It is some kind of an ad? Spam? Spam doesn't just show up in your inbox. It shows up on the Daily Paul.

What do you do with this post? With that brand new user, shastashimpqjniftbe. (Who didn't even bother to leave us an introduction. Bad manners, but then again, bots don't read instructions.)

I just wanted to share that, because deciding on issues like these is work for me and the mods.

It's filler for the JTRIG style disinfo shills.

I've seen this a 1000 times over on Reddit.

All disinfo agents need a posting history... so they employ bots to build up the character.

If it was an ad bot, it wouldn't be posting ads for google.com

Tools of war are not always obvious. The worst weapon is an idea planted in the mind of man. Prejudices can kill, suspicion can destroy, and a thoughtless, frightened search for a scapegoat has an everlasting fallout all of its own.

Michael Nystrom's picture

That is an interesting theory

How do you see it on Reddit? Reddit has this problem too? How do they deal with it?

But if they're having bots build a character, why the BS text? And furthermore, why the links? That doesn't stand up.

If I wanted a posting history, I wouldn't post bs like that. There is much more generic stuff you could do.

"Great article! Thanks. I never thought of that."

It is not a bot. A bot could not have made it in here, past the Captch (I don't think). So it is human.

Who could we ask?

He's the man.
Garan's picture

It could be a Cyborg, so to speak.

It could be a combination of a bot and a person.

The captcha is given to a human to enter the captcha text, and the bot does the rest.

Just throwing that out there.

Also, I read in a article within this past year that there is at least one technology that can successfully automatically recognize captchas.
So, the bot game might go up a notch fairly soon.

That's why I'm thinking that crowd-sourcing the duty of flagging bots and spam might be the way to go, long term.
As long as you throttle the number of new users down so that bots can't overwhelm the population of new users, the existing users may be able to hedge-off the influx of bots and spammers.

You could also throttle the number of posts a new user can make, say, in a day, week, or month, to reduce the impact of the malicious entities.

Garan's picture

B.T.W Yahoo email used throttling to offer unlimited space

Some Yahoo people figured out that they can offer unlimited emails, so long as they limit the speed at which people can send/receive them.

Anyone who emails at full throttle gets reviewed.

So, for normal use, the number of emails processed and stored seems unlimited, yet any abusers are limited by throttling.

Clever Yahoo people.

I guess it would be logical to ask Google.

Even if it is not them, they should know that someone is using their name to spam.

He's the man.

Its all fun and games...

You could just check out its posting history..heh heh heh
Sorry man,I just couldn't resist
Looks to me like a chatter bot, they do make sense,if one can decipher, put into context, whats being told, then one could 'read' what is meant.
But hey,not to be an arse,I pointed out 2 bots here in the past, and went unheeded.maybe one should look to the past to not repeat the same in the future?

If we deny truth before your very eyes, then the rest of what we have to say,is of little consequence

Garan's picture

Was there a Captcha required for new users?

If so, maybe there is a better human test or tests out there that could be used.

Michael Nystrom's picture

Yes, there is

I doubt it is a bot. It is a human, in a spam farm somewhere. Maybe a virtual spam farm. Maybe someone working from home. But most certainly a human, doing register copy / paste work. Maybe he or she got paid a penny for this.

Again, the question is: Who's paying?

He's the man.
bigmikedude's picture

Ahh, yes.. That puzzling question. "Who's paying?"

But the satisfying answer to that question after looking at his account status is -

"Who won't be getting paid any further?"

That is not a bad idea

We'll look into that after we finish with the issues we're working on now. Thank you.

He's the man.

It's Spun (Unique) Content, Likely Testing If The Posts Stick.

It's good enough to give a new mod pause, or a pass from a lazy/non-modded forum.

They'll do this thousands of times a day (all over the web), and then search in a week or two to see what stuck and what didn't.

Then they'll either edit the original post, build up some accounts with a little post history and let them age or have a list of sites to target for easy spam in the future.

Also, couldn't check the user profile but wouldn't be surprised to see a link in there either.

Michael Nystrom's picture

So we can all agree it is spam, but then the next question is

Who placed it?

Who paid to place it?

Was it a bot? Was it Google itself? Is Google doing some kind of testing of its own?

Honestly I have no idea. A bunch of other sleepers blew in at the same time. I put a partial list in a comment below.

He's the man.

It seems to be a bot

I've seen this on other forums and the forum for an mmorpg game a couple of us built some years ago. I've read that some build malicious bots that will rampantly multiply in members and posts counts by the day in order to basically crash it with a flood of gibberish eventually.

There's a bit of speculation on the purpose other than the malicious flooding such as that it is 'hacktesting' to find a way to completely lock up communication portals on the web. For whose purpose? I don't know I am sure it must be a fantastic conspiracy waiting to be proven as fact.

Captcha has been failing at stopping them too. I admit, I used to cheat on a mmorpg when I was a young PITA, using a bot to grow 24hrs a day and had every captcha image in the games database programmed in my bot. The bot could scan the captcha image and type in the correct code on every 45minute captcha check the game put up. I am no hacker either, in any way, I just putter outside the box sometimes.

A way around the bots is too create your own custom captcha check, make several folders of several different captcha images and rotate them out every so often. I have no clue how long that would work these days though...
The good hackers (NSA too Im sure cough cough) likely have all the captcha codes broken that, websites purchase use of from captcha Inc or whatever, on the simpler ones that simply have you type the letter and number combo you see that is an image and not freshly and randomly created.

Another one is to shut off new membership sign ups, hehe.

My 2 cents for what it's worth.

If a human compiled that

I feel sorry for them and their Chinese spam routine... It's a bunch a gibberish relative to the latin space fillers used during a new website build. No direction points made in any kind of a flow or thought pattern nor relative to the title really.

looks like spam

Based on not following simple directions as stated in the new member sign up , better luck next time the Ark opens. I break the rules but follow the signs =) (MANP = exception)

I just wanted to give the readers here a peek at (just a little) bit of the challenge me and the mods deal with in running the DP on a day-to-day basis.

He's the man.

Something wrong with its syntax?

Am I the only person having a hard time understanding what in the world this post was trying to say?

Michael Nystrom's picture

Yeah, I can see that

I'm being a little to intimate. I'm having a conversation with myself, basically.

Thanks for pointing that out (though I kind of knew it already, too).

In a nutshell:

Registration has been closed for a long time. I've been opening it up, randomly, here and there. One of the "people" who signed up had the above username, and made the above post on the DP. To me, it is clearly spam. To the untrained eye, like say, to the eye of a new mod, it might cause pause. (In fact it did.)

So I just decided to call attention to something people here never see, because normally it is taken care of. Spam on the Daily Paul is a rare occurrence. So I just wanted to point out what it looks like.

But it brings about interesting questions. Who are these people? I just killed about 10 more spam accounts.

Usernames like:

None of these usernames, btw, bear any resemblance to the email addresses they've registered with.

They are here to spam. Pirates are trying to knock the door down to get in here.

The question is why?

He's the man.

I have a crazy thought
