Uncle Sam wants you to keep Backyard Chickens... before food stamps...

Awhile back I stumbled upon this and printed it for the fridge. A couple of my roommates would always give me grief over the chickens I kept in the backyard. They didn't know that it was their patriotic duty!

Twelve Oh One's chicken flyer...

Very funny! Just to be clear: I think having chickens is wonderful, I would love fresh eggs. However,I am not capable of fully caring for chickens on my own(the clean up) and while my husband has good intentions he will not be the one left to keep up with them.

TwelveOhTwo and I have an ongoing debate about this

So I printed it out and stuck it on the fridge. Just wait 'til she wakes up! :)

I love you. I'm sorry. Please forgive me. Thank you. - Fully Informed Jury Association - Jin Shin Jyutsu (energy healing)

The MIC has no use for kids who know how to raise chickens.

They'd much rather have them sitting in front of a video screen learning how to kill remotely and depending on corporate farms for their sustenance.

There are no politicians or bankers in foxholes.

The food stamp thing

Has always seemed a bit perverse, especially now that it's the only
assistance a lot of people can receive, in that food is something that
many people could produce substantial amounts of on their own, even
in urban environments while many other things basically must be purchased
w/cash or equivalent.

During the great depression those people who could stay on their own
land were relatively much less vulnerable than those who were homeless,
in urban areas, etc.

In Brazil anyone poor enough automatically qualifies for direct cash assistance.

One argument for a guaranteed minimum income is that it is simply cheaper than
what we do now (while leaving a lot of people who need help without any). Not to
mention far less intrusive.

There's a good discussion of the rationale for it (along with lots of other thought-provoking stuff) in the book "Communitas" by Paul and Percival Goodman:

The current American system is mostly welfare for bureaucrats and to reduce people
to perpetual dependence and acceptance of intrusion into their lives. Not about uplifting things like backyard chickens, unfortunately.

I was just telling

my wife last night that I wanted to start to raise chickens. I didn't know I was being patriotic.. Awesome! Thanks for posting!

My favorite chicken video
He was not quite 2 when I took this vid.
It is sad and funny how self-reliance was "American" and now "the American dream" is life-long debt and government assistance.

I was excited to read...

that an interested child could handle the responsibility of looking after chickens and a random grown person simultaneously. Kids back then really were far more responsible!

At their inceptions, the #Liberty, #OccupyWallStreet and #TeaParty movements all had the same basic goal... What happened?

please stop....

..yer killin' me.
That tickles.
Seriously, I think you may have spotted a comma there that I didn't see.

dynamite anthrax supreme court white house tea party jihad
to be continued

just backwards wording...

"an interested child, old enough to take a little responsibility, can care for a few fowls as well as a grown person."

Hey, do you know what they called the guy who proofread Hitler's speeches? ... Grammar Nazi.

At their inceptions, the #Liberty, #OccupyWallStreet and #TeaParty movements all had the same basic goal... What happened?

Why can't we go back to simpler times?

I'm impressed that the space for this ad was donated by the publisher (instead of by "the ad council," "state department of health" or some other bureaucracy that exists today.

I get grief and, a lot of times at the same time, interest, in my "flock" of 16 hens and 2 roosters. However, in a months time, I don't have to buy eggs. What I sell makes enough to pay for the feed I buy to supplement the scraps. Plus its a hobby on the side between keeping them, selling eggs, and hatching chicks. Plus, I can brag about all the "chicks" that have been at my house ;P.

Then uncle sam ought to stop passing local ordinances against it

It's not Uncle Sam

It's your "local" Neighbors and Mortgage holders. Because their property values are more important to them than anything else. They use these tools to control you :

Homeowners Associations (because they want everyone to be exactly the same).

Planning and Zoning (because no one is "Allowed" to have activities they are not properly zoned for).

Code Enforcement (Because these guys are ruthless in their goals to someday be a "Real Cop").

It all boils down to your "Local" greedy Neighbors not wanting to "Smell" it in "Their" Neighborhood.

Unconstitutional War - "The story you are about to hear is true; the names and places are being changed to protect the guilty."

So true

My town is considering "allowing" chickens. But I'd have to pay the zoning board $10 for a permit, and I can only have a certain amount (most likely only two, and NO roosters allowed). And I have to "check with my neighbors first" and then, if my neighbors "allow" it, (she won't) THEN I have to have somebody come and inspect the coop & birds to make sure I'm not breaking any rules. Did I mention the CHICKEN COOP has to meet the town building code requirements? Lol

“Don’t be in a hurry to condemn because he doesn’t do what you do or think as you think or as fast. There was a time when you didn’t know what you know today.” -Malcolm X

It's incredible

Planning and Zoning is one of the greatest reasons our economy is dead. You are lucky if they don't make you pay for an environmental impact study and a Livestock "quarantine" first!

Unconstitutional War - "The story you are about to hear is true; the names and places are being changed to protect the guilty."

18 hens and 2 roosters,

and the neighbors are not shy when they're outta eggs. LOL

I've done my patriotic duty.

I've done my patriotic duty. I really feel as though I grew up in the wrong time period. I get the same grief too, mostly from the Baby Boom and Xer generation. People my age are more open minded and like the idea.
