MITT ROMNEY, MIKE HUCKABEE

West Virginia Done, Huckabee Wins (UPDATED)

Word from West Virginia:

CHARLESTON — The first round of voting has ended at West Virginia's Republican Convention.

With 55 counties voting:

Mitt Romney has 464 votes (41%)

Mike Huckabee has 375 votes (33%)

John McCain has 176 votes (16%)

Ron Paul has 118 votes (10%)

Because no candidate won a majority of the delegate votes, a second round of voting will occur between the top three vote-getters: Mike Huckabee, John McCain and Mitt Romney. As soon as those results are known, they will be released to the public.

The Convention is currently taking a one-hour recess, and is scheduled to reconvene at 1:30 PM.

UPDATE: Freddoso hears the Ron Paul backers will determine the winner between Huckabee and Romney.

ANOTHER UPDATE: Game, set, match, Huckabee wins West Virginia. Put 18 delegates into Huckabee's pile.

It appears on the final ballot, the McCain and Paul folks shifted to Huckabee over Romney.

This is perhaps a reflection of the risks of a negative campaign. Give people a chance to hit back at the guy who ran negative ads, and the target's supporters will take the opportunity.

YET ANOTHER UPDATE: Rush Limbaugh is discussing "collusion" between the Huckabee and McCain folks. But when McCain was knocked out, didn't his supporters have to go somewhere? (Same deal for Ron Paul's supporters.) If they had decided to go for Romney, would that have been considered "collusion" between McCain and Romney?

Interestingly, according to a local television reporter, Mike Huckabee pledged three national delegates to Ron Paul in exchange for his backers' support. Not confirmed. Sounds a little odd, as Huckabee doesn't exactly have a ton of delegates to throw around.

ANOTHER UPDATE: Fox News reports McCain supporters were told to vote for Huckabee if their man didn't survive the early rounds.

I'm getting e-mail suggesting this is nefarious or underhanded, and I'm not sure why. Team McCain needed to make sure Romney doesn't close the gap, so they vote for the guy who is less of a threat to close the gap in terms of delegates, Huckabee.

do these delegates still vote for romney or huckabee>?

were they bound?

and when huck finally quits

and when huck finally quits due to lack of money all those delegates will be up for grabs. another chance for ron paul to grab some more delegates. this is really for the long haul folks.

REally? http://www.cnn.com/EL

REally?
http://www.cnn.com/ELECTION/2008/primaries/results/state/#WV

say he won none in WV

are you in tune with the world around you

Do you see the asterisk?

Del* - The delegate column shows the most recent estimated number of pledged delegates from this state.

Emphasis mine.

Of course

MSM is not going to help us. Huckabee would have 0 delegates without Ron Paul supporters and Romney would of had 18.

What concerns me

What if Huckabee doesn't follow through on this or doesn't make it known?

Then what if he drops out tomorrow and tells his delegates to vote for McCain?

If the 3 delegates are guaranteed, then it was a good move, even if there are zero press people that know about it.

Let's See Who Wants to Be Nice to Us, Now

We are doing just fine.

Ron Paul Secures Three Delegates in West Virginia State Convention
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

February 5, 2008

ARLINGTON, VIRGINIA – In today’s West Virginia Republican State Convention, Republican candidate Ron Paul’s campaign secured three of the 18 national delegates up for grabs.

“Our goal is to secure as many delegates to the national GOP convention in Minneapolis-St. Paul as possible,” said Ron Paul 2008 campaign manager Lew Moore. “Securing three delegates in West Virginia is an important step in that direction. We plan on locking up more delegates before the day ends.”

In an agreement first reported by West Virginia television station WSAZ, the three Ron Paul delegates were secured through an agreement with the Mike Huckabee campaign.

Ron Paul delegates to the state convention swung their support to Huckabee – putting Huckabee over the top – after Congressman Paul was eliminated in the first round of voting. With three national delegates, Ron Paul secured 20 percent of the 18 delegates that were decided at the State Convention.

This is excellent. All

Has this story, regarding the 3 delegates for Paul, been

confirmed? I read that it had been "reported" by someone there but not confirmed by the Huckabee headquarters.

That quote above

was from a RP HQ blog

what chaps my rear

CNN reported Huckabee takes all 18 WV delegates - then credits McCain delegates for putting him over the top - No mention of Paul of course - chaps my rear

woooooooohoooooooooo!!!!!!!

E-mail and send this out to all!!!! Have HQ send out an e-mail - let's motivate those on the fence RP supporters....

Funniest Thing

McCain supporters also switched to Huckabee to keep Romney from winning - but they didn't get any delegates for doing so.

Someone knew what they were doing

well played by the RP caucus goers.

Too Confusing- what's the bottom line?

Too many words and too confusing.

In the final analysis how many delegates did RP get in WV?

HQ confirmed it

3 delegates out of 18. So 20% of the totyal delegates to ron paul. Nice job!

Instead of losing 18 to Romney

he only loses 12 to Huckabee and picks up 3 on McCain and Romney. Both McCain and Romney are no closer to clinching because of this state.

Great move.

LOL

This is great IMO. lol. I had already marked this off as a loss. To come in 4rth and get any delegates and 2nd and 3rd not get any was a great move.

Think of it this way,

Say you are running a race. You stumble and fall down. Thus unable to finish. Then when the medals are handed out you get the silver medal even though you dint finsih the race. hahaha.

This is great considering I was thinking it was going to be 0.

The strategy is working.....

RP is a genius!!!

With this deal we win twice.

We win 3 delegates.

We make sure the votes are split among more candidates, leading to a brokered convention.

win-win if you ask me

This is great news if you ask me, neither McCain nor Romney get any closer to the nomination, McCain and Romney will keep attacking each other over this, and we transform 118 votes into 3 NATIONAL delegates.

Ron Paul: From 0 to 17% delegates in mere seconds!

This rocks. This absolutely rocks. We have some very knowledgeable people in our camp.

RP2012!

exactly

It is brilliant!

Here you go!

MSM

The MSM (& Romney) seems to blaming this all on McCain supporters.

Guys this is politics

Why are so many of you mad that RP people in WV for switching to Huckabee? Good grief, we must win delegates. It is not a sell out, it is a strategic move. Quite frankly, a brilliant one. We need Romney and McCain on an even playing field bickering at each other while we silently pick up the delegates to challenge them at the convention...yeah I woudl rather be on the 15 than the three side. But we lost here. How mnay losers get 3 when the second and third place guys get 0? Come on!!!

For 3 delegates

Makes PERFECT SENSE to me. Why not? Better to get something rather than nothing!

Does my burka make my butt look fatwa?

Is that legal?

Can they do that?
