US / Mexico Border Near Campo, California

My wife and I toured the US / Mexico border around 2006 while we lived in California. Given our current illegal immigration crisis, I thought I'd share these photos with you. What you see here is our actual border. Forget about the TSA and their little blue gloves and politely queued checkpoint lines you've experienced while travelling. That's just the fake security our government puts on for show.

Browse the photos below, you'll get a taste of the real deal.

Minuteman post with spotting scope at Patriot Point, adjacent to the border and the highest ground for several miles. USA territory is on the left.

Campo, California. 55 miles east of San Diego, and where the border fence ends.

The steel border fence is typically repaired by American volunteers, since the Border Patrol has no funds for upkeep. Still, numerous entry points are visible even in this small section.

A solitary American flag affixed by the Minutemen to the fence, with Mexico stretching to the horizon beyond.

Illegal border crossers tie cloth to their feet to obfuscate their tracks as they make entry into our country.

In some places, the border fence is only waist high.

In some places, the border fence is not even a fence, just a horizontally mounted pole.

Here is one section where the border fence ends.

The fence abruptly ends, marking the spot where money and political will could no longer justify construction.

A solitary border patrol vehicle, with an overwhelmingly large area to monitor.

Here the border fence is split where a large boulder interfered with sound construction.

Another gap in the fence.

Mexico stretches to the horizon beyond the fence gap. The whole area on the Mexico side is completely controlled by drug lords, who have total control over all drug and human smuggling.

Needles are scattered all over. Smugglers inject speed or meth so they can run for miles and quickly get beyond the immediate border area.

Yet another place where the border fence just ends...

And then picks up again....

Driving along the dirt road along the border, countless gaps exist in the fence and have been exploited countless times.

Yet another location where the fence just ends.

Here's a location where Mexican nationals were actually just driving their cars right through, so Minutemen and local ranchers erected some steel poles as makeshift barriers.

Patriot Point, in Campo, California. Our flag flies proudly on this high ground where Minutemen assist our border patrol in spotting illegal border crossers.

While these photos represent only a tiny fraction of our border, I hope it helps you to understand the scope of the issue we face.

After reading the comments on this thread, I thought some clarifications would be in order.
1) Dr. Paul does not support a border fence. Symbolically, I agree a border fence does not represent the idealism which best describes America. Or, at least America as I think of her.
2) Border fences do work if the measure of success is to reduce unwanted crossings. Objectively, it is well documented that illegal San Diego border crossings were reduced well over 90% when the fence was erected.
3) Border fences do not work if the measure of success is 100% impenetrability. Objectively, it is well documented that border fences all over the world have been breached by creative, motivated individuals.
4) A border fence can have a dual role. For example, we have military bases all over the country which have fences. A military base relocated to the border could have miles and miles of fences which safeguard both our military base as well as our country, and I think would be acceptable to a vast majority of Americans.
5) TSA strip searching grandmothers and children before air flights in the name of "safety" is patently absurd, given the obvious penetrability of our southern border.

I agree there is no easy solution to our border crisis. Personally, I have deep respect for The Good Doctor and tend to side with his opinions even if they are contrary to my own. He has proven to be the wisest person to pass through Washington in a long time and has earned my respect a thousand times over.

Down below was mentioned 'proof of citizenship for job'... and..

...that is freedom... how?

Proof of citizenship is shifting the blame and burden, caused by oath-breakers, onto the God given free-market freedom to own and work!

Time to call the spade, a spade!

In the briefest of nutshells:

1) End the counterfeiting which steals wealth from the true owner, and criminally enriches the corporate fascists, politically connected, the crony capitalists! Further it enlarges government unconstitutionally, providing nation destroying incentives for the slime, the lazy, the criminals to come here and vote for their cut of the wealth!

2) Along with ending the corrupt practices of welfare, shrinking government, cleaning out Washington, simply spend the last 50 million both parties secretly want to use for a resort for illegal aliens, instead, putting all the old buses, filled with every illegal, on a one way trip south! Additionally ending all unconstitutional programs will likely form the largest incentive for the more understanding of the illegal's, to return south. Execute the murderers and rapists who, just in the state of Texas, now number over 150,000, have killed 3,000 innocents, and raped over 7,000 girls! Further, I have no doubt any one of constitutional militia, National Guard of a State, or the Marines returning home from all over the world, would have no trouble rectifying the issue of safety and bully cartels who haunt the border... cutting off all trade with Mexico, including the billions we give them, will produce immediate incentive for government change and cleansing south of the border!

3) Immediately go back to the days of over 40 years ago, issue sound coinage of gold and silver, then allow any alien who wants to compete for work, to be registered as such. They can work to their heart's content, keep their money, send it home, or whatever they wish. If they do not want to work anymore, go home, or seek charity privately!

4) It's really simple if you go back to the constitution, enforce it upon those for whom it was written to be sworn to obedience, punish those who are oath-breakers. Like the good doctor says, keep it simple. Return to the constitution and you will find the most direct solution, the simplest, the fairest, the most just!

5) If there is an interim shortage of funds, for the government to survive in it's constitutional duties, including rounding up illegal aliens, there will be found an abundance of ill-gotten gain accumulated by the criminals who have fed at the FED trough for these last 100 years... any old computer can run that algorithm!

Remember, on the one hand, money does not grow on trees... but on the other, neither does it disappear! It is always in someone's pocket, justly or unjustly! The proceeds of the unconstitutional, immoral, criminal counterfeiting body called the FED, fall smack into that category and it is not rocket science to follow the trail of ill-gotten gain left by all who have acquired wealth not given them as the fruit of their labor by God Almighty, and return it to value of the dollar the people are forced to use!

Having PROOF of being an American for work was my comment

There are legal ways to become a citizen here in America. Why shouldn't Americans be the ones to get jobs here in America? I do believe it is freedom in our country just like citizens of other countries have the FREEDOM to work in their own country.

I am sure a work visa or other legal method could be obtained BUT the purpose of my comments below was to bring to light that a FENCE will not stop the border jumping without the removal of all the damn aide they are getting.

If our tax dollars are going to go to anyone, why would they not go to actual Americans? I am not FOR taxes but just saying, in the current playing field they should at least come back to US who actually pay into this beast.

It really shows just how much

It really shows just how much the establishment class wants the Illegal Aliens here. Kudos to the Minutemen, stand strong, Patriots.

Here is one of our engagement photos at big bend natl park... we were on a small pebble island between Mexico and US. It is very easy to cross here... and we did for a few photos. All we had to do was walk through 30 or so ft of 4 in deep water.

I looks absolutely beautiful

It looks absolutely beautiful there. Congratulations. Sometimes people get so caught up in hot button issues like keeping illegals out, that we forget the flip side... That it should be made simpler and freer to access natural beauty such as this anywhere, not more difficult.

It is a treat for the eye out there for sure... After visiting we couldn't stop talking about moving out to the Teralingua area. Low cost of living, less regulation, and everyone loves art and liberty!

Great post. Excellent Post.

Reality is such a powerful communication medium. So much better than flim-flam.

Anyhow, I'm glad you don't feel that a big Gestapo-fence is the solution; it's clear to me that all we need to do is remove the incentives the feds hang out for non-citizens. That's really all we can do and still respect everyone's rights.

Proof of citizenship for a job empowers a gov't agency to say who has a right to earn a living. What could go wrong with that? :)

So long as there isn't implicit advantage in being here illegally, that's moral and fair. Making most things somewhat more difficult for illegals is really all we need to do to limit the issue.

There will always be illegal aliens here, and our handling of the issue will determine how many. I don't want to live in a country where there are zero (imagine what tyranny that would require), and I don't want to live in a country where most people are here illegally while getting access to my paycheck courtesy of government enablers.

Increasing the liberty of citizens while reducing the benefits (provided by force) to illegal aliens will simultaneously reduce the incentive to hire illegals and reduce the incentive to be an illegal alien.

Once again, freedom and liberty are the answer.

Did I just see them post on the sign the hours they will be out?

i'm pretty sure illegals can deduce when to cross the border if that is true.

A true flower can not blossom without sunlight and a true man can not live without love.

Author note....

That sign is a mile or two from the border road and fence. Sorry for giving the impression it is right on the border. But certainly, the drug lords who control all border crossing activities in this sector are very well acquainted with Border Patrol schedules.

Proclaim LIBERTY throughout all the land unto all the inhabitants thereof

Speaking of...

...a mile or two away from the border, do you have any pix of the dozens of parked BP patrol cars in the BP station lot? If so, post them. While we were volunteering on the border to stem the flow, the BP station was overflowing with parked patrol cars.

What was it? Not enough funds? Not enough BP officers? It sure wasn't because those patrol units weren't needed.

oh okay well either way the other pictures were telling enough

what a disgrace to the law of the land.

when depressions hit we have to hold tight to our fundamental rights to protect ourselves from the government... but now on top of that we are being weighed down by lawless economic warfare

From what I see

is the powers that be "want" a breech to cause civil unrest and bring down the current system by overwhelming it.
The NWO want to dissolve that border. Flood the Country with more mouths to feed, shelter and pay for to crash the system and bring about destruction of the Country through martial law and violence.

The people that want to do this most of them don't live here. They live in some wealthy low key Country and pull the strings of the traitors that live here.

what about the purported sensors in the ground?

I got stopped coming out of that area a few years back. The border patrol officer was partially blocking the "road" so I drove past him about 50 feet or so and got out to put air in my tires again. He drove up and started yelling at me asking me why I didn't stop so he could exercise his Autoritae...what a dick.

I told him I was stopped now so what did he want. I think his only aim was to be a jerk so after giving me a long speech about all the smugglers in the area he drove off peeling out as he went. Then they wonder why they have no street cred. Seems like every time I would drive up to Valley of the Moon there would be some renegade border hunter waiting to stop me when I would come back. Pretty lame...

Great post. Wow! Meanwhile we seem to have the money to...

...give billions away in foreign aid and have our military protect the borders of countless foreign countries.

I honestly think the government WANTS illegals in here.

AND...WHY THE HELL don't the border states themselves patrol their own borders? Afterall - they are the ones getting hit the hardest.

Open borders don't bother

Open borders don't bother me.

Ending the handouts...

...will never happen. The democrats won't do it because they're socialists & the republicans won't do it because of the "optics" of it (racists, don't care about the poor, rich-white-guy club...take your pick) OR because of religious beliefs (like Beck insisting we have to care for these illegals). Again, especially with 43% of people on some kind of government handout, ending the handouts will never happen. In a perfect world, sure...but not in this world.

It will be cheaper and more effective to build & secure a border fence.

A quick chat with Tim Donnelly at his election(concession) speech. I know he is one of the founders of the California Minutemen and I am proud and honored to have the chance to speak with him.

I know he is fighting as hard as he can to stem the flow here in CA.

I could care less whether we have a border fence or not

A fence can be jumped, dug under, cut and even rammed to knock it down. Having manned guard stations every XXX hundred of feet is not feasible even if it was manned 24/7 by volunteers.

If the FREE AIDE wasn't here no one would want to illegally cross the border. If you NEEDED to be an American citizen to work here no one would illegally cross the border. I also don't think that a child should be an American citizen just because they were born here IF their parents weren't citizens first.

Cut the aide and we wouldn't need a fence. As if the current fence setup is actually doing any real good in the first place. Why would we want America fenced in? That is idiotic at best.

Even if we had a complete border fence with armed guard stations setup exactly as needed, they would still bus people in so what is the point here?

If, Hell- Operation Wetback returned a million illegals 1st year

Elimination of benefits by forcible redistribution by the government in your lifetime can only be constructed in the mind.

If? A fence is buildable and defensible.

Operation Wetback (1954): Implementation and tactics --Wikipedia

Operation Wetback was a system of tactical control and cooperation within the U.S. Border Patrol and alongside the Mexican government.[30] Planning between the INS led by Gen. Joseph Swing and the Mexican government began in early 1954 while the program was formally announced in May 1954.[31] On May 17th, 1954 command teams of 12 Border Patrol agents, buses, planes, and temporary processing stations began locating, processing, and deporting Mexicans that had illegally entered the United States. 750 immigration and border patrol officers and investigators, 300 jeeps, cars and buses, and 7 airplanes were allocated for the operation.[32] Teams were focused on quick processing and deportation, as planes were able to coordinate ground efforts more quickly and increase mobility. [33] Those deported were handed off to Mexican officials, who in turn deported them into central Mexico where there were many labor opportunities.[34] While the operation would include the cities of Los Angeles, San Francisco, and Chicago, its main targets were border areas in Texas and California. [35] Overall, there were 1,078,168 apprehensions made in the first year of Operation Wetback, with 170,000 being captured from May to July 1954.[36] The total number of apprehensions would fall to just 242,608 in 1955, and would continuously decline by year until 1962, when there was a slight rise in apprehended workers.[37] During the entirety of the Operation, border recruitment of undocumented workers by American growers continued due largely to the inexpensiveness of undocumented labor and the desire of growers to avoid the bureaucratic obstacles of the Bracero program; the continuation of illegal immigration despite the efforts of Operation Wetback was largely responsible for the failure of the program.[38] Despite the decline in apprehensions, the total number of Border Patrol agents more than doubled to 1,692 by 1962, and an additional plane was also added to the force.[39] In terms of apprehensions, Operation Wetback was immediately successful. However, this success would be short lived, as the program would fail to limit the number of workers entering the United States from Mexico illegally.[40] The program would also result in a more permanent, strategic border control presence along the United States - Mexico border.[41]

Overall, completely agree...

my only small disagreement is that IF there were no free aid and no automatic citizenship, there would still be people who want to come.

But these people would be ambitious, driven, and hard working people who would be motivated to create a better life for themselves and their families.

I say, the more people like that the merrier!

Poor and motivated people who sought out opportunity to be productive BUILT this country.

And that form of immigration

Is what made this place so great!

I totally agree.

you can't serious

You guys are complaining about this wall? This wall is a joke than anyone can easily jump. In Texas, there is no wall at all. At the Big Bend National Park, the Rio Grande is like 5 feet wide. You can just jump across. Even if a wall were to be put up all along the border, it would be useless unless there are manned guard towers within sight of each other. I have no idea how much that would cost, but I sure don't want to pay for that.

And then it would start to look ominously like the Iron Curtain. Have you guys ever seen the Iron Curtain? There aren't many pictures on the Internet and they don't do it justice. Imagine an 8 foot electrified fence with razor wire on top, then a mine field, and then another fence of loops of pure razor wire. Climbing the fence with gloves on would change the resistance of the current and set of alarms. All this with guard towers that housed guys with machine guns.

And people still got across. I know many stories I could share. Stories which shine with human ingenuity and the unquenchable thirst for freedom. The Iron Curtain is one of the biggest symbols of human oppression I can think of, and you would like to erect something like that on our border? How anti-libertarian can you get? Remember what Ron Paul said. You put up a wall like that, and, someday, that wall will be used to keep people in.
