LA 1st District - David Simpson: The Fruits of Ron Paul’s Candidacy

By John M. Schroder

Here in Louisiana’s 1st Congressional District, it’s campaign season. With our former Representative Bobby Jindal now residing in the Governor’s mansion, voters now must choose his replacement. It’s widely felt that the winner of the Republican primary on March 8th will easily carry the general election. With a host of civic forums and debates having already taken place, it has become very apparent that this primary election is basically three men of questionably “conservative” credentials and one man, David Simpson, whose constitutionalist convictions have been labeled as “radical” by the region’s main local newspaper. Perhaps only in 21st century America could strict adherence to the documents of a nation’s founding fathers be seen as radical.

To the supporters of Dr. Ron Paul, this certainly sounds all too familiar. The current state of presidential politics implies that the American people are either clamoring for more war, or begging for higher taxes. While the Democratic Party is unable to find a social program it is not willing to fund, the Republicans seem to have an insatiable appetite for global warmongering. While the leaders of both parties see themselves as diametrically opposed to one another, they are simply two sides of the same coin. Just as Ron Paul has stood staunchly opposed to the ever expanding federal government, so too is David Simpson taking up the mantel for limited government and personal liberties.

There are perhaps two real road blocks in David’s race for the District’s seat. The first: explaining to voters that bankruptcy due to funding for the National Endowment for the Arts as the same as bankruptcy for funding war in Iraq. While the former only seems to support bad art, it’s more difficult to discern what is supported by pouring money into Iraq. David’s 15 years as an Army officer has helped in convincing voters that he’s no Jane Fonda flower child, and his message of keeping tax dollars at home has resonated with voters as well.

The second hurdle is the “sameness” of the other three candidates. They almost give credence to the New Orleans Time Picayune’s column in which David’s approach to government was labeled “radical.” One candidate speaks of how he will go to Washington and “fix FEMA.” Another speaks of the federal economic stimulus package as “a good piece of legislation.” Another expounds on his plan to fight crime by federalizing local crime fighters. In short, the other three candidates all represent the very same type of politician that has gotten our country into the predicament it is currently in. Only David Simpson offers an approach that gives us all a chance at taking our country back.

While David’s run for Congress can be seen as merely a local issue, Ron Paul has taught us differently. Only by having like-minded representatives flooding into Washington, can we truly stem the tide of all that has occurred over the past several decades. Whether from Louisiana, Oregon, or Iowa, all those who love liberty can take a stand against those who would destroy it. You can take a stand by supporting those who you know will ultimately support you.

David Simpson for Congress

He needs everyone who can support him to support him! I voted for him already. He is a wonderful candidate, and you should see him for yourself. His calendar is posted on his web site www.davidsimpsonforcongress.com
He appreciates all his supporters....let's get him elected.

just say no to politicians...

David is the only non-politician running on the Republican side. This is a great opportunity to get a Ron Paul Republican elected because it is a special election. He doesn't have to beat an incumbent and the turnout is expected to be very low. If enough of us can show up to vote and bring enough people with us we at least have a chance to get into a runoff. March 8th is fast approaching so anything you can do to help please do so.

Title change suggestion

You might want to change it to 'fruits of labor' of the Ron Paul campaign.

This guy might not like being called a Fruit.

Adaptation of Powervotenow

Reading the general philosophy of the Powervotenow system got me to thinking. I have in my mind a modified version of the system that might be more doable on a local scale.

The assumptions for such a system working are that a large enough group of people and a large enough amount funds could be gathered to impact the political sphere. Furthermore, the funds would still have to be donated by individuals, under the direction of a trustworthy entity.

What we have now all over the country are a number of meetups. I propose that, on a state level, many (hopefully all) members of the meetups would join up with a state-level non-profit organization (PAC) whose sole purpose is to hold funds that individuals donate for the sole purpose of collecting a safe return (think CD), to then be returned (with interest) and whose principle would be subsequently donated to the candidates as directed by the PAC.

The entire system would have to be non-binding and voluntary, and it would also require numbers, and an honest committment among its members to donate this money as directed.

The specifics would be as so (technicalities are discussion points):

1. The state-level organization would come up with a SIMPLE, straightforward conservative platform that any "republican" politician should be able to adhere to. There has been too much damage and wandering from the path to undo it at once. That is why I think 2-4 platform issues that any republican worth his/her salt could support and that most Americans would also agree with just from common sense. Such a platform might be (1)NEVER vote for a bill that increases the federal budget, (2)NEVER support military action without a formal declaration of war, (3)NEVER vote for a bill that raises taxes. Yes, there are other important issues (Fed, foreign policy, civil liberties), but the platform is not static and could change to reflect priority adjustments. Plus, this really needs broad support to take off initially, so certain admirable platform issues might have to be tabled until the organization(s) are functioning and stable.

2. Membership in the organization implies a total commitment to the platform and the explicit knowledge that the organization exists to coalesce funds supporting legislators who best follow the platform.

3. Somebody/some group (a member of organization, a trusted legislator, a consensus by members) determines the rankings of state legislators vis a vis the platform.

4. An arbitrary top number of legislators are chosen to receive (proportionally) from the promised donations according to their platform support (e.g. the group agrees to give the top 10 legislators in the state--this would of course be dependent on size of state--the donations) for a primary/general election. If no legislators meet the criteria, the money is held over until the next available election.

6. At donation time, as agreed, the money is returned to individuals who are free to donate as much money as they want to whom they want. The expectation is, however, that they would donate their deposited amount to one of the chosen legislators. The easiest way is to have the organization send out communications to individuals as to who they should donate to, and how much. This way, the donations could be efficiently done (rather than having each person donate 10 times in varying amounts).

That's about it. Like I said, this would require numbers, honesty, and some time, but could, as an addition to delegate gathering, be a forceful tool towards influencing policy over people in government. The ultimate goal would be to unite the state organizations eventually--or maybe not. Keeping it at the state level might be just fine, as long as the platform is straightforward

I will vote for him

I live here in the 1st district, and will be voting for Mr. Simpson. However, all I see around town are Steve Scalise signs. Also, the local media, in true MSM fashion, seems to treat him as if he were Dr. Paul.

We have to donate, even if it is our last $5.00, if we want to

make a difference. Afterall the alternative is not donating and eventually not having a free country anymore. I just sent $25.00. I know we are all hurting financially. I have given out about $3000.00 in the past two months while still driving my 1994 oldsmobile delta 88. I could have bought a nicer car with that money, but I say screw it. I have had enough of these politicians bullshit, and I will spend as much as I have to, to get some legitimate people in office. This is the only way we can do this people, please donate as much as you can, or offer this man some freetime if you live in Louisianna to canvass or make phone calls, or whatever. This is a Revolution right?

Those who expect to reap the blessings of freedom must. like men, undergo the fatigue of supporting it.-Thomas Paine

The R3volution requires action, not observation!!!!

That is what I am talking about,

sacrifice, for the greater good. I feel you. I have been poor all my life. I have never donated to any campaign, until Dr. Paul. Not only do I continue to donate to both his campaigns, but I also donate to these other like minded candidates as well.

Life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness.

I hope Mr. Simpson

can pull this one off. If so, it will make the election in November that much easier for him.

(this is a special election to fill Jindal's seat. It will be up for re-election in November along with everyone else)
