Fukushima Safe Fish?Submitted by ss119 on Thu, 07/31/2014 - 19:24
I like to cook, and everyone knows fish is a great health food. But post-Fukushima, I now wonder just how contaminated the Pacific Ocean-based food supply has become. So I tried to logically determine which would be the most Fukushima-safe fish that I can actually buy at my local grocery store. I share my analysis here with you....
I decided that the "healthiest" fish (in moderate quantities) would be the one which:
1) is high in Omega-3 fatty acids (i.e., is a fatty fish), and
2) is isolated from the Pacific Ocean, and away from industrial pollution sources in general
This is especially tricky because fish accumulate toxins in their fat. Looking at all the options at my local high-end-ish grocery stores, I decided the winner is... Arctic Char!
My reasoning is as follows. Since this is the highest-latitude, coldest water fish available at my fish market, it is likely also the fattiest one, as fat keeps fish warm. (It is a general rule that cold water fish are fattier, while warm, tropical water fish tend to be leaner.) Thus, being from arctic waters means it has more of the good fat.
Second, since Arctic char is a fresh water fish, it is more isolated from the global ocean systems. Living in freezing-cold, high-latitude arctic rivers and streams helps, in general. Their eggs incubate under the ice for 6 months!
3rd, the stuff I get is farm-raised, which I think is a good thing in this case. Salmon farming is notoriously sloppy in North America. But Arctic char farmers from Canada tend to be the environmentally-conscious, sustainable-fishing types. Check out these guys, for example: http://www.icywaters.com/
So, basically, I recommend Eskimo fish. Fatty, cold water, freshwater. Sustainable farming practices.
Arctic char taste and texture is halfway between salmon and trout. It is my favorite fish now, and my fishmonger says it is gotten super popular. Maybe others are thinking as I am? I'm paying $11 per pound, cheaper than the salmon, sea bass, and mahi mahi they have. So there.
What do yall say? Any other safe fish recommendations? Should I not worry about the cesium and just do more sit-ups?

And here is a fancy fish sandwich with Mexican mole sauce I made. Delicious, ciabatta believe it!
