Armored vehicle protected soldiers, now Racine County

RACINE — After protecting U.S. troops in Kuwait, a hefty bit of military hardware has come to Racine County — through a sort of federal government über-recycling — to safeguard residents here.

After the action this 30,865-pound, 20-person armored personnel carrier vehicle might have seen in the Persian Gulf, it’s not like it will regularly drive over land mines or be hit with improvised explosive devices back here. Its off-roading capability will definitely be used in Racine County, but it won’t be the same as trundling through rugged desert terrain.

The price tag? About $3,900, Sheriff Chris Schmaling said Wednesday.

By tapping into a military surplus program available to law enforcement and other governmental agencies, the Racine County Sheriff’s SWAT team acquired the used armored vehicle to replace the more than decade-old, former Brinks armored truck that was used in high-risk police situations.

** The news is from 2012, but it's the first time I've seen reports of V-Hulled MRAPs rolling around. Not sure if any of y'all seen these V-hulled ones in your area, but it's the first I heard it.

While many MRAPs are designed with V-hulls, to varying degrees, many if not most of the initial batches of MRAPs didn't have these extreme V-Hull angles that blow blasts away from the floor of the vehicle.

So, at least from what I've observed, is that the MRAPs most sheriff's depts have been de facto free-loading off of Pentagram, have been the older earlier generation non-V-Hulled designs (well, ones with less extreme-angles, to be more specific).

Plus, the one in the above video seems to have a rear-wheel steering system; as far as I know, these look like, either a re-vamped, or probably re-designed/evolved out of an old South African Apartheid-era "force protection" team's vehicle design called Casspir:

Anyone here know which exact model, is featured in the above We Are Change video??

Yup...does seem like a Casspir unit. Well, the corporatist war-toy aspect aside, for all my fellow greasemonkeys & gunnies here:

UPDATE 1: Some vids on Casspir; would be lying if I said, I wouldn't want one! lol: hey, it'd make a pretty good alternative to an Unamog, as a platform to build an expedition RV on

The Casspir is an unusual vehicle, being in service in much the same form not only with several South African Police forces but also with the South African National Defense Forces. It was originally developed for the rigorous conditions of Namibia, where a very high mine threat was prevalent. More information on Military-Today.com website.

The MECHEM Vehicle Mounted Mine Detection System is a metal detection system integrated with a suitable mine protected vehicle platform. Metal detection systems from various manufacturers are used. The MVMMDS uses an electronic pulse induction metal detection system and the sensors are mounted on a non-metallic rubber draw-mat that is drawn behind a modified CASSPIR or TAPIR Mine Protected Vehicle. The draw-mat can be towed directly behind the vehicle or to the left or right of the vehicle.
