It seems as if people are coming in droves in Washington state to vote today in the caucus. What's the purpose of the primary? In Louisiana, not many showed up for the caucus, and much more to the primary.

Caucus: DEPTH of support / Primary: BREADTH of support
A caucus ("depth") measures how passionate people are about a candidate. It takes a lot of time and energy to attend a caucus. That's why RP does well--his fans are rabid.
A primary ("breadth") measures how many people would be willing to vote for the candidate in a broad election. It's pretty easy to vote in a primary--just send in a ballot.
In Washington
49% of delegates are chosen by caucus today, 51% are chosen by primary vote on Feb. 19th.
