Why can't we win in Iraq? And what are IEDs?
Submitted by sobrdup on Tue, 02/26/2008 - 11:47
I know that Ron Paul wants to bring our troops home from Iraq as soon as possible. However, in the meantime why can't we win a victory? How can it be that these unorganized terrorists have any chance against the worlds greatest military power? I have no military training so could anyone shed light on this?

The Semantics of Winning
The US Gov't is in their opinion is winning in Iraq as long it remains there. It will need to remain in Iraq for as long as the policy on the Federal Reserve with fiat currency remains. It is critical for the Dollar Hegemony to stay on top of the oil trading exchange. The US must maintain its hegemony over the rest of the world via this extortion racket. The ironic twist is for sure the Islamic's and their religious militants aren't going to put up with it for too much longer. When this will be... is sooner that later. I can now see why the US proaganda machine wants to drill it in to our heads that the ISlamofacists of the world are the bad guys when in fact the US Gov't with its ties to IMF and the World bank are the real FalseChristoFacists.
Several Reasons.
In Islam having infidels on the land will always bring terrorist attacks.
2) Winning has not been defined. IF winning is getting rid of Sadam and putting in govt then we have already won and the case for bringing the troops home is stronger.
Anyone who thinks you can "win" either in Iraq or Afghanistan simply does not understand Islam or our enemy. They think in terms of multi-generational wars. This current war has been going on for over 40 years.
How to win in Iraq! Simply Declare.... We have Won... and then come home with a parade. It is that simple. How to lose...easy... stay in Iraq.
A IED is a improvised explosive device. / roadside bomb.
How many US soldiers died in Iraq and Afghanistan this week? Do you know. How many Iraqi's were found dead this week?
Things are not at all peaceful it just isn't being reported.
Reverse the situation, if we
Reverse the situation, if we had been invaded, bombed, killed innocent men, women, children, the population at large would never surrender. So the only way to "win" is to kill every last innocent man women and child.
"Why can't we win in Iraq?"
We will never win, its not about us winnin', its about the corrupt people who started it and "they" are winning, their makin' money.
Money is not the root of all evil.
The love (greed) of money is the root of all evil.
A verse thats been corrupted by the media and the general public.
Timothy 6:10 (King James Version):
For the love of money is the root of all evil: which while some coveted after, they have erred from the faith, and pierced themselves through with many sorrows.
The war has nothing to do with winning
This war is a planned GENOCIDE against the muslim population. They are not going along with the globalists agenda. 90% of the iraqi deaths are civilians, many are women and children, that makes it a genocide. There is so much chaos because Israel and US are invading their countries to fight for the globalists. USrael has been chosen to carry out these genocides. Wake up. There is no noble cause.
Don't you know we are all connected? This hurts all of us. To think otherwise is to deny the truth.
Peace and light
Peace and light
The government and big buisness are winning.
They are getting more than they could have ever dreamed of. They have gained something greater than any oil well or dead dictator could have ever brought them. Knowledge. They have learned that they can do anything they want to do and no one including the American people will barely lift a finger to stop them. There is a lot of talk, but no real action. As a great man once said,(The founders would be ashamed at what we are putting up with.) Do you understand that we may be the last hope for freedom? The eyes of the world are upon us now to see if we chose freedom, fascism or if the Marxist socialist movement takes hold. This is a global revolution that we can not fail, for if we do we will never again know the sweet taste of freedom and our liberties will be lost forever. Rise up, march on Washington, but do not stop there. We fight this to the end, even if one day it means giving our lives for it
Freedom!
As with ALL conflicts...
dreamed up by the power elite, this one has many agendas. Not one of them is "freedom".
First and foremost, they want to keep Americans riled up against 'foreign enemies' while they drain our National resources. Not a single conflict since WWII has been waged in order to bring peace and freedom to any country, only to increase their stranglehold on power. The proof is in the results of these adventures. Has any good come from them? Of course not, not even accidentally.
Think about the hundreds of thousands of young, strong, motivated Americans who went around the world on these missions of folly, only to come back maimed, injured or worse, in body bags. Whole generations of potential for our Nation washed away in blood so that corporate fatcats can sit in their grand ball rooms and laugh at the foolish serfs that we have become.
I was in Marines,
and IED's are Improvised Explosive Device or devices. Can be set off from many things for example, pressure plates, cell phones, or the old string and pull technique. Our military is the best for being resourceful, but this war cannot be won because they keep changing our goals and gicing our military crappy missions that have no real outcome, just peace work and government build ups, something our military is not supposed to do, its supposed to be the construction worker and politicians, so guess who gets to do the dirty shitty work? That is why the military is turning away from the conventional ideas of this war will be fought for centuries but know it is all a bunch of crap that will only benefit the ones who wanted to go to war in the first place! There is no clear objectives right now, so everytime our military reaches there goal they create a new one for them so we could stay out there. From what I seen I think its so that the contractors and war profiteers can get there last cash ins. Because they make a lot of money and also they push for stupid shit like you don't support the troops if you don't support the war crap, I am a Vet and I don't support the war. Our government and president are liars and should be impeached.

This has and always will be a
no win war, because if you look closely at where all the billions of dollars are going to and those that have disappeared they are telling me that we are building the infrastructures of Halliburton and Blackwater, just look at there earnings increases since the invasion of Iraq and Afghanistan.
As the old saying goes, " FOLLOW THE MONEY AND YOU WILL GET YOUR ANSWER."
My fiancees son-in-law is over there and he has stated that all our troop's hands are tied from doing what they need to do to win, face it this is a war against our civil rights and pocketbooks.
"Freedom is a right that can never be won in war, only by each individual "
My opinion
Is that we have won twice. We won the war to get Saddam out and we won the war to squelch the insurgence. We keep having to fight because we attract all the anger there. If we would leave, they might get their country together. We have no business there. We never, ever intended to leave. Everyone said we don't want the US to occupy and we kept saying we would leave as soon as it was under control. They knew we were lying. They saw us building bases. We are building a beautiful American embassy and I've heard 4 to 14 bases at different times. I know 4 of them are along their/"our" pipeline.
Victory was never in the
Victory was never in the cards even though the reasons for the war were touted as such. Victory was unattainable from the beginning because the premise and blueprint for war was based on an ideology which was bankrupt from the get-go. The ideology of pre-emptive war doesn't take numerous things into consideration, especially when it is waged under the ideal of liberation when those who are invaded either don't see a need or realize there is such a need. Today, over 70% of Iraqis believe that our invasion and purpose behind it was wrong and, of course, we know the execution of the war was slip-shod, doomed to fail. You do not endear a people to you by invading their homes, even under the guise of liberation. The exportation of "democracy" has been tried since Wilson and has basically been a failure. The only war that usually succeeds is defensive in nature because people will stand in defense of their homes and way of life.
When the Neo-Cons took this country down this slippery slope they forgot the lessons of history and mistakenly thought that we would be viewed far differently then we really are in Iraq and, for that matter, Afghanistan. In the end, we will not accomplish any of the goals set out by the President, except for the removal of Saddam. Afghanistan, like Iraq, will ultimately slide backward into a much more volatile state.
Concerning terrorism, there can be no victory against such tactics...you must get to the root causes behind the tactic of terror in order to win that battle. If those core reasons are ignored then the terrorist need only continue with their tactics or just threaten such tactics to be effective. The terrorists need never actually attack this country again because they are at an advantage, the advantage that the mere threat of terror employs. This country with its businesses, government offices, colleges, schools, etc. can be effectively disrupted or completely shut down on mere threat. The actions of this country prove the point by the knee-jerk reactions it has taken, regardless of actual effectiveness, to the acts of terror.

except for the terrorists.
How many people have died over there? I hear one million now.
Of that, how many are terrorists?
Are there some numbers on this, how many official terrorists have been captured/killed ? To show people who support this "war on terror" , if the number of terrorists killed is worth all these lives. To shut that lady up on the view, whats her name lisa hasselholf, she has such a narrow view "kill terrorists, kill al qaeda" , she needs to step back and look at the big picture, as a matter of fact can someone dump her ass off over there so she can see first hand what our invasion has done to these peoples lives. I dont watch that show anymore by the way, the last time was just to see Ron Paul being interviewed.
What is an official terrorist? Al qaeda, militant insurgents, anyone against the US occupation and the government they set up.
Well, Al qaeda is happy, look at all the innocent lives lost for their cause.
well first i need somebody
well first i need somebody to explain exactly what "winning" in Iraq is. i spent 2005-2006 deployed to Baghdad. and i can't even come close to figuring out what winning is. and better yet. why haven't McCain, Obama, Clinton or Huck told us exactly what winning is.
if you haven't figured it out yet there is no "winning". it's because they don't want to set goals because if we reach them, which of course we never will, there would be an outcry to bring our troops home.
i mean look at the stories coming out of Iraq today. Turkey has invaded, Iraq wants them out, but they aren't leaving. yet Iraq is supposedly a sovereign nation. wasn't Kuwait a sovereign nation when Iraq invaded them? so why aren't we attacking Turkey and forcing them out of Iraq? it's because it's all bs. everything you're being told is bs. if you don't have on scuba gear you're probably drowning in bs at this point. most of us are aware Iraq's government is a sham. they have no say over what takes place in their country.
first we went there to get the WMD's. no WMD's so we had to fight Al Qaida. when i was there we kept getting told it was foreign fighters attacking us. it didn't take long before i realized that was a bunch of bs. first i asked our interpretors what they knew about Al Qaida. all of them claimed they'd never heard of Al Qaida. so i had them ask the Iraqi Police we dealt with. once again nobody knew who in the hell Al Qaida was. so then i had them ask the Iraqi Army. and again nothing. now i'll admit most of those guys wouldn't recognize themselves in a mirror. but dont' you find it curious that nobody had ever heard of Al Qaida? the didn't even know who Al Zarqawi was. and he supposedly was terrorist numero uno in Iraq at the time. so if you use simple addition the answer you'll get is bs.
ied is simply a fancy term for bomb.
also look out your window right now. do you see any cops? well imagine the police of your city having the entire population hate them. there's only so many of them and they can't be everywhere at once. so if you put some people in strategic positions it wouldn't be hard to plant a bomb while the other guys are 1/2 mile away looking out for the Americans. not too many Iraqis are driving around in tanks, bradleys, strykers or humvees. so it's every easy for them to know where we are at all times. this is why the world's most powerful military can't win. add that to the fact just like Nam we aren't allowed to win. of course i'm still not sure what winning is.
No matter who you vote for, the government always gets in - Bill Hicks

"well first i need somebody to explain exactly what "winning" in Iraq is."
Great point! Lets ask.
Mathew 5:9 Blessed are the peacemakers: for they shall be called the children of God.
That what you get
Without a declaration of war, submitted by congress!! Nothing is determined!! Or pre determined as you might call it. The reasons, the goals, intentions, time table. NOTHING!!!
Ron Paul states, "Terrorism
Ron Paul states, "Terrorism is a tactic, not an enemy. You can’t have a war against a tactic."
The object of the war, the tactic, can never be eradicated. This type of war will always be an endless, confusing tragedy.
Terrorism Is A Tactic
http://www.informationclearinghouse.info/article13607.htm
By Charley Reese
06/13/06 "Information Clearing House" -- -- Terrorism is a tactic, not an entity, and it is a tactic used by people who have a political grievance. Therefore, if you want to eliminate terrorism, you have to address the political problems that gave it birth.
President Bush has made no effort to do this. He has aggravated the situation and made it worse. He's created a virtual factory for terrorists.
I am a firm believer that what you sow you reap, and it is a bad business to sow hatred, but unfortunately it seems that our president has been seduced by the great power he commands. He thinks the military and the intelligence community can solve the problem of terrorism.
He should note carefully the situation with Israel. Since 1947, the Israelis have been trying to use force instead of diplomacy to solve the Palestinian problem. And what is that problem? The Zionists, encouraged by the British, planted a colonialist country in Palestine with no regard for the rights or wishes of the Palestinian people.
Just as the Jews used terrorism to drive the British out of Palestine, the Palestinians have been forced to resort to it, and for 59 years the Israelis have been trying to kill their way out of it. It hasn't worked. The Palestinians are still there. They kill, too. And, 100 years from now, the Palestinians will still be there, but it's not at all certain Israel will be. I tend to agree with a former head of Israeli military intelligence who said that if the Palestinians are not given their own state, Israel will be committing national suicide.
I think he's right. The Israelis have become so paranoid, they are walling themselves in and, of course, stealing more Palestinian land in the process. But the wall won't help. There are Palestinians inside the wall who hold Israeli citizenship. There are Palestinians in the West Bank, in Gaza, in East Jerusalem. There are also Palestinians in refugee camps inside the West Bank and in Lebanon, Syria and Jordan. So long as there is no justice for the Palestinians, there will be no peace in that region.
Thanks to a powerful Israeli lobby, our government, instead of pursuing our interests, has made itself an accessory to the crimes the Israelis commit against the Palestinians. Hence, we have become a target for terrorists, too. The president's statement that the terrorists "hate freedom" was just a cart full of cow pies. What they hate is our Middle East policy, and it is hardly a policy that has anything to do with freedom.
When the Palestinians held a free election and didn't elect the corrupt group of men we wanted, what did we do? We took our marbles and went home and pouted. We added to the misery of the Palestinians. We proved ourselves hypocrites, because a key element of democracy is to recognize the results of a free election. The president refuses to do that. For decades, we have denied the Palestinians the protection of international law by vetoing every United Nations resolution that sought to correct the wrongs committed by Israel. We have poured billions of dollars into Israel and made it a regional superpower complete with nuclear weapons.
In the meantime, we have invaded two Muslim nations, neither of which was at war or was a threat to us. It's taken the Taliban some time to get reorganized, but they've come back. We've lost 236 men in Afghanistan, and if we stay, we'll lose more. Anybody who thinks we can do what neither the British at the height of their power nor the Soviets could do is, I think, mistaken. Killing foreigners has been the national pastime in Afghanistan for centuries. The longer we stay, the more Afghans will turn against us.
We should pull out of the Middle East and adopt a fair and just attitude toward the Palestinians. Otherwise, we are risking disaster. All of America's allies in Egypt, Jordan, Saudi Arabia, Pakistan and Kuwait are one bullet away from a change of government. The tactical and strategic situation could change as quickly as an earthquake strikes. If Iran makes you nervous, how would you like to see an Islamist government in control of Pakistan, with its nuclear weapons and missiles? Or commanding the 70 million people in Egypt? We should get out now while, as they say in the South, the "getting is good." That's the only way you can win the so-called war on terrorism.
Mathew 5:9 Blessed are the peacemakers: for they shall be called the children of God.
For one thing
It's not really war, it is occupation. We entered this "war" without the approval of Congress,( a delclaration of war) but by UN directives. It is about oil as well as trying to force compliance to "democracy", UN/Bush style. I have read that the number of deaths for Iraqi's as well as our soldiers is under reported by most sources.
Iraq as well as Iran have threatened to not accept the dollar for their oil markets, and tried to convince all OPEC nations to follow suit. That is the end of the dollar. We can't have that now can we?
Middle Eastern countries, as well as China have been investing strongly in gold. HUMMM, go figure. We'd be wise to do the same IMO.
This whole" war" is just a continueance of Desert Storm in the 90's.
numbers
"I have read that the number of deaths for Iraqi's as well as our soldiers is under reported by most sources."
Of course it is...but the real horror is the numbers of WOUNDED. I'd like to see these figures released. It would dwarf the number of dead.
From an Army Officer
IED: Improvised Explosive Device. The are basically homemade bombs. They started with small amounts of explosives in pop can's and MRE bags that would injure/kill whoever picked it up or kicked it. As the war progressed and al Qaeda and Iran started showing up the bombs got bigger and more leathal. Now there are a few main types of IEDs. You have IEDs made from military explosives, usually artillery shells, EFPs or Explosively Formed Penetrators (google it), and fuel bombs which are propane/chlorine tanks detonated with a smaller explosive.
Winning In Iraq:
First the entire concept of winning in Iraq is undefined. In Iraq we face an insurgency. Counter-insurgency warfare is a policing action. To "win" in a counter-insurgency you must be able to maintain security and win the "hearts & minds" of the people. The goal is to get the masses to see your presence as a force of good and provide enough security that the people feel safe enough to "rat out" the insurgents.
There are a few problems that has face every counter-insurgency fight.
1. Use of Force. Any time soldiers are forced to use their weapons it risks collateral damage in the masses. Any injury to the masses affects greatly the "hearts & minds" fight.
2. Identification of Insurgents. To Americans it is hard to visually tell who is al Qaeda and impossible to tell who is an Iraqi insurgent. They all dress and look the same as the masses.
3. The perception of foreign occupation. If you are viewed as an occupying foreign power, (rather than a force interested in the protecting the Iraqi people) then there will be more than enough people willing to fight you. You must convince the people that you have no intent on staying/controlling their country/lives indefinately.
Militarily the insurgents aren't winning by any means. Up until the recent surge, the level of violence was so great that the insurgents were being successful at winning over the populace. Now with the surge the violence has decreased and we are being more successful at gaining the favor of the Iraqi people. What is not happening though, is a meaningful political reconciliation which would allow the US to turn control of security in Iraq over to the Iraqis and walk away. Sadly as well, is there is no intention in either party to completely remove troops from Iraq, even if/when a political reconcilation occurs.
It is long past time for the Iraqis to step up and take over and we should leave them to their own designs and self determination.
End of the day there probably is not any win-win situation in Iraq.
To Quote the Good Doctor: "the argument has been reduced to this: If we leave now Iraq will be left in a mess-implying the implausible that if we stay it won’t be"
Hope this long post helps!
What, so one million dead
What, so one million dead Iraqis hasn't won their "hearts and minds"?
Great summary !
Winning their hearts and minds is the ultimate goal I would believe. I only wish it were simple. We need the Iraqi's to believe us, but McCain is ruinning everything with his 100 year statement. McCain is the worst Republican choice America could ever, ever make.

We have already won in some regards, i.e., the hearts and minds of weak-minded fools that feel comfortable sitting on their couch in front of their television set who safely direct the war on a daily basis -- they don't have to go and fight and die for an unjust cause, a lie. And when JOHN MCCAIN (and some others -- GWB comes to mind) says we need to stay and fight until we win, those same folks that will rush to the voting booth and put a big CHECK MARK by the name of MCCAIN contribute to that win. As twisted in logic as that may sound to you.
Now if you're talking about why there are still people left to fight over there in Iraq -- we've been steadily working on fixing that. It was reported in October 2006 that nearly ONE MILLION Iraqi had been killed (died) as either a direct or indirect result of our attacking that nation.
http://www.cnn.com/2006/WORLD/meast/10/11/iraq.deaths/
This is an absolute travesty -- a crime against humanity, certainly a crime against the Iraqi people.
I'm not sure what the total population might be yet today in Iraq but it seems to me that there has been considerable effort to win one way or another. I suppose we might drop a few of those 10,000 nuclear bombs we have yet on our shelves in reserve -- the Iraqi and/or the al-Qaeda certainly don't have that to use against us // I suppose that might be considered by some to be a win. But, seriously, not by me. None of this mess has been a win-type scenario since day one.
That's why we're still over there, that's why they're reports pretty much daily about mass killings over there. It's because we screwed up big time in doing what we've done (turning that nation into a war zone) and the only solution we seem to have now is to leave the mess behind us and pretend it didn't happen. The ones that would surely be winners in that regard are the ones that would have otherwise been killed the longer we stay in this mess.
A political solution for peace is still missing in this picture, that's the only way to truly win. This war became a can of worms without a lid -- if you can understand my meaning saying that. We need a lid and that would be the political solution that bombs just can't give.
My thoughts.

To begin with...
It is not a war. This is a regional conflict, an oil struggle, a racket. You cannot win here because there is no army to defeat. Matter of fact our service men and women can't even identify the enemy until they are being fired upon. It is unfair to our troops and I believe our presense there has only destablized the region further. If you think we're in Iraq fighting "the terrorists" you are sorely mistaken. We are fighting anyone that opposes our presence there. In an effort to preemitively destroy our enemy we have only increased their numbers and their devotion.
The news said that these
The news said that these so-called improvised explosive devices were the main worry of our military. Does this mean that simple citizens can be effective against a military power with "backyard bombs"?!?
ARGH
What makes you think that these attacks are made with IED's in the first place? Because the MSM said so? For all we know, our troops are being killed with the same weapons that we gave the Iraqi freedom fighters years ago to fight the Russians, the same weapons that end up missing, stolen from current munitions stockpiles (the Pentagon is notorious for not being able to track it's own inventory). Landmines, RPG's, automatic weapons, etc "fall off trucks" all the time. If we didn't supply them with the weapons, the war would end. They have no organized military. We need to fund both sides to perpetuate the conflct, as it is the most financially beneficial position to take. By reporting that these are "crude, homemade devices" it further plays on the fears that these "terrorists" will come to your home town, raid the local WalMart for bomb-making supplies and blow up your local movie theatre. Trust nothing the MSM tells you, even the 'good' news...if you must watch, treat it as infotainment, or at the very least an observational experiment, so that you can learn their patterns and methods. The information itself is suspect. If CNN reported that Ron Paul actually WON a primary, I would question it, and their motives behind it.
“The more you can increase fear of drugs and crime, welfare mothers, immigrants and aliens, the more you control all the people.”
Noam Chomsky
IED = homemade bomb
It's newspeak for a homemade bomb.
If they are made by military contractors they are called bombs or mines, if they are unofficial they are IED's.
Simple answers are best,
We can't win because the leadership isn't allowing it. Study the rules of engagement in Vietnam for a history lesson in why. FWIW...our troops don't belong there anyway.
As for I.E.D.'s that's an acronym for Improvised Explosive Device. Think backyard bomb...that is if backyard bombs were routinely made with military grade explosives.
WIN WHAT?There is no
WIN WHAT?
There is no possible way to win a war against a tactic called terrorism.
War is also very profitable for a select group of people and is not in thier best interest to end any war we are in.
The only way to win against people willing to kill themselves is to kill them all AND THAT IS NOT POSSIBLE.
We invaded thier country and are trying to force our ways on the Iraqi people. Ron paul has said this best : WHAT IF CHINA INVADED OUR COUNTRY TRYING TO FORCE THIER WILL ON US? Would you submit and become a slave to another country or would you fight for you and your family at all costs?
We have no right to be there PERIOD.
This entire war is about securing Oil and has nothing to do with installing freedom in IRAQ. This we need to win crap is a lie and you need to look beyond the lies you are being told. Why is the Government bankrupting the USA to continue a war in Iraq that we can not win? OIL.
Why are we being taxed into the black hole and our soldiers dying to fight a war in Iraq? Oh i forgot it is to fight the terrorists before they come the to the USA. REALLY? How do you protect America when our borders are wide open? Please open your mind and you will inderstand what i am saying is true.
Oh wait : The Iraqi Government says they need us to stay : WHY DON'T THEY PAY US TO STAY THEN? No we are paying to blow up thier country and we pay again to rebuild thier country.
Start thinking for yourselves people.
