B00M!

See if you can guess or figure out what the heck this is.

A gigantic hole has opened up in Siberia unearthing a gigantic cavern below. A lot of people are speculating what caused it, i.e. meterorite, sink hole, gas explosion, ? . A scientific team is investigating now.

Anybody else notice how

Anybody else notice how different the comment section on the DP is from the one on Infowars? Night and day.

It's a vile hate fest over there.

I didn't pay attention to this article, but read one on Yahoo..

somewhere in there it was blamed on the ultra scary "GLOBAL WARMING" monster. I can't believe ManBearPig likes to hang out in Siberia.

Wouldn't dismiss the significance

of methane - it doesn't stay in the atmosphere as long as CO2,
but it's much more potent (as in 20-30 times stronger effect) as
a greenhouse gas, and the concentration in the Northern Hemisphere
atmosphere is higher than it's been in at least 400,000 years.

The permafrost contains huge amounts of methane locked
in frozen water, but the permafrost is underlaid with unfrozen
water bearing layers called talik that are kept unfrozen by the heat
of the earth.

It's thought that when melting happens on the bottom of the frozen
layer you can end up with big methane bubbles trapped by an overlayer
of permafrost or in the case of clathrates on continental shelves, big
bubbles under layers of sediment.

In Siberia they have been seeing more and more cases of talik coming all
the way to the surface (as the permafrost layer melts) and detected methane
releases from these. But as you can see below, they have been warning of the
danger of sudden large scale releases since at least 2008 and that is *maybe*
what happened here. Guess you might want to be careful where you lit up a
camp stove up that way...

"Shakhova et al. (2008) estimate that not less than 1,400 Gt of Carbon is presently locked up as methane and methane hydrates under the Arctic submarine permafrost, and 5-10% of that area is subject to puncturing by open taliks. They conclude that "release of up to 50 Gt of predicted amount of hydrate storage [is] highly possible for abrupt release at any time". That would increase the methane content of the planet's atmosphere by a factor of twelve."

BTW - 1 Gt = one BILLION tons

Who's talking about methane?

I'm talking about Al Gore's ManBearPig aka Global Warming that humans can somehow magically control through more taxes and World Government control.

I think the "I didn't pay attention" part

of your first post should have been a tipoff.

So, even living in tornado country you think it's useless to
know what tornadoes can do? What conditions cause them?
When one is coming? Just because you don't necessarily
have the means to stop or control them?

Methane clathrates - punctured talik

There are mega amounts of methane locked up in permafrost
and under a lot of continental shelves - it's thought that it sometimes
gets released in catastrophic events - causing undersea landslides,
tsunami and such.

The methane itself isn't frozen but it's encased in lattice-like structures
of frozen water. Russian scientists have been warning for years about this
because methane is hugely more potent greenhouse gas than CO2...

Methane release is considered a likely cause of the Storegga
Slides where a 180 mile long section of the Norwegian continental
shelf collapsed around 6000 years ago:

Tesla Remnant

Thomas Pynchon's book Against the Day, puts forth several possible explanations for the Tunguska event, which affects several of his main characters. Among these possibilities are a meteorite, alien visitation, temporal disturbance and a misdirected energy beam from Nikola Tesla.

Not my favorite Pynchon

- that would be Gravity's Rainbow - but I think I have Against the Day
kicking around somewhere - maybe I should give it another read.

Be interesting to see what happens if those guys who want to build a
working model of Tesla's Wardenclyffe tower get it up and going:

Don't some of the protagonists of AtD end up in SW Oregon, though? Fishing
on the Umpqua River? You could have unhappier endings than that...

If you ever happen across it, there's a collection of Pynchon's early writing
called "Slow Learner" that's pretty worthwhile:

Looks like some type of impact...

that happened to occur over a cavern. An impact explains the crater-type shape with mounded, newly unearthed material surrounding it.

Whatever it was, the object should be much more intact than what it would have been had it struck solid ground. It could still likely be nearly obliterated, however.

It will be interesting to see ground level photography in addition to measuring the radius of the debris field.

The resolution of the video and image extracted are rather poor.

I waz thinkin the same.....

The weird thing is, what are the chances that it strikes right on a cavern? It'd be interesting to see the last few years of the nearest earthquake readings. Maybe there's a meteor down thar?
