Better to be active minority in GOP or support LP or Constitution Party?

This question isn't specific to Ron Paul, but I'm interested to see what the activists here think. I recently registered Republican from LP and wonder which approach you folks think bears more fruit considering how tough it is for 3rd parties here in the US.

All of you are WRONG!!

I have been dying to see this question debated for a while and with all due respect, all of you are wrong, sort of. Let me explain...

Forget politics for a moment. Think only about strategy and tactics.

Since we are the political underdog, we should be employing ALL possible methods for putting liberty friendly people into political office...

Some of us will choose to run as or support Ron Paul Republicans and work to change the GOP from within; the rest of us must support these people.

Some of us will choose to run as or support Libertarian Party or Constitution Party candidates; the rest of us must support these people.

Hell, who knows if someone may not get real clever and run as a Ron Paul Democrat?! I mean let's remember, EVERY politician takes an oath to defend the Constitution, right?!

Instead of wasting time debating this question, and it is a waste of time, we should accept that we need to utilize as many angles and methods as we can to get our people into office.

Ron Paul Republicans, Libertarians, Ron Paul Democrats, Constitution Party people....my friends and fellow freedom fighters, bring them all on! We have many tools at our disposal to get politicians elected who will support and uphold the Constitution. The status quo will not know which way to turn as our message will be everywhere, coming at them from multiple angles.

There is no one right answer, there are many right answers. Stop arguing and start doing, that is the answer.

Thanks for letting me vent. :-)

I love you all.

Mark

p.s. please tell me what you think, thanks!

I will follow Rons lead. If

I will follow Rons lead. If he says to take over the Republicans then I will. I will follow Ron because I have faith in him!

Declare War on the GOP

Why would we stay with the GOP? To remain with the GOP at this point is an endorsement of their treatment of Ron Paul. Does anybody doubt the GOP is making a designed effort to minimize him and the real issues? The GOP is corrupt, period. (I'm not suggesting the Democrats are any better because they are not.)

We should go with a third party, accept we are smaller at first and then recruit converts from the GOP and Democratic parties. The key here is that events in both the economy and foreign policy will prove Ron Paul's positions right. I do not think we should underestimate how events in the very near future, especially in the economy, will provide an awakening and opportunity for growth and interest in a third party.

Our focus should not be limited to the Presidential race. We have a much better chance in congressional races, afterall, Ron Paul been elected 10 times! Even if Ron Paul were President, we still need more Ron Pauls in congress.

Register Republican for the primary...

....then after the primary, switch to LP or CP.

GOP

Take over the Republican National Committee

McCain on TV

saying he's the frontrunner and the "parts of the GOP" that are upset about that need to "calm down".

I won't for for McCain.

The GOP MUST be PUNISHED!That is the ONLY

way they will ever change....that means voting for 3rd parties that espouse our principles and letting the GOP know that they have lost our vote..If McCain goes down with a HUGE vote for the LP or Constitution Parties, then that will show that Conservatives and Libertarians voted not for the GOP Doofus, but for the better candidates of the LP and CP...They should start getting the message...of course, they are RINOS and rather dumb.....

Ron Paul'08

We need a strong, competitive third

party in this country and can be achieved much easier than trying to resurrect the gop. Voters don't have much of a choice with our current two party system. True, the track record for both the LP and CP are disappointing to say the least. However, both parties already have established themselves as viable parties, that are recognized in most of the 50 states. What they have needed is a viable presidential candidate who can propel them into worthy contention. Ron Paul can do that! The recent news of the Libertarian Party sending a wreath to the GOP is a step in the right direction. This showed me two things. First, the rip to gop is true. They prove unworthy of our Constitution and we the people. Second, I see this as an overture to Ron Paul to recommit to a party who represents his ideals. The majority in both the LP and the CP already support Dr. Paul as their presidential nominee. Why not join forces now? With our spirited grassroots and those veterans in both parties, we can gain much needed media attention and ensure Ron Paul is included in the upcoming presidential debates. These organizations have money to spend on a tactical campaign. Couple this with our internet following, which will recharge once the decision is made, and you will see a revolution explosion! There is much, much more to gain by this move than to continue in denial to think a couple hundred delegates (not close yet) is some how going to magically throw the convention in our favor. They want us out so let's get out in order to forge a new bolder and more realistic direction. If supporters think this is quitting, it's not. It is facing the facts. Look at ronpaul2008.com. The donations are trickling in. Why? Because in spite of all the gr efforts, little has been accomplished in winning a majority of republican voters. The GOP has no intention of letting Ron Paul gain a foothold and is determined to block him every step of the way including media blackout. On the other hand, by embracing a like-minded party, Dr. Paul will gain the media attention he richly deserves. Just changing parties will create media hype. He will now be free to genuinely attack his opponents in both parties and show the American people that he alone represents hope for the future of this great country by restoring the Constitution. Let us not quit this campaign, but rather rethink and redirect it to be most effective under the Libertarian banner. We can WIN!

Very well said!

I wholeheartedly agree! I wish I had more to add, but I'm about burned out arguing this case to those whom sincerely believe in the "delegate fairy". I will continue to wait.....hope to see ya on the other side.

I don't know if the Media would still give us any attention...ho

wever....It is the BEST TIME EVER for a conservative/libertarian coalition...Think of it...we will probably have not only 3 but maybe 4 or 5 different candidates running..there looks to be a recession on the way...BOTH major parties will nominate moaxes that are not particularly popular with alot of people...SOMEBODY even if NOT Ron...could unite the LP and the CP,The America First party, disgruntled conservatives and yes, many anti-war,civil liberties leftists...maybe even some Greens...It is the PERFECT scenario for a 3rd Party run......

Ron Paul'08

Well

Bob Debrosse, L, became the first LP Mayor(in Ohio, or ever?) in Piqua Ohio.
http://www.freedom2008.com/reader/archives/002695.html

This is all I could find about it.
Long story short, iirc, from the news.... in Jan 2004, the city council kicked out the mayor( a Democrat, who was caught doing something wrong... this is what I recall..may be wrong..it's happened once or twice before, lol), and Both Sides (city council, iirc) voted in this Libertarian fellow, Bob Debrosse.

The city actually looked better within a year.. seems some public areas were painted, cleaned up... and such(a big plus, believe me. I used to drive through there for a few years, a few times per week)....
and I did not hear any negatives on the news.

So, LP members can be elected, it appears.
Just FYI..nothing more.
Have a good week.
Less than 4 weeks to vote for Ron Paul in Ohio.
Brokered Convention Time!

GOP positions change rapidly. Stay!!!!

Remember what Ron Paul always says about his foreign policy: its the same that Bush ran on in 2000. While I have personally given hundreds of dollars and hours to the campaign, I have always known that there is about a 90% chance we'll be seeing a democratic president soon because of the Bush bungling of both foreign and economic policy. The GOP is going to have to wander in the wilderness for a while, and it is during this time that it will splinter and look for a unifying message. A return to conservatism can come out of this, but only if we are a part of the party.

The huge bulk of the party sees it more in terms of us vs. them, red vs. blue, either we're winning or losing and they're going to believe the republicans in charge regardless of the issues. They don't have any stance themselves, they do as they're told. We need to be the ones telling them what to believe!

The truth is that you need a blind mass of people pulling the 'R' or the 'D' lever for you to actually get elected.

Good point

enough to stay?....

I will remain an Independent

I will remain an Independent regardless. I live in Illinois and despite being one of the most opressive and taxed states amazingly you can vote for who ever you want in primarys. But if Ron Paul doesn't get the nomination and does not run in the general election I will probably vote for the Constitution candidate.

I want to break the parties up

Into sub parties.
Broaden the base and force a brokered convention every election.

Republican:
Conservative
NeoCon
Family Values
Libertarian
Constitutional

Democrat:
Greene
Pink
Fascist
Communist
Etc.

Each sub group gets to appoint a candidate any way they wish and then go campaign and collect delegates. That way people voices get to be heard, Media can not appoint, People can get more involved in the process.

My personal opinion & experience

Is that the LP spends a LOT of its time arguing about esoteric topics that have no possibility of coming to fruition, like the best two methods of how to privative all the roads and/or bridges in the state.

And then once they get it down to the best TWO methods, they of course get into a heated argument that splits the local members down to the point that half of them leave to for their OWN local libertarian group, which meets and discusses the best two remaining sub-methods of how to privative all the roads and/or bridges in the state, which leads to...

ad nauseum

And only on RARE occasions -- they will find some "celebrity" candidate to use in an attempt to "seize the crown" and run as Governor or something and then invest in a flurry of political activity securing ballot access, etc.

So... though I would think from my statement above that my choice is pretty obvious... better to get liberty-minded people together (the ones who are actually WILLING to do some solid long-term work) and get yourself and them involved in returning the Republican party to it's roots and core values. Since this has actually succeeded in getting people elected, and then *almost* succeeded in rolling back some parts of government, I think it is much more likely to be successful.

In addition, we have to remember that it is NOT just the office of President that matters -- there are hundreds of elected officials, and thousands of bureaucrats on a LOCAL basis that can make our lives much more oppressed and which need to be rolled back as well. The LP is pretty much useless in getting people (or yourself) into these posts, whereas the GOP is does so on a regular basis (we just need to improve their faithfulness to Liberty -- plenty enough of a task w/o reinventing the wheel again).

another good point

thanks!

Active minority

But you could - feasibly - do your part to see that these other parties are on the general election ballot with signatures and stuff

Infiltrating and taking back

Infiltrating and taking back the Republican party is a no brainer. I have been advocating that to Libertarians and CP folks for years but many wanted to lynch me. Now they know there is enough people to do it.

Don't hold out because of LP or CP party pride or just because of what the neocons have done the Republican label. It doesn't matter what we're called what matters is that we take the power back from them that they have stolen from us.

If I thought the LP or CP had a shot I would go to them in a heart beat, but they don't. Start taking back your local parties and running Ron Paul Republicans for congress and your local state houses. That's how we will take this country back.

If we take back our state houses we can nullify the federal government and their schemes.

I Agree, vote Ron Paul

I Agree, vote Ron Paul Republicans into offices at the local level, but is there away to promote which guys have the same views as Ron Paul?

The Seeds of Truth we Plant today will grow to be the Tree of Freedom tommorow.

The GOP will probably never get any support from me.

They promote old wornout ideas that they claim are "conservative" but they don't have a clue what "conservative" truly means. The GOP is the party of corporate greed, war, Patriot Act, Gitmo, Wall Street, and more.

I support Dr.Paul. That's it.

h-daddy

yes, but perhaps they are so wornout, a new message

can begin to infiltrate from bottom up, not top down. The democrats have no such schizophrenic issues as they promote a socialist agenda because they are socialists, LOL. They are in sync with themselves.

I don't want that party to be the only functional one in America. Maybe it's time for a revolution in the Republican party.

Face it

With the way the media is set up right now it is practically impossible for any non billionaire to run for national office as anything other than a D or R or if you have ties to lots of power groups in washington al a Lieberman. Really the only thing you can do to bring more libertarian ideas into government is by becoming active in the republican party. It won't be easy, but anything is easier than winning the presidency on a LP or CP ticket.

Change the Republican Party

That is my plan and I think the best route to long term success. I've voted for the LP for years, there has been no progress in how we have impacted American politics. In one year, Ron Paul has done more to advance the cause of liberty to a wide audience than all the years I've been voting Libertarian.

My meetup group has started a Young Republican Club here, maybe 16 members with 12 of them being Ron Paulites. (I'm too old). They will influence every young Republican that comes along for the next decade. There will be a couple million new 18 year olds next year and every year thereafter, there are millions of young people who aren't involved in politics and many of them will end up as Republicans, Ron Paulicans, if we continue the struggle. We will outnumber the neo-cons in only a couple years and we will run the party in a couple more.

Don't get me wrong, I won't give up voting for the candidate that best represents my views, which may often be Libertarian, but as far as building a party, I say that our best choice is to retake the Republican party, this kills two birds with one stone. Let the neo-cons be on the outside looking in for a change.

Constituion Party

I have been registered to the Republican Party since I was 18. After this election I plan to switch to the constitution party. I don't have a problem with the Libertarian Party execpt for legalizing drugs ( I have seen what they do to people first hand). Plus the Libertarian has a problem with Ron Paul on the issuse of free trade. I hope all the Libertarian people here aren't offended, just my humble opinoin.

First Hand Damage

Dan,

I'm not easily offended, if I were I likely wouldn't have spent the last three decades toiling for Libertarian causes.

With regard to damage done to people by drug use: Do you mean tobacco, alcohol, or prescription meds? All quite legal, of course, and responsible for more deaths and injuries than all other drugs combined. If you're giving THEM a pass, then please explain to me which presently illegal drug has done more damage than the very laws which proscribe their use. Which drug kicks down the wrong door, terrorizes the wrong family, and destroys the wrong property all on the basis of a faulty warrant? Which drug shoots down missionaries in Peru thinking they're drug merchants? Which drug raises more taxes, builds more prisons, incarcerates more peaceful citizens, and bribes more crooked cops?

There are all kinds of Libertarians, just as there are

kinds of Democrats and all kinds of Republicans.

We are a minority now,

but we are just starting. We can sweep Congress in 2010.
