** WE MUST BECOME THE MSM – AN IDEA (BUMP this please in a major way) **
First of all, I agree with organizations like DownsizeDC.org that say elections come and go, and no matter how strong the liberty message may get out for that brief time, once the election is over, people will tend to forget what was said and go back to their everyday lives (present company excluded, I know, just hear me out). I would also agree that what is really needed, as DownsizeDC.org advocates through their Operation Everywhere goal, is for liberty ideas get out to everyone, everyday, everywhere. In short, we have to counter the garbage propaganda that’s been pushed down everyone’s brains for decades through Big Media, which, since it has been for a long time owned by mega-multinational corporations, has always been biased toward (and “in bed with”) Big Government. Either biased toward the Left (CNN, ABC, NBC, etc.) or toward the Neocon Right (FOX, Rush Limbaugh, etc.).
Okay, here I come to the point, but bear with me, this is going to be lengthy, like a manifesto, but it’s my best attempt at a fully laid out idea. Basically, I’m talking about creating a brand new cable network. The “Liberty Television Network”. Or the “Liberty Network”, or whatever name works best.
I know, I’m no Rupert Murdoch. In fact, I have virtually no money (especially after donating to Ron Paul!). But let me just lay out the idea, and maybe I can get several thousand heads to put together with mine to work out the details.
Number one, we want to reach the greatest number of people possible with liberty messages on a regular basis. We all know from this election (vote fraud through counting machines notwithstanding) that most people don’t get their information from nonfiction books or even the Internet. Yes, the Internet is fairly ubiquitous by this point in 2008 – but let’s face it, most people use it sparingly, just to get their email or to look up an occasional mainstream entertainment or news site, or to buy something from a mainstream retailer. Period. Most people don’t use the Internet in-depth for research…which is what the Internet was originally designed for! For most people, so that includes voters, they get their info through the stupid boob tube (or LCD or plasma as the case may be). That is why we must have a channel of our own, and access TV won’t cut it. An Internet channel won’t cut it. People won’t look for an Internet channel (unless, maybe, you advertise it on Yahoo, Google, or MSN). But even that won’t reach the most common denominator. No, a real cable channel, a real national cable or satellite network is what’s needed.
With such a channel, liberty-oriented ideas can finally be communicated to the masses through educational topical shows; through liberty-oriented news (telling people what’s REALLY happening out there – include bills that are quietly going through the House and Senate but are never discussed in the MSM); through PSA’s that talk about various topics from gun rights to Social Security and how it’s a Ponzi scheme. One PSA I saw around the time of Harry Browne’s Libertarian campaign said something like, “Did you know over 2 million lives are saved each year by individuals owning guns? Oftentimes without firing a single shot.” Stuff like that would be good. 30 or 60 seconds each. Perhaps during the news program, just before going to commercial, you could have a short quiz of the Constitution with upbeat bumper music. And get the kiddos educated right away on kids-oriented shows about the Constitution and such. And to keep costs down a bit at first, we could look for as many pre-recorded productions from various liberty organizations as possible. One that comes to mind is from the Ludvig von Mises Institute (www.mises.org) called “Money, Banking, and the Federal Reserve”. Very simple, understandable, but direct explanation of what government has done to our money over the last century and how it’s relevant today. A must see. I don’t see them charging a whole lot (if anything) for broadcast rights.
Other good programming: Documentaries about history, real history, about the American Revolution, the formation of the Constitution and the Bill of Rights, what the Constitution says (particularly the areas not often talked about like the enumerated powers in Article I, Section 8, and the 9th & 10th Amendments. Move a lot of stills around of the documents, intercut with interviews with historians, economists, and other experts on our side.
There could be many ideas for programming like the ones above. Whatever programming there is, the offerings would have to follow these basic principles for best effectiveness:
- They would have to be truly professionally produced. I’m talking no You Tube videos here. Sorry, I like You Tube videos, some are really good. But no, they still don’t measure up to a true professional production. We would need to find some real good independent video producers, videographers, editors, and motion graphics artists and hire them on freelance basis to supply the channel with good programming. Pay them (I’ll get to the money part shortly). Hopefully we could find liberty-minded professional video people out there who would be willing to do this and craft these things well. You could count me in as one of these people willing to freelance edit one of the shows, or something; I would do it for fairly cheap, but good. I couldn’t speak for the others out there, but at least I could contact a network of video professionals out there that I know.
- The programming would have to avoid getting too much in the “doom and gloom”, conspiracy theory, yet it would have to be direct and not mince words about the issues. I know there’s bad stuff happening out there, but being overly “Alex Jones” about everything tends to turn people off.
- In contrast, the programming needs to find a balance where it’s factual, but positive, emphasizing how much better our lives could be if we did things this way instead of the current way. In other words, the benefits of liberty in society. (That’s one thing about Harry Browne I liked so much – that’s how he focused his message, and people took to it; he wasn’t so much a griper as he was a seller of the benefits of liberty.) Where possible, programming could be even upbeat, or slightly humorous. Maybe a little political satire here and there, like Saturday Night Live. But not so outrageously cheesy like SNL.
As far as business model, again I don’t see an access channel here. People won’t take it seriously if it’s an access channel. Within reason (with relatively low budget restraints) this has to be a real cable network. Complete with a polished motion graphic promo with an “LN” logo or something. The network would sell advertising, particularly from liberty-oriented groups: Gun Owners of America, The Ludwig von Mises Institute, Swiss America, I don’t know. Here’s where my idea is kind of cloudy, because I’m not much of a businessperson at all. Who WOULD buy advertising on this channel? What liberty-oriented businesses would have the wherewithal to purchase network TV advertising? If they did, wouldn’t they be advertising on TV now? I don’t know. Maybe regular sponsors (not necessarily special liberty interest groups, but regular companies who happen to believe in liberty positions) would buy advertising if viewers took to the programming and soaked it up. Basically, though, I see revenue from three major sources: advertising, cable or satellite subscriptions, and donations. I just know from this Ron Paul campaign that if hundreds of thousands of people can and are willing to donate tens of millions of dollars to one presidential campaign, imagine what people could do on an ongoing basis. Maybe as the advertising revenue increased, the need for ongoing donations would decrease.
Of course, I don’t see this ever being a CNN or ESPN. But take, for example, a nationwide cable & satellite network like The Outdoor Channel. It’s on one of the higher tiers, like in the 1000’s on cable. It comes with a lot of cable systems’ sports packages. It’s not as high profile as CNN or MTV or what-have-you, but even in that high tier it still gets about 26 million viewers nationwide. Now, I use The Outdoor Channel as an example because, a couple of years ago, I did some freelance video editing of a couple of hunting shows. I edited them at the producer’s house. He basically had three Avid editing systems, nothing really fancy, and the shows themselves were shot by him and some of his other freelancers with small digital cameras (Panasonic DVX-100’s). In all, the shows looked pretty good and looked good enough for a major cable network. They worked. I also know of another national cable network that has taken off the ground in the last few years (or maybe satellite-only at this point) that deals with Christian issues and beliefs – purely from donations. It’s called the Gospel Broadcasting Network (www.gbntv.org). It’s not overly slick, but it’s professional, and gets the message across. So this kind of thing can work.
I figure as far as production costs it wouldn’t take a whole lot to put these shows together. The news show, well, that might be another story. Then you’re talking a whole news staff, studio, infrastructure, etc. I have no idea what it would cost to put a comprehensive cable network like this together. Anyone out there know of any effort like this already being done? Anyone have experience starting up a channel of any type, especially of this magnitude? None of us are Rupert Murdochs, but together we can deliver a powerful message, through the only medium most people really pay any attention to - television. Hence the voting results we have so far.
So, we must educate the public about how far our government has strayed from this country’s original ideals. How it’s been done incrementally, so they’ve hardly noticed, and in fact, they think the current status quo is normal. Wake them up, open their eyes, without “hitting them over the head”, and we will then start to see tens of millions, maybe hundreds of millions, of people start to vote for those candidates who will really change policy.
I would just hope in some way we could get this network put on a lower tier so more people would see it. And no one would have to buy any extra channel package to see the Liberty Network (what package would you put it in?).
Any thoughts, ideas, or whatever (“ebinrock, you’re a nut”) please feel free to send me at ebinrock@yahoo.com. Thank you.
By the way, I already thought of the logo – part of the “L” would look like an arm holding a torch, like the Statue of Liberty. Have to be careful not to copy Liberty Mutual Insurance’s logo!
Another by the way: In the final analysis, would it be cheaper to just produce short educational videos on various topics, put them on DVD, and mail them out to millions of residences across the U.S.? Would this be more, or less, effective than the cable channel idea? All thoughts appreciated.

You obviously haven't seen Fiat Empire!
Look people. We will get far more support if we show them the way in the simplest, kindest, good-spirited way possible. We don't want them to cower in fear. You have to realize that the older (voting!) crowd generally HATES violence. They need to be shown the truth in a way that makes them feel GOOD! As the old saying goes, "You catch more flies with honey than with vinegar".

I think we should pull our financial resources together and purchase a massive order...millions of copies of Freedom To Fascism. I think this movie is excellent and nails it; It is professionally done and available now. Pass out millions of copies to thinking people and direct them to ronpaul2008dotcom. I believe in general that we should focus on the younger crowd...under 40. I have found that the blue-hairs are lost as a result of many years of government propoganda. Less than 15% of 21 year olds vote! We need to win them to our cause! I am proud to be standing shoulder to shoulder with so many patriots. This is only the beginning. Ron Paul rEVOLution
If you are serious...
The first step is to write a proposal / business plan.
The second step is to contact the guy who runs the Charles Koch Foundation (http://www.cgkfoundation.org/). Lew Rockwell and Co. hate him, but he's got money coming out the wazoo, and he likes to give it to think tanks and organizations that promote freedom, free markets and libertarian ideals. They MAY just go for this idea.
Feel free to contact me if you want to toss some ideas around.

It's a monopoly. Your not getting in there. The internet is where you should take your channel. Otherwise you have no chance.

Yeah but Fox was more than willing to play ball.
Is this this channel going to play ball?
Soon..but for now....
I still think in the short term we should make some potent not so nice..ADS!!
Why have there been no anti war ads? That is what got us out of Vietnam.
It will reach the ones who are asleep.. Well the one's without Tivo that is.
I think we can also think of cheaper and more innovative ways of getting attention NOW, before your idea would manifest. Almost publicity stunts. Your idea is a wonderful idea and a huge undertaking. I hope we can do it but it has to be well thought out and planned.
ronpaulgrassroots.org will be a good place to talk about this as well.
Ads are not the answer!
Ads are not the answer to getting him the publicity he needs to win. They help but they are not enough. What we need is a publicity stunt that creates ripples of media stories through out the country! We need to quit talking to each other and start talking to the media with a combined voice. Then the rest of the people will get curious about whats happening and start to listen to what we have to say. A good publicity stunt can create virtually hundreds of stories for weeks at a time and the best part about all of it is its FREE!
If every one of us did what these guys are talking about here
http://www.ronpaulparties.com/node/23
We would have days worth of stories from local, national news sources, and political cartoonist all talking about what we did. Doesn't matter weather its bad or good because all publicity is good, especially when its free! Think about it.
Peanuts to Fix News
I can send some peanuts to Fix News but since they have marginalized and ignored the Ron Paul campaign like they have, I believe they will ignore this as well. I doubt we'll get hardly any, if any press out of it at all. See the PHONE BOMB post,,,it is something that we can all do now!
Whenever any negative propaganda surfaces about RON PAUL it just makes me more determined to help this man win the nomination and become the next President of the United States of America! No doubt that most all Ron Paul supporters feel that way as well.
My take on the idea
I think the best bet would be to go non profit, and figure out a way to get people to donate. A good way could be through money bombs sites or just charts with goals to hit. We would have to make someone in charge of funds, my guess is to make that man Ron Paul. If a lot of money starts coming in it might be too easy for someone other than Ron Paul to get greedy. I think if Ron Paul came out and said hey let's start a show based on my principles here is a site you can donate to, that would be the most effective way. We would all trust it enough to donate. I don't have Ron's number but maybe if enough of us email the campaign asking for it they may bring it up to him. God knows we would have plenty of writers finding information for the show. He would never have to worry about any of us going on strike. Go Ron GOOOOOOOOOO!
Those who expect to reap the blessings of freedom must. like men, undergo the fatigue of supporting it.-Thomas Paine
The R3volution requires action, not observation!!!!

Most journalists do not understand economics, nor, by extension, do they understand Freedom.
People who really understand economics don't often choose journalism as a career path. The go into more lucrative, technical or business professions.
So, when it comes to explaining the principles of Freedom, which are almost wholly dependent on an understanding of property rights (starting with the notion that each individual is sole owner of his body), journalists exemplify the metaphor of the blind-leading-the-blind. They can't explain freedom because they don't understand it. So, they ignore it or, worse, confuse freedom with safety.
How can we encourage young folks who value and understand Freedom to choose journalism as a career path?
Don't you see?
In case you've missed the millions of YouTube vids out there, that is what they slowly will become. Journalism as we know it is fading away. The new journalism is guerilla journalism.

The MSM
I think this a valid idea, becomming the MSM, we realize that the Major news corporations in this country have a stake in the election, making it impossible for them to be unbias. It's funny how people freak out when the MSM blacks out Ron Paul.
Of course they're going to do that, it is in there best interest, simple as that.
Now instead of complaining about what is, I like this guys line of thinking, you know, what can be.
We have no intrest but the Constitution, and that is the message that unifies our media voice. If we all got on our bulletins and On youtube and started starring people to the proper channels and where they can observe the facts and choose for themselves.
It would be a voice for the Constitution, our poor little constitution has very little voice these days, but some how out of this movement, I see it's voice growing in influence, and that make me happy and proud to be apart of this new media.

Better / Cheaper Idea:
Instead of TV, we could create a quarterly magazine and send it out to all registered voters. If all Precinct Leaders keep their data sheets with addresses, then we have a HUGE mailing list!
If we only do it 3 or 4 times a year, and do it well, and we each chip in to cover the costs of producing it and then each precinct leader sends it out to their own precincts, the shipping costs will be kept down.
Technically, it would be like sending junk mail, but only 3 or 4 times a year isn't bad.
It's much easier to get off the ground, and most people will at least look at it when it comes in the mail (can't guarantee that with TV).
This cannot be too difficult - back in the day people were always creating new fanzines. The only problem is that printing is more expensive now because there is less demand for it due to the internet.

just make a website, keep updated videos and info and then we all ban together to drive traffic.
The new digital cable systems have HUNDREDS of channels!
we recently got an HDTV, so we upgraded to HD cable and got hundreds of new channels - there is one just for art, one just for this sport or that sport - there are SO MANY channels that are so specific in nature. This new bandwidth is the way to go - within a few years EVERYONE will have it. That is why in 2009 ALL TV will be digital - analog will be totally gone - reserved for military and stuff.
I was thinking the same thing - good documentaries and historically accurate movies.
The News portion wouldn't be too difficult if we hook up with a media outlet with access to AP and Reuters - putting together your own news program is easy - not an all-day thing, just an evening program.
The key is working with an established media outlet because subscribing to AP and Reuters is EXPENSIVE!
Doing the news is easy - you write out your story, sit behind a desk with a nice background and then all you need is a cameraman. This is PERFECT for film school students!
I wonder if Mel Gibson would be interested backing in this :)
I was thinking about CBN - the Christian Broadcasting Network - I think they are only a news section on ABC Family though, not their own channel.
Doing a well-rounded channel with educational programming for kids during the day would make it appealing to parents - we can even create programs aimed at homeschoolers.
I'm thinking the Family Channel meets the History Channel (but only ACCURATE documentaries) meets news.
Oh yeah, it is not cheap to actually air movies and documentaries - even old ones cost a fortune. This will be a problem.
At my University the TV station was shut down for a few years after they got busted airing films without permission and were sued!
Now, the key is to find out how to get one of these new cable channels. That is what I do not know about.
I may be a vegetarian, but I'll defend to the death my right to eat pork!

I have said the same thing in the past.
I think in the long run this would be very effective getting out the truth. You went much further with the idea than I though. Maybe my only fear is that it would some how get bought out eventually by Murdoch or one of the other nice fellows and be turned against our message. I think its worth the try.

FSTV is a ultra left wing anti government channel. We need a ultra right wing anti government channel.
i don't wanna hold you back
i don't wanna hold you back from a good idea - i like it. but my only question is why would your average person, whom you're targeting, watch it? and if it wasn't included in something like basic or even extended cable (which big government would most likely have happen), why would people demand it? especially if they didn't even know about it?
like i said...it's a good idea so continue to pursue it however you can. but understand those are going to be key hurdles and challenges - more so than just getting the network up and running. if you have an answer - more power to you :-)

Write up a business plan
and search for investors. It's pretty basic.
Great idea but not just any investor...
Create a corporation (less than $100) and make the bylaws read that limited investers (grassroots) must be at least 51% of the stockholders. This will ensure no Murdock, Rockefeller, etc. will ever be able to buy us out. This unfortunately has happened too often in the natural foods and supplements industry. Small companies become very successful and well
known and before you realise it, the company sells out to some multinational corp. The name remains the same of course so the average customer is'nt even aware of what's happening.
