'Slowhand' is ready to slow down after expressing concerns for his health, the stresses of travel - and the fact he could become 'an embarrassment'

Eric Clapton has revealed he is preparing to retire after more than 50 years on the road.

The rocker, 69, said his health is a factor, travelling has become “unbearable”, and he worries he will become an embarrassment if he carries on for too long.

He added that touring has become much less enjoyable because most countries have turned into a “different version of America”.

Eric said: “There are tons of things I’d like to do – but I’m looking at retirement, too. I’m 70 next year.

“I think what I’ll allow myself to do, within reason, is carry on recording in the studio... I don’t want to go off the boil to the point where I’m embarrassing myself.”

Eric, who rocketed to fame as teenager in the 60s with The Yardbirds, was so brilliant he was nicknamed God by fans. But the man who is also known as Slowhand is slowing down now his body is creaking.
