Do not panic, I only want to know because I saw that somewhere. It said Bush did not renew the federal ban. So whats the story?

Yes and no.
While the 1994 AWB did sunset in 2004, there are still some federal bans of various types in place, and there are state bans which mimic the same language of the 1994 AWB that still affect those states.
There are federal bans of some previously-imported types of "non-sporting" weapons which were banned from importation by GHWB during his presidency. There are import bans on many Chinese semi-automatic weapons.
If a Democrat gets in, you can be sure that will be coming back. And it may even be coming back with a candidate like McCain, who "seems" to give lip service to the 2nd Amendment, but would sell any conservative cause out in a NY second.
Anybody have
Anybody have Recommendations?
I was looking at buying AK-47 or SKS last weekend. Was told that many of the SKS's they can get in now are junk (depending on where they are manufactured). It sounds like an AK-47 would cost around $450 now. Is it worth spending that much on an AK-47 or is there a better semi-automatic rifle I should get for my money.

they're legal depending on
they're legal depending on what state you live in. check your local laws to be sure. i suggest doing this soon and making a purchase shortly after. once you get a weapon start stocking up on ammo. it doesn't matter how many guns you have if you don't have any ammo for them. might as well buy a baseball bat if you aren't going to stock up on bullets

Check city laws too
Some states allow cities to have more strict laws. San Francisco tried, and I think Chicago might.
Um
Also kind of a common-sense thing.. if you're going to start buying a gun or two, get a rifle and a handgun that use the same ammo... just my .02¢ devalued to whatever...

Depends on your purpose
A round big enough to have some serious stopping power in a rifle might be hard to handle in an easily-concealed sidearm.
I mean, a .22 rifle isn't going to stop anything larger than a raccoon, let alone an intruder.

Tell that to Robert Kennedy. And Sirhan Sirhan didn't even have a rifle, he had a .22 handgun.

I think I have learned more here than I did in school. Of course I went to school in Alabama so thats not saying much but still. I could just look this stuff up as I often do but the debate here provides much clearer understand of the issues.

Not true
A assult weapon is classified as a rifle with a flash suppresor, banet lug, fires from a high capacity magizine, and is semi-automatic, not selective fire. Selective fire is full auto with a semi-auto option.
That's for the sheep
That is what the government WANTS you to think an assault rifle is. Do the research. The term "assault rifle" has a very specific, CORRECT technical meaning and it isn't what Congress and the MSM says it is.
Is the Patriot Act an act of Patriots? Exactly. And the "Assault Weapon Ban" does not ban assualt weapons. It bans semi-automatic rifles, some of which resemble actual select fire assault weapons.
When the ATF kicks down your door, the gun they are aiming at you IS an assault weapon. The gun they are confiscating from you is not. Unless you are one of the few to have acquired a select fire weapon.
I figured the readers of this site would appreciate seeing yet another example of the media spin machine at work. Motto: "We never sleep as long as you have any liberty left".
nice
Nice to read someone who knows what they're talking about. But I think the answer the questioner is looking for is: Yes, the ban on certain cosmetically enhanced semi-automatic rifles was allowed to expire September, 2004.
Fully automatic weapons have been extremely tightly controlled since the National Firearms Act of 1934. And no automatic weapon manufactured since 1986 can be bought by anyone but government and law enforcement. The BATF will EAT YOUR LUNCH if they even THINK you own or have access to an automatic weapon. You would more quickly get away with murder, and less jail time too probably.
The so called "Assault weapons ban" only banned certain 'mean looking' weapons that operated just like every other legal semi-automatic weapon on the market. In other words, it was political bulls**t. But they'll do it again, mark my word.
PS: Acala, the information in this message was not for you, but for those reading the posts. You already know it.
Thanks!
I knew what he meant, but I thought I would take the opportunity to undo a bit of government spin.
not right now . booshhh let
not right now . booshhh let the ban sunset.. but it will be coming back I would buy what you want asap.. and don't forget ammo... LOTS of ammo!
I mean 1000's of rounds.. not a 100 or 200!!

Straight Talk About Assault Weapons
I will be buying my first gun this year, so I've started doing some research. I'm sure it was one of the RP sites (maybe this one, don't remember) that pointed out http://www.illinoiscarry.com/ to me. Go there and click on the link under Navigation called "Straight Talk About Assault Weapons". I found it extremely informative. It explains in detail how ridiculous the ban was to begin with.

Well . . .
An assault weapon is actually a select-fire short-barreled rifle firing an intermediate power cartrige from a high-capacity box magazine. These have been subject to federal permit requirements since the National Firearms Act of the 1930s. And the supply of them that can be owned by civilians was capped back in the late 80's. No new ones can be made or imported for civilian ownership. Sorry I don't have exact dates off the top of my head.
If by assault weapon you mean what the MSM and the congress critters erroneously call an assault weapon - any gun that looks ugly - then there is no longer a Federal ban on purchase or possession of one that was made in the USA. But, thanks to Bush I, it is illegal to import one or assemble one from foreign parts.
The foregoing only applies to Federal law. Your state law may vary.
full auto
Your thinking of a full automatic. This guy is asking about the previous Clinton
assult weapons ban
M1A .308
I have a Springfield M1A .308 cal. that was issued to the marines. Are you saying its not a assult rifle. It is a high cal. rifle, fires from a high capacity mag. Has a banet lug and flash suppresor. This rifle is considered a assult rifle under the previous ban.
not true
A assult weapon is classified as a rifle with a flash suppresor, banet lug, fires from a high capacity magizine, and is semi-automatic, not selective fire. Selective fire is full auto with a semi-auto option.
Actually
The phrase assault rifle comes from the Nazis and, as I said, it refers to a select-fire weapon firing a mid-range cartridge from a high capacity detachable box magazine. Look it up. It was designed to allow soldiers to lay down massive quantities of fire during a rapid advance. Thus, selectfire allowing automatic fire, medium power cartridge because it was designed for medium range and smaller cartridges are lighter so a soldier can carry more, and high capacity detachable box magazine so the soldier can fire more rounds before reloading and then reload more easily. Any rifle that does not meet these elements is not an assault rifle even though Congress says so.
Congress and the MSM have applied the label assault rife to semi-automatic rifles for a REASON (scare the sheep!). But it is technically not correct. Just because congress calls a gun a Saturday Night special, do you adopt their terminology? If the MSM calls a certain kind of cartirdge a "cop killer" does that make it one?
Be educated. Be correct. Semi-automatic rifles are NOT assault rifles.
An M14 "might" be considered an assault rifle because it is select fire and has a box magazine, but it is really too large and fires a full power cartridge. An M1A is certainly NOT an assault rifle because it is semi-auto only.
.
There is no federal ban, currently
Give it time though. Everyone keeps trying to say that the government learned a lesson that the assault weapons ban did nothing to make people safer. Dems say they learned a big lesson.
I have a different opinion. I think they learned that it will get them voted out of office. So they are just laying low for now until they get back in the white house.
If you want any such weapon, buy it now. Also buy ammo too. That will likely be what they go after soon as well.
Depends on the state
Some states (California) and territories (DC) have bans on so-called "assault" weapons that are stronger than the federal ban.
Check your state laws first.
Yeah the one time I was arrested
Was around the time that law passed. I had been to a gun and knife show earlier that day and had bought 2 big knives. I was 19 i think. Anyway the knives were in my trunk, in a bag with price stickers still on them. Long story short the judge threw it out.

No, there is no ban on "assault weapons"
The "Assault Weapons Ban", which was a provision within the Violent Crime Control and Law Enforcement Act of 1994, ended in September of 2004. In order to get the law passed, the Democrats were forced to put a "sunset" provision that basically put an end date on the ban, unless it was extended.
We can only begin to imagine how many drive-by bayonet attacks were prevented by that landmark piece of legislation (bayonets were one of the "banned" items, FYI).
Various states have since passed similar bans, but there is no federal restriction in place.
No idea
I'm a veteran with combat experience and a marksman's ribbon, so I've probably been diagnosed with PTSD under the new laws... I just go to gun shows... ;)
