►"Incredible video from Bardabunga. and
Live Cam 2
►"This is lava draining out from under the crater of Bardabunga 25 miles away! The scale of what is going on is unlike anything seen in modern times.
►"The lava under the Bardabunga crater is draining out from the crater floor (the Caldera) which is over 6 miles in diameter and filled 2500 feet thick with ice covering the crater floor.
►"That FLOOR has dropped 25 meters (80 Feet) this week.
►"Scientists are now gravely concerned that the crater floor will soon collapse into a miles deep underground cavern filled with boiling white hot magma.
►"There's 1 trillion gallons of water in the ice in Bardabunga crater.
►"When that falls into a lake of magma it will instantly flash into steam expanding 600 times in volume.
►"The magma, suddenly no longer contained by the crater floor and 1 trillion gallons of water will act like a shaken soft drink can when the top is popped.
►"It will be an event unlike anything ever seen in recorded history.

Some Corrections/Clarifications
The current eruption is happening on a fissure that is located a tiny bit North-East of Bárdarbunga. The fissure is not located under Vatnajökull which is Europe's largest Glacier. Bárdarbunga is located under this glacier and that is why it's causing concern.
Image of the location: http://meteobergamasco.altervista.org/wp-content/uploads/201...
All the detail that was written in the original post only applies to Bárdarbunga if it goes off.
Also, This eruption is happening more than 100 miles away from Reykjavik in the SE portion of the island.
Only about 200,000 people live in Reykjavik and the surrounding cities. 320,000 people total live on the whole island mostly on the West coast, some on the North coast and very few on the South and East coasts.
That sounds like a blast
Boiling Caldera alone is cool.

Good God. Is this on Iceland's mainland or one of the islands?
I remember a volcano blowing many years ago on one of the outer islands of Iceland.
But if this is on the Iceland mainland it's very concerning because 300,000 people live in Reykjavic alone I believe.
Would the island survive it?
Iceland is the final resting place of Bobby Fischer - maybe the most honest man to ever live on this earth.
Perhaps Bobby is very pissed off!
I couldn't blame him.

What happens if we have a major ash discharge and global cooling? Good thing I didn't throw out those incandescent bulbs!
What do you think? http://consequeries.com/
OP quotes
I just read the article and didn't see those quotes mentioned in the OP. Are the quotes from the video or something? I'm unable to watch that right now. If it's from the video, who's in the video (is it credible)?
This almost sounds like fear
This almost sounds like fear mongering and I am not sure if they are trying to scare people or simply stating the facts.
A simple bit of math will tell you what will happen to that much water and lava.
To climb the mountain, you must believe you can.
I'm with ya.
Personally I have yet to see ice or snow in any of these photos or videos. It looks like it might be a little warm for solidified water in the area. I noticed this the other day and thought for sure man made global warming would have been blamed by now. I have pointed out before how many of these areas shown as proof of global warming with ice and glacier melt were areas (coincidentally) that had volcanic activity. This was always missed by the 'news' I saw and if they did do a story on the volcanic activity it was never tied to the melt.
So, I find it hard to believe there is a trillion gallons worth of ice on the creator floor, unless the creator is much larger and maybe off center to the current lava flow.
I'm no volcanologist but would think given there is lava flow pressure is being released so the threat of a massive explosion is lessoned. It is the volcanos that swell with little release of pressure that really pop. A trillion gallons of water hitting white hot lava will surly lend itself to quite a steam bath but how big a bang ...?? My little bit of math - 1 trillion gallons of water x 3.785lbs(US) would = ~1.9 million tons. Earthquakes I could see happening with this much weight suddenly being gone in addition to the pressure release of the lava flow itself.
Here’s what a crater floor collapse looks like
Interesting videos of two Hawaii Kilauea Volcano crater collapses which occurred in 2011, the first on March 5, 2011, one week before Japan’s 9.0 earthquake in which the floor dropped at least 377 ft. Another collapse occurred August 4, 2011 in which the crater floor dropped 260 to 280 ft.They described the first as “Hawaii Kilauea Volcano drains one week before Japan 9.0 earthquake…a possible precursor to large Pacific plate earthquakes?”

Discusses the larger concern over earthquakes vs. the volcanic eruptions themselves.

This says “volcanic activity is known to trigger earthquakes.” However, the evidence of earthquakes triggering volcanoes is less known due to the sparseness of the global record; statistically they only show a weak connection.

Obsidian!
Don't you play Minecraft? You can also chop hard things with soft things by hitting it more times.

Don't play but...
Don't play, but as a rockhound I collect real Obsidian quite often, would you like to have some to display on your nick-nack shelf? lol.
Or you could do this very first technology :

Actually, the kids at the cub scout campout this weekend
were beside themselves for finding so much obsidian along a hiking trail. I have a question. Is there usually some spherical, molten-looking obsidian found where small, gravel-sized obsidian is found? We weren't sure if it was obsidian or something lead left behind by the vacationers who were in the area in the '20's so we didn't let them keep those pieces.
Defend Liberty!
Really? was it metallic?
Was it metallic and malleable or was it stone like Obsidian? Did you try to fracture a piece? Small to large "Lava Bombs" will be found in the same areas Obsidian are found and would be "Molten" in appearance, sometimes translucent most times opaque along side the Obsidian.

From what you said
it might have been the lava bomb. We just weren't keen on handling it enough to figure it out since one guess was lead.

As luck would have it
I got water,and lots of it :)

Hey Deacon
Yep, all you need are molten rock and lots of water to make the conditions right for Quartz, Gold and Silver to form!(Well, collect together I should say).
I hope you have been well my friend?

Indeed
It was an interesting link you provided. It was something I never knew.
I am pretty well, thank you for asking, and just how are is your bad self doing? :)
I have built a rocket mass heater for the house, next is the bench for seating area, might be my bed :) It seems to work rather well.
Stay well and on top my friend

Hanging in there
Still trying to hang in there my friend. Life just keeps throwing speed bumps in the way and I keep going around them even though they seem to be getting bigger everyday :)

You can't go around speed bumps

I have come to believe, when one lives life for the world, the world loves them back,But,when one lives for not the world, all manner of bad things take place...and all the time. You might say,if life hands you lemons, and all the time, you are blessed. Personally,I see it as a constant battle, even amongst the closest of the close of family members
The ones who will screw you the hardest, are the ones closest to you amongst your family, but hey, they do smile,so its all good, right?

Dad says if you never breakdown, have a flat tire or run out of gas, life would be pretty boring. Lol.
I try to live by this theory, but it's definitely getting more challenging to do so.
Yeah I know, Family can be rough, The tribe comes first in my book, Even though sometimes it is bumpy :)

Dealing with ash in airplane jet engines
Jet engines run at about 1500 C and ash melts at 1100 C which causes a type of enamel to form on the fuel injectors and shuts the engine down.
A blast from the past on this: http://www.nytimes.com/1989/12/16/us/jet-lands-safely-after-...
The Icelandic volcano in 2010 grounded planes.
This article on the 2010 volcano also mentions some prior volcanic activity when engines were shut down (incl. the Alaskan incident you referred to). http://www.nbcnews.com/id/36543312/ns/travel-news/t/volcanic...
And now here's a scary thought. "The 2010 eruptions of Eyjafjallajökull were volcanic events at Eyjafjallajökull in Iceland which, although relatively small for volcanic eruptions, caused enormous disruption to air travel across western and northern Europe over an initial period of six days in April 2010." http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2010_eruptions_of_Eyjafjallaj%C...
What they're talking about now, with Bardarbunga, is *not* relatively small but colossal: "unlike anything seen in recorded history." This would hardly be just a "European" problem.
