Everybody here needs to get a copy of the book "An Enemy of the State" by F. Paul Wilson and do what it says in the Robin Hood Reader. Things aren't bad... yet. I dare not speak more plainly but remember - the very forces that make SAVING money dangerous now can be made to work to your benefit. A prosperous citizen has a MUCH greater effect on government than a poor one. Do your homework and read between the lines people. The doodoo is going to be hitting the fan probably this summer, maybe earlier due to CDOs unwinding. Do yourselves this favor, and feel free to spread the message - but please don't explain any further so we can't be prevented.

Really when depression hits you lose all of it. It's right around the corner. Did you see wallstreet today ? The Banks cannot honor your money it's simple. Read about the 1930's same story new decade. People lost everything! I moved all my money to Canadian banks for now.
US isn't worth as much but scotia bank is almost at par. I like the bank of montreal too.

Call me stupid but I really don't believe the economy or the dollar is going to tank. I have heard this same "song" for years. It seems to me that ever since the great depression, people have been predicting another/next one.

it appears that seeing it from a distance the picture is clearer than when you are right in the middle of it.
Yes, those of us who are older have heard the doom and gloom on
the dollar for years. I recall being a college student in the 70s and every time I went to buy shampoo or something, the price was higher, so I decided to stock up on things.
But if you study the concept of a fiat currency and the fractional reserve system, where money is invented out of thin air and inflated,
and if you study the history of money all over the world, you will realize it is only a matter of time before the dollar collapses. This seems to me to be THE time because of many things:
1) Bush's expensive war creating billions of dollars out of thin air every week
2) housing bubble collapse creating loss of faith in US economy
3) a competitive reserve currency: the Euro
4) America not producing anything that people can buy, hence huge trade deficit, and even outsourcing service work now (ex: customer service phone operators now in India)
5) gold shooting through the roof indicating loss of faith in fiat currencies
Can anyone add to this list? I am 52 and have NEVER seen a time like THIS before!!!

Gloom and doom has been predicted for decades!! I think it sells a lot of preparedness equipment, books, silver, gold and weapons. That's it. I don't care if anyone agrees with me or not. It's my opinion after years and years of hearing the same forecasts of gloom and doom. The thing I think is in danger of happening is the end of the United States VERY soon.

Forecasts vs. foreclosures
What is your idea of the difference between "forecasts" vs. the actuality of how many millions of people have lost/will be losing their homes? Or the appalling 17.9% decrease in *February* for CA home values (per tonight's DP thread)?
Or the banks that are on the edge of the abyss because people can no longer pay their mortgages *or* their credit card payments (does anyone remember last fall that the minimum went from 5% to 10%, I think, meaning what was a $300/month payment became a $600/month payment?)
College for your kids? Retirement? Forget it.
I have exactly ZERO sympathy for the morons
who are losing their homes. Or the financial institutions who made the loans. Let the borrowers and the lenders go under. No bail outs. The bail outs are wrong wrong wrong. It's time for personal responsibility!

A depression does not end the US
It will clean the markets out. It will be rough like in the early days.
We will either return to liberty and freemarkets and back to the gold standard or to more socilism (a la FDR), globalism and governmemt control.
The Constitution and the resolve of the American people can withsdtand an economic collapse.
We must never compromise on the principles of liberty and freedom.
It would change but it would not be impossible.
To assume that we will
To assume that we will return to a free market system and return to the gold standard would be to assume that our current economic system is an accident. When, in fact, those in position of power have known of this impending disaster, and have outright encouraged it. They have their plan laid out in excruciating detail, be assured.
Our hope lies in spreading the truth and changing the tide before it's too late.
A depression is not the end of the US. It will come before
that. Any of the 3 anointed will continue the give away of our nation.
