Rupert Murdoch: Senator (Ron Paul) in 'fake online campaign'
Submitted by tpb2 on Thu, 10/11/2007 - 22:29
An Australian newspaper owned by News Corporation says that Ron Paul's internet support is a "fake grassroots movement organised by party staff." It claims that the Youtube numbers are fake and outrageously high for such a unknown candidate. Even so, this hit piece has no merit as it calls RP, "Senator Ron Paul" throughout the whole article. But, it is still outrageous as it is Australia's most circulated paper according to Wiki.

Not all blowback is bad...
I think that this was a perfect way to get the attention of an audience for RP. Imagine if we digged the article with the proper headline. We could ultimately use this completely to our advantage.
This only helps Ron Paul
This only helps RP with the media and the subsequent outrage from the general public over the obvious and outrageous oversight.
Dr. Paul has magic powers?
So were did the $1.2 million raised in seven days come from? Is it all fake money too? How is it Paul -for being so unknown- raises as much money as McCain?
Google -who owns YouTube- has listed, below the profile of ronpaul2008dotcom says clearly: "Channel Views: 4,518,156". Google is in on this conspiracy?
It was funny but the media gloated over Edwards who raised $1 million in 11 days, yet it ignored Paul.

Well, I have literally emailed about 7 editors. Of the specific papers. The problem is, its on news.com.au, which owns 9 massive papers all around Australia. The article is shown on all those sites then... I have also contacted an Australian program called 'Media Watch'...
Lol, can't make up my mind whether this is good or not. All those Aussies seeing the video, IS.. but then if fox news get a hold of it, then it won't be. EH, not like it will stop Ron Paul. Not so sure the guy who did it is a faux-fred thompson reporter. I mean, Posts: 1,150, thats alot of faux.
Well, he must have read your post ...
Reading it now, it appears ALL errors have been corrected (Senator - Congressman) (De Bots - De Bats)
So I guess he really believes it or his boss caught him...either way..it's of no concern..
Anyone watching the videos will see the supporters and soon there will be no denying that we exsist for real...=)
omfg...
Thanks soulmantim.
And the errors have ALL been corrected. omfg.
They haven't pulled it down? IT NEEDS TO BE, or Fox News will run a bullshit pitch taking away American voters. Australian's can't get him to the primaries.
What am I doing now?
- Writing to Media Watch (RIPS into false/retarded journalism) hopefully they'll do a segment on him. More pressing issues in Australia though, so unlikely.
- Sending that link to editors at Herald Sun.
Don't thank me...
Thank Digg and fredthompsonforum.com
Actually...now that I know the full story...lolz
A Faux Pro-Fred Thompson (Actual Pro-Ron Paul) forum member is responsible for this getting published.

A comment from an Australian Perspective...
I believe there is two possible scenarios to Mark Schliebs reasons for posting this article.
ONE, he is being serious (and his job is to post retarded storylines, merely search his name on their site; other articles include:
- Man 'slept next to corpse after murder' | Herald Sun
- New York politician drops f-bomb on TV - 15 times | Herald Sun
- Virgin boss flies by seat of pants, literally | Herald Sun
- Artists turn Canadian road into a river | Herald Sun
- Navy sailors 'shower in diesel' | Herald Sun
- Greens stunt falls to shreds | Herald Sun)
His bid for online views, is a sad attempt at sensationalism. I assume its not in the paper?
TWO, he is a closet Ron Paul supporter. As a few here suggested, the headline sensationalism of the story, grabs views and increases awareness potentially as - he POSTED one of the best Ron Paul video's out there. Along with providing a LINK to Ron Paul's channel. He is a Murdoch employ and thus you can choose to believe his done this 'opinion piece' negatively towards Ron Paul, but in actual fact - he's endorsing the man, under his employee nose! If you actually look at the article closely, it has a lot of "possible" / "maybe" / "sounded like" in it. Along with his deliberate misspelling of the professor's name.. De Bats. LOL!? Plus making him a senator. Haha.. His *mistakes all seem to line up with giving Ron Paul a more positive appeal.
I prefer to think Schliebs is doing the latter, and I can only hope. Either way, he's actually doing Ron Paul & Australia a favor. No person who has a soul, and isn't an idiot - wouldn't be moved by that video. I guess only way to know is to ask Schliebs himself, off the record. Thanks for increasing Ron Paul's support!
First two things I noticed
I like everyone one on Daily Paul noticed the exact same things.
What I find is funny is that Mark Schliebs missed two things,
That RP isn't a Senator
and that he misspelled Mr. De Bats name, as De Bots.
I just sent a letter to Mr. De Bats to see if I could get Mr. Schliebs email address since I can't find it anywhere on news.com.au and to actually confirm if he had spoken to Mr. Schliebs at all concerning the article.
I also asked him if he had done ANY research prior to giving his opinion or did he just wing it? (I asked nicer than that, but you get the point.)
I am going to bet that Mr. Schliebs hadn't contacted, YouTube, Myspace, Meetup Alexa or Compete to actually get some evidence to back up the article .
Well, we can now say we have hit Stage 3, 'Fighting Ron Paul'
Come January when the winning starts, that will complete Ghandi's quote completely.
1) Ignore (Check)
2) Ridicule (Check)
3) Fight (On going)
4) Win (inevitable)
It's Gandhi, not Ghandi.
Gandhi.
My Response to the Aussies
Your recent article by Mark Schliebs on Ron Paul is a new low in journalistic integrity--which is quite an accomplishment given the behavior of our American press lately. I was not aware that the word of an American studies professor counted as sufficient evidence for one to commit libel--for that is what you have done if you are insinuating that Dr. Paul or his campaign is attempting to deceive people in such a way as you say. I suppose also that they must have counterfeited the $5.1 Million dollars he raised this past quarter. Perhaps you should--Oh, I don't know--consider that people in America are tired of being slaves. Perhaps you should consider that we are waking up and wanting to get off the road to serfdom. I am disappointed by your lack of any principle, but I ask myself: why should a propaganda source in Australia have any more principle than a propaganda source in America? Good day to you.

Great PR
Nothing like "suspicious" and "fake" and a link to the "most popular" video, to stir up interest and increase viewing of the video, taking it to even higher numbers.
Maybe the journalist knew exactly what he was doing... right under the noses of his bosses. Love it!

You know, on second thought,
You know, on second thought, maybe he just wanted to post the video because it was so awesome and needed an excuse.
I suppose they could be right
And all those people demonstrating throughout America (and the world for that matter) are also fake, what fools.
Nearly 60,000
Nearly 60,000 views?!?
That's nearly 0.06% of youtubes daily views, IMPOSSIBLE!
Man I love that video though...
What did they say in their emails?
Thank you for the link to that video-- I must say it's the best video I've ever seen of anything, I believe. Masterful.
I've finally decided to send out a mass email on Ron Paul to everyone I know telling them about him, with this video. How did your friends send it to you? What did they say about it?
Anyone else who has sent out Ron Paul videos to neophytes-- what did you say to "convert" any of them? I know a lot of people will be put off by the first mention of the word Republican... I've been trying to figure out how to get around that. I think I'll also send a link to the "Democrats for Ron Paul" flyer with the ad.
Media Viper Bites Ron
.
Rupert Murdoch is a front man for Bush & Co. He is really quite irresponsible (but rich) but should be ignored. They run stuff like that to bait people. Don't give them the time o' day.
Or if you write anything, say, "Read your column and had a good laugh. How do you make this stuff up? It's hilarious! The Vatican should hire you..."
Here is "Professor of
Here is "Professor of American Studies" Email....

Please let the little foolish professor, Mr. Don DeBats,
know we are real!

is mailto: don.debats@flinders.edu.au
And I agree, maybe we should "clue" him in to do a bit more research before coming to such "fraudulent" conclusions. Let's all give him pointers to our Meetups!
He should know that while "astroturfing" is fairly common... it is to be found in the [so-called] front-runners like Romney, Guliani, and Clinton... NOT the Ron Paul campaign... heck they don't know WHAT we're going to do next.
Too funny and pathetic
You're right, this doesn't deserve the time of day and is ludicrous.
And as for this professor De Bats, sorry, but doesn't the name say it all?
Remember, the Aussies are socialists!
Re:Aussies are socialists!
Aussies aren't socialists. I looked it up, and the mean personal income tax rate in Oz is lower than here. Also, their Communist Party was dissolved in 1991.
Who cares?
The article ran in Australian media and the quoted expert ("astro-turfing") was an Australian university professor. Yawn, it doesn't matter.
Professor of American studies shows his ignorance
You are absolutely right. It doesn't matter.
How much do you want to bet that this "professor" (who is so lazy and stupid that he doesn't look into the issue before allowing his quotation to appear in print) is employed by a state university? A professor of American Studies who doesn't even know the difference between a Senator and a Representative? An actual scholar looks for contrary evidence, like 5 million dollars in Astroturfed contributions, before coming to a judgment.
His opinion has about as much influence on reality as a bug on a rail of Rearden metal about to be run over by a speeding locomotive.
Australia bizarre
I read that bizarre piece about an hour ago and I´m still fruitlessly trying to decide if this is a case of a stoned intern running amoc, serious ignorance by a real reporter or in fact a pathetic try of a hit piece. lol
They deserve a drought when
They deserve a drought when they let thier media print atrocious lies like this

Not fair.
I don't think that's fair. The author is a nobody who obviously isn't given any high priority news stories. Really, he must be awful if he is reporting on a foreign candidate because alot of people are watching his youtube videos.
Senator
I don't think we should tell them about their mistake. Let's let them remain looking stupid.
Ridiculous, but...
60,000 in 1 day? That is a whole new level of volume. Ron Paul's popularity is sky rocketing. I received the link for the new Ron Paul: A New Hope video from 4 of my friends today that aren't even die hard RP supporters. Very good stuff..
