Saturday Night Movie on DP: "The Chosen"Submitted by Nonna on Sat, 08/02/2014 - 19:10
Thanks to LittleWing, we have this excellent video, "My Neighbourhood - A Just Vision Film": http://www.dailypaul.com/326885/my-neighbourhood-a-just-visi...
"The Chosen", linked below, is fiction based on the life of the author. "My Neighborhood" is a real life documentary. Both are definitely worth watching. Click on the link above for the documentary.
Given the many posts about Israel lately, I thought it would be good to take a break from the tensions and learn about what was going on in the Jewish communities in United States around the time of the UN vote for the Partition of Palestine.
The film I chose for us is based on the first, best selling book written by one my favorite authors, Chaim Potok. http://www.jewishvirtuallibrary.org/jsource/biography/Potok.... Potok's works give us a wonderful up close and personal look at the various sects of the Jewish community in the United States. He let's us observe situations through his eyes, what he lived and observed growing up entrenched in a Jewish community but, he doesn't try to persuade us to favor one side over the other.
Here's the trailer - link to whole film below:
In "The Chosen", Potok shows us what was going on in the Williamsburg section of Brooklyn, NY, between the Hasidic community and the Orthodox community during the closing years of WWII and hostilities between the two groups during the time of the formation of a Jewish State, Israel. The story is a powerful, moving one. You will laugh, you will cry, you will learn a whole lot, and hopefully, you will thoroughly enjoy this great story.
(The "wedding scene", with Rod Steiger playing the part of the Hasidic Rabbi, is a classic! When the Rebbe dances, it is a mystical experience and Steiger does it soooo well! http://youtu.be/gAoMiZxQcSI)
