Who likes chess?

Over the past couple of months as I've learned more & more about our country than I had in all my years past, I've come to realize something very important.

We don't play games often enough. If you're asking what I believe games have to do with politics, I'll explain. You see, I had a bit of an ephipany the other night. I've always enjoyed quality time with my kids. The time I've spent playing with them has always been time well spent. As they've gotten older, the games have gotten more complicated. I've played quite a bit...board games, card games, video games, outdoor games, if my kids wanted to play, I was and still am always up for a good game.

Recently, my son decided he wants to learn how to play chess. We've played in the past a few times here and there, but he never had the desire to learn how to think ahead as chess requires. I'd taugh him the mechanics of the game before he was 10, the basic movement of the pieces, and he mistakenly thought that he then knew how to play. Consequently, whenever he would ask me to play he'd brazenly refuse my advice and make his own moves, even when I warned him to think a bit about what could happen. He'd never use pieces in concert, ever. Needless to say, he lost those games. He couldn't see far enough ahead to know what course he was taking, and what the result would be.

Well, things have changed with my son. We've been playing every day for a little while now. He listens intently when I offer him guidance, and he asks questions often. He'll stare at the board for a while, think even longer, and evaluate what could happen. He's learning how to use pieces in concert, how to effectively see the board. If you play chess, you know that this is the part when you truly learn to play the game. It's the part where you wake up, and see how incredibly complex the whole is, and how such small moves can make all the difference in the end. I couldn't be happier, and I'm looking forward to the day he beats me.

There's a lot of people out there who don't play chess, who don't understand the signifigance of making small moves sometimes and they will always loose to someone who does. What will our next move be after today?

Oh yeah...don't forget to dust off your chessboard and play. It's good for your brain.

It has been awhile since I last played but it's an Awesome Game

I'll never forget the day when this one guy claimed to be superb at chess. He boasted about how great he was all the time so one day he came over to my place and I casually pulled the chess game out and asked if he wanted to play. He took the offer up. As we were playing, he did make some good moves however he almost went into shock when I placed him in checkmate with a pawn. I truly wish I had a camcorder recording it I'll never forget his face. I'm a very modest player, never claiming to be good and frequently said I use each game as a learning tool to better my skills.

Also, another time, I used to play this other guy pretty frequently, it was him he always asked me to play and I would always accept, we'd have good convos during the game, I recall him telling me he enjoys playing against me even if he does lose all the time and that it's only making him better. Well, the day finally came where he finally beat me. Which only made us play more because of the challenge he had become. I miss the good ole days.

Having noted all the above, RP needs to prove his national security credentials. He has to say exactly what he would do if there was a loose nuke determined to be heading our way. He needs to tell the public that he does not intend to dismantle the FBI completely, etc. He needs to cut into the national security vote that is clearly going against him (the main reason why he is not a frontrunner is that he talks past the people who are worried about loose nukes, etc).

Good analysis... and game plan. We have to keep chipping away at this, and we have got to convert the "national security" vote. There's only one flaw in this strategy (even though its the best so far). If we don't win anything today the media coverage will not exist. Something has to happen today.

Our next move...

1) Get as much bang as we can out of the National Convention.
2) Vote for Ron Paul as a write in if necessary.
3) Keep the movement moving forward by becoming leaders within the Republican Party.
4) Cheerfully spread our message for peace, prosperity and freedom until the next election. Using Meet-up groups and online forums.
5) Find a new candidate for 2012 (with Dr Paul's endorsement) and win the White House with the most organized grassroots movement in history.
6) Continue working to elect local and federal officials to office that understand the idea of limited government. For the rest of our lives.

We are the pieces in this game but we are different than chess pieces because we have the power to convert others to our side. First and foremost we must increase our ability to do that by understanding the meaning of liberty. We have been charged with the daunting task of becoming the most informed block of voters that has ever lived (except for maybe the Greeks). What an exciting time to be alive!

You are really talking about chess. I thought this was going to be a thread about how the CFR has just laid out a chess game for us to think we are having an election. But they are moving all the men around, they chose the players, they know the strategy and all the rules and they manipulate the rules to fit them. So does the mess we are in remind you of chess? I figure Rupert and Dave just sit in their towers and think about their next move.

I like chess. I'm not very good at it, but I do enjoy a game every once in a while.

Years ago, I decided to teach my wife the game -- I explained the board set up, the movement of the Knight, the Bishop, the Queen, the Pawns, etc., etc. Our first real game -- She won.

After years of chess...

It bores me.

I like to play the boardgame RISK with friends. It's always new, and forces you to think out of the box. Especially with variations like the Star Wars edition, where you can play either Classic Risk, or the Star Wars Risk, where you have cards that throw a random element into the game. Forces you to 'think on your feet' so to speak. Fun, fun, fun. :D

I haven't played that in years! It's in the closet, tucked away with a few others from my kids earlier years.

Why oh why have we forgotten as a nation and as a society how important it is to teach our children to think strategically? And what better way than thru play? Just remember...the more you play, the more you can learn.

I've been meaning to pick that up

I've heard that Axis & Allies is a lot of fun. I'll have to pick it up.

As for Risk, well, my son beats me most of the time when we play. It's just not right I tell ya...just not right...

Played that for years too.

But you always start in the same place, with the same countries, with the same resources. Gets boring. Also, not much fun with only two people. Whereas with RISK, you can play with 2 and a bunch of 'neutral' countries, and it changes every time. :D A&A is fun too though, if you have enough of the right people.
