CNN: Romney to Endorse McCain for GOP Nomination

0 votes

WASHINGTON (CNN) -- Former Republican presidential hopeful Mitt Romney plans to announce Thursday that he is backing Sen. John McCain in his bid for the Oval Office, two sources familiar with the decision said.

The former Massachusetts governor earlier this month suspended his campaign, saying it was in his party's best interest.

Continuing his campaign for the White House would "forestall the launch of a national campaign and be making it easier for Senator [Hillary] Clinton or [Barack] Obama to win."

does this mean

he cannot get back in the race later on

Romney supporters

There were some who came over here once he suspecnded his campaign - are they still around? I'd be interested to hear their take on this as they'll have more of a finger on the pulse of the former Romney supporters than we do.

Are you guys out there? Thoughts and musings?

delegates

People should be running for delegate positions in bot bound and unbound states and if they cant afford the trip then they should open a chipin once they are confirmed.

One for all and all for the constitution.

Romney didn't look to happy

Romney didn't look to happy endosing him.

romney's endorsement

Has romney's statement made it impossible for him to reenter the race. I didn't here it.

If Huck

takes a chance to drop out to do the hucklebuck and release his delegates, it'll be down to Ron and anti Ron.

Canvass. Let's win some, now.

The simple answer...

Romney is doing what is best for himself. With no chance of becoming president in 2008, he is setting himself up to become the GOP nomination in 2012. This strategy, of course, depends on McCain either losing the general election or winning and choosing not to run for a second term. The odds seem to be in Romney's favor.

A possible reason - The Iran Factor.

Romney's endorsement sounded contrived to me. I get the feeling he was forced into to giving the endorsement to give the public the perception of a cohesive GOP party for a specific reason.

My theory is this: Iran has had 4 cables cut, which leaves them somewhat isolated - communications wise. Bernanke is expected to drop the rate again very soon, which will plummet the value of the dollar and really piss of the oil producers, because the drop in the dollar means they will receive less for oil (petro-dollars). Iran will try to rally the other OPEC nations to drop the dollar as payment for oil. After all, Iran has already stopped taking the dollar and has been trying to convince the others to follow suit. We will bomb Iran for trying to do that. That is why we invaded Iraq both times. It was over Petrodollars - not terrorism. Thus the endorsement from Romney. He's being the good little GOPer, if he wants a future.

Little George is going to have his last hurrah and attack Iran - very soon.

ummm, I read somewhere....

...that it is now EIGHT cables??

Anyone have something up-to-date & reliable??

Holy crap!

How many are left??

They're supposedly setting up a sattelite link to get around the ~cable~ problems. They're supposed to go online this weekend.

Huckabee will still be the running mate.

Romney is NOT part of the CFR but he knows that fighting THEM is political suicide. He is caving, but he still does not have the backing of the TRUE establishment IMHO. It makes a brokered convention even less likely, however. We still should work on all of the Romney delegates and former Romney supporters anyway. There is far more than just this election at stake.

Answer: Can McCain Get Romneys Delegates

From NBC's Domenico Montanaro
Whether Romney's 282 delegates can be given to McCain depends on each state's rules on "releasing" delegates, per the RNC.

Language to watch for during Romney's endorsement is if he says he is "releasing" his delegates "to McCain." That, or some variation, may be enough in some states where he won BOUND delegates.

Caucus states' rules are less restrictive and several of these states' delegates are completely unbound and may be able to go to whomever they so choose.

Here are the primary state delegates Romney has won: Ark. (1), Calif. (6), Ga. (3), Ill. (3), Mass. (22), Mich. (23), N.H. (4), Tenn. (8) and Utah (36).

Caucus state delegates won: Alaska (12), Colo. (43), Iowa (7), Maine (18), Minn. (38), Mont. (25), Nev. (17), N.D. (8), Wyo. (8).

Of these, all of the primary delegates are pledged. But, of the caucuses, the following are not bound: Colorado, Iowa, Maine, Minnesota, Nevada and Wyoming.

*** UPDATE *** Highlighting how complicated this all can be, the Massachusetts Republican Party, said once Romney says his delegates can be released, then they are no longer bound to him, BUT they aren't sure if they would be legally bound to McCain -- if Romney so urges -- or if they can vote their conscience. They are checking.

*** UPDATE 2 *** For perspective, NBC News' Election Unit reminds us that in many states, the actual delegates -- the actual people who will sit at the convention and vote -- have not been elected yet. Even in a state where Romney won pledged delegates, unless they are actually elected already, the next phase could elect delegates who are McCain, Huckabee or uncommitted or something else. And in many states, it's not likely that a candidate who releases his delegates could "bind" them to another candidate.

I sincerely doubt...

that those 25 delegates in Montana (where Ron Paul was second) would actually get behind McCain. We will be working to make sure of that.

Agree 100%

We will fight against McCain getting our delegates. Montana loves Freedom and our Freedom leader Dr. Ron Paul! Cast your vote against @ http://gopteaparty.com

LOL YES

I love this guy, I wish more of you had his MONTANA spirit!

"We'll make sure of that" YEAH god bless people like you! :)

Does anyone know?

What Mitt's supporters are thinking or blogging? I can't imagine they are happy given the stark differences between Romney & McCain. It would ALMOST be like Ron Paul telling us he's quitting and now his delegates should vote for McCain. I wonder what they are thinking? Does anyone know where they blog?

I would guess

I Knew Romney Was a Fraud

This whole thing stinks. It reeks of collusion and behind-closed-door talks. Romney is in league with McCain, and probably has been from Day One. Somebody got to Romney, made him the proverbial offer he couldn't refuse. Now he's selling himself, and the country, down the river.

I sent an e-mail to Romney's camp telling them McCain was the worst thing that could happen to this country, and that he should back Ron Paul, the only candidate who knows what he's talking about. Obviously, Mitt's people didn't listen to me. :)

With each new revelation, I see how corrupt our government is. It's sickening.

Mitt is a typical guy who is just in it for himself. He spent 30 million of his own money so he can hold Mcsongbirds jockstrap.

LOL

ROFLMAO!!! nice one!! :)

Romney is saying F U America

I do not believe for a second that Romney's endorsement of McCain has anything to do with keeping the party together. Romney is bitter about all of his personal money that he spent on the campaign and that it did not result in his bid for president. Therefore, his endorsement of McCain is essentially telling Americans - Vote for McCain since you were too stupid to support me and reap your rewards. What sweet revenge for Romney.

HUCKABEE has the unmitigated GAUL....to

get ALL UPSETRomney's decision when the box is closing in around HIM, and about a "back-filled smokey room" where they are making decisions for US, when he has NO RESPECT, or ACKNOWLEDGEMENT for the ABUSES & MISTREATMENT of Dr. Ron Paul.....

SO, I have NOTHING for HUCKABEE.....what a sh----t, is all I can say!!

ROMNEY just ENDORSED McCAIN...sick!!

This is MAJOR SICK....his words are saying essentially that the MAJOR REASON Romney is endorsing McCain is primarily this "JIHADIST ISLAMO FASCIST" crap!!

Of course, secondarily it's KEEPING THE PARTY TOGETHER....

Brother, I think I want to PUKE....how in the heck are Romney supporters going to be able to support McCain....

Do they really FALL FOR THE ISLAMO-FASCIST crap???

Makes One Want to Ask Romney,

"why the hell did you force us to sit through all that pointless bickering between you and McCain at that phony debate???"

...seeing as how there's no significant difference after all...

That always gets me. Ron Paul is unique because he's not running based on his own desire to become President. If there were someone else running that had the same ideals, I'm sure he'd be happy to support them, and call on Americans to vote for whichever of the two they'd prefer! But all these other clowns are obviously only driven by their own selfish ambitions. This is proven when they drop out and then endorse one of their former competitors; they're all but admitting that all along their candidacy was a substantive redundancy of their newly-favored candidate!!

Ah, it's just as well. Let the neocons form into one big anti-Constitution coalition. The bigger they are...

I'd rather ask

Did you throw up in your mouth a little bit when you were making the endorsement?

Can We Get His Delegates

This is where it gets interesting. Imagine pulling 100 or more from him over for the convention.
Another reason Romney looks like a total fake.

this was hillarious and

this was hillarious and probally very true

On February 14th, 2008 LTBjorgaard says:
I'm betting the conversation went like this:

"Mitt, we know you really wanted it, sorry it didn't happen, but tell you what, we'll have Jim Bob billionaire give you back the 35 million you spent on the campaign if you endore McCain. Also, we will be more than happy to let you run again in 2012 after he loses."

Mitt is a fake conservative

His mouth is as big as cramer. 40M is gone for nothing... maybe a VP for exchange.
