Back to School: It's the Students' Turn! (To See Their Bill of Rights Violated)

It's long been true that teachers had to watch what they say in the classroom,(for example, a history teacher mentioning the benefits true Christianity brought, or a science teacher mentioning the evidence of intelligent design).... while the students had more liberty. Now the students are feeling the jackboot of statism on their backs as well. John Whitehead, of the Rutherford Institute and author of A Government of Wolves lists several ways the student is being treated more like a dissident from a police state, and less like a free citizen. Zero tolerance policies, Surveillance technologies, Metal detectors at school entrances and police patrolling school hallways, Standardized testing and Common Core programs are just a few of the ways used to program little statists, and squash dissent. We are beginning to hear more stories about children being tasered for talking back, and other horror stories.

We hit the eject button

Our son was in pre-K, kindergarten and 1st grade in our public school system. During the 1st grade, we saw, first-hand the horror called "common core". Among other things, it implements the most bizarre method to "teach" math that anyone could imagine. When our boy finished the 1st grade, we said "ENOUGH!" and wrote the formal letter to the superintendent of the county school board - "Notice of intent to establish and maintain a home school program" and, in the official "We're getting our son the fuck out of prison" letter, I used a few lines to explain exactly why we were doing it. I explained that we believed that subjecting our child to the public school system was tantamount to child neglect and/or abuse. I bet that hit them like a sack of hammers on the head - LOL

We're now embarking on the Ron Paul home school curriculum! Woo-hoo! We're doing something RIGHT and it feels good!

The school down the street has

an autistic child whose main attempts at socialization are describing the most explicit or violent things he knows. He doesn't pick up more minor social reactions so when he wants to get a social reaction from someone, he goes for something jaw-dropping and it's an improvement that he has learned he can get people to turn their heads toward him with something verbal instead of throwing something at them.

What comes out of his mouth and what he draws is pushing the limits of what other parents might allow their children to be exposed to. The school isn't tasering him or locking him in a closet or arresting his parents to question them about how a nine-year old can draw the explicit pictures he draws (recreations of playground graffiti) or if he has access to the guns, bombs, nooses, and fighter jets he talks about. The teachers and, to a small degree, the other kids are trying to teach him other ways to communicate and it's positive for the kids to see someone being treated with patience.

My point is not every teacher is contractually obligated to be foolish at every opportunity. They have some leeway and choice in this. (Though that child may need to be sheltered from interactions with police or introduced to the local ones in a very controlled manner.)

Thank you. There are always exceptions to the statist

public school image, I'm so glad you live near one. The reason this was posted is that more and more, we are seeing the militarization of public Schools, and this needs attention. None of them should become what German schools under Nazi Germany were.

The district isn't a utopia

This example is just a bubble of sanity. The rest of the district and town are a strange experiment in how much business interest and government resources can be mixed together when the people don't pay attention.

The bullying situation in the schools is intractable due to the need to fake a squeeky clean image for whatever the officials are up to. Since the district refuses to admit bullying happens at all, the consequences of burying the reports and shutting up the complainers are devastating.

Homeschooling

Because I guarantee my daughter would be expelled first day of kindergarten.

I detest the public schools

Thank you for posting this article. I shutter when someone shares on a Christian homeschool loop I'm on that they are not going to homeschool any longer and put their child in the public school system. This won't go over well with some reading this probably, but if you are a Christ follower you need to understand that God gave YOU your children to raise and teach, NOT the government. He will make a way for you financially if that is a concern, give you the wisdom to teach them what they need to learn and so forth.

I shared the following information some time back regarding homeschooling and hope it will be helpful to some.

We take the relaxed/unschoolers approach. We don't have evaluations done and are signed up with Florida Unschoolers https://sites.google.com/site/floridaunschoolers/ to report our days of schooling. I think every county has different requirements so you need to research that. I know about Florida Virtual School but would never have my children take part of it because who is "monitoring" them and what are they "teaching" my children? It's not their place or business to do this. Also, Common Core aligned I believe.

You can find many free resources and really don't need to buy anything. Also, you might want to receive emails from HSLDA http://hslda.org/
They produced the recent documentary below.

Please pass on this short documentary about Common Core called "Building the Machine" https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zjxBClx01jc

ABOUT THE FILM

"Building the Machine" introduces the public to the Common Core States Standards Initiative (CCSSI) and its effects on our children's education. The documentary compiles interviews from leading educational experts, including members of the Common Core Validation Committee. Parents, officials, and the American public should be involved in this national decision regardless of their political persuasion.

Thanks for the bump!

I thought this post would die unread with all the other brilliant posts that popped up around it. Thank you as well for the links, we are leaning toward the 'unschooling' approach since the School year will just have to wait until Sept. 2, and possibly until after Tabernacles.

Thank you!

I appreciate someone noticing this, it confirms my suspicions that liberty lovers should be up on the education system.

Alright, first bump mine...

Current news from John Whitehead and reported by Liberty Crier deserves a look. Teach your children well, at home.
