The ban of drinking water in northwest Ohio was lifted early today, after tests of Toledo water showed safe levels of the toxin microcystin.

Toledo Mayor D. Michael Collins announced at a 9:30 a.m. news conference
-----------------
Algal bloom leaves 500,000 without drinking water in northeast Ohio

Officials in Toledo, Ohio, warned residents of the city and surrounding areas on Saturday not to drink their tap water or try to boil it for purification after samples found dangerously high levels of toxins from an algal bloom.

Potentially dangerous algal blooms, which are rapid increases in algae levels, are caused by high amounts of nitrogen and phosphorous. Those nutrients can come from runoff of excessively fertilized fields and lawns or from malfunctioning septic systems or livestock pens.

City officials warned that boiling the tap water will not destroy the toxic microcystins... could affect the liver and cause diarrhea, vomiting, nausea, numbness or dizziness.

They could not say when they expect Toledo's water service to be declared safe.

If you let algae get 'away' from you... it can be a REAL nightmare.

i don't think in this case...

this algae produces a toxin which can't even be boiled out...

I use Blue Wave, but don't expect one of THEIR silly taglines.

Drinkable water is definitely the last thing you can afford being incapable to access at any price...

Screw that, my cart would be full of beer.

I'd be more worried about taking a shower.

Good to have a pool full of chlorine.

Imagine taking a hot shower full of God knows what.

Shower filters are sold at Home Depot for less than $20.
