freediving is awesome

When I took the class, my instructor told us we would be able to hold our breath for three minutes at the end of the class. I thought he was greatly exaggerating, but he turned out to be right. When cold water hits your face, the mammalian dive reflex kicks in and your heart rate slows down. Why do we have a dive reflex? Humans evolved on the dry savannahs of Africa. It's an interesting question.
