desiccated liver and B12 prior to workout.

Ron Paul Was Right

I would think Welches Grape Juice has

high fructose syrup in it. Most store-bought juices are loaded with fructose sweeteners and "natural" flavors - I tried them all. I gave up on my old staple orange juice two years ago for the same reason. If I want orange juice I buy a bag of oranges. The only juice I buy these days is Tomato Juice Cocktail from time to time.

Grapes I use every day in my smoothies, one of my favorite fruits. I buy ten pounds at a time, destem them, roll them in ice cold water to clean off pesticides, paper dry and plastic bag them and place in the freezer. They keep for a couple months, great all summer long (little slushies) and cool in a blender without ice cubes.
Just my thoughts, ciao.

The Welches purple grape juice with the yellow lid

In the frozen section does not have HFC. And it's delicious!

Make wine

While your at it. :)

Love that movie. prompted me

Love that movie. prompted me to go on another juice diet after I saw it a few years back... I guess I may be time again.

If you disagree with me on anything you are not a real libertarian...

Good post Michael

My wife and I had watched this a few years back and forgot about it. We launched a juice campaign after watching.
Good stuff

This is a good one.

I am not a fan of juicing, however. I like Tom Naughton's "Fat Head" and "Big Fat Fiasco" better.

What do you mean

that you are not fan of juicing? Do you mean that you don't like juices or you don't like to have a juice diet or juice fast?

Juicing can also mean that you can eat as many hamburgers in "Fat Head" style, but in addition to all these burgers you also drink around a litre of fresh juice a day. Then you don't give up anything you like, but you just ad juicing. This is what juicing means, for example, for me now even if I will try a true juice fast one day.

This is one of Joe Cross' suggestions: you don't have to change anything, but just ad juicing. How about that?
