Experimental Paulian Towns and Communities
The thought has been on my mind for several weeks that we who follow Ron Paul's message of Constitutional government, laissez-faire economics, and non-intrusive government need to form our own experimental towns and communities.
I was once involved in the Free State Project and I felt that movement--while well-intentioned--essentially failed because it wasn't specific or focused enough, and aiming to reform an entire state is a much more massive undertaking than founding a small city and building it from scratch.
I read with interest about "Paulville.org" today, and I have posted about forming a self-sufficient Paulian community in north central Texas. I am currently a landowner in an unincorporated area fronting a state highway, building a renaissance faire on 100+ acres of land.
I believe not only that building a conservative/libertarian community with Ron Paul fans is feasible there, but a thriving small-town and tourist economy could be developed as well.
Other Texans or interested parties, what do you think?

I am willing to guess.
I am willing to guess that when the town was at its pinnacle the Fed would raid it and start charging people with non-crimes.

Anyone think of maybe a town in that county in Iowa that Ron Paul won? I forget which county it was but he won it, hell it sounds there is a lot of like minded people.

However, might I suggest you all pick up a copy of Harry Brownes book, How I found freedom in an unfree world".
I personally lived in Vietnam AND Thailand. I found levels of freedom even under the most repressive regimes that are non-existent in the US. There are more of those zones in the US albeit different.
Pick a place you like and build your life around the drawbacks while focusing on the positive.

I rather like it here, but would consider a move in the right circumstances.

Tempe Arizona is the ripe for us!
Giant University ASU with Google now on Campus
Plenty of Jobs, Intel, Motorola, entrepreneur friendly, etc.
low cost of living (a typical 3/2 1500 sq ft house rents for $1,100 month, a typical 2/2 apartment $750) ,
8 months of mild winters and spring-like tempuratures,
Kool down town night life,
4 hot summer months but days at the lakes are not bad either!
4 hour drive to the Ocean (South), 4 hour drive to Snowy Mountains (North),
No Floods, earthquakes, or Tornadoes or Hurricanes or humidity.
Has Right to Carry laws,
Most of all, the City Government is ripe -- leaning against Iraq war, against Real ID, for lower taxes, pro legal immigration, private schools and charter schools, tried to legalized med marijuana like CA, likes the 15% flat income tax (Steve Forbes won here once upon a time).
One negative: State Income Tax 7% or so....

I'll stand and fight
right here where I'm already living/voting. Not in a city, just an unincorporated area of a rural county. Plenty of like-minded neighbors that I've known for many years.
Here's another option for those that ARE interested in forming some sort of RPville: All across my part of Texas, there are itty-bitty farm towns(literally just a couple hundred people, some with fewer than that) that are basically dying. Those communities are already set up as "towns" so you wouldn't have to start a new one. Literally, move like about 100 RPers into the area and you'll have an instant majority. If that town happens to be in one of the more rural counties.....Your group can probably just spread out a little and take over the entire county's political machine.
Just a thought......
Let me know where y'all settle and I'll be sure to visit!

Taking over a county is the right direction, And electing a County sheriff that will protect the citizens from unlawful federal and state agents like the IRS and the BLM heck you could even do away with drivers licenses, attract business by the stopping the IRS etc. etc.
The County Sheriff is the highest Law Enforcement officer in the country federal and state Law enforcement agencies have no jurisdiction over him or the county that's how it was meant to be so that the power stayed local and and accountable to local voters

In SE Washington wheat growing country, and buying a home or renting would be cheap! One town I drove through had a vacated public school made into a Christian school. Lots of vacant buildings and homes.
Very interesting discussion...
I love all the links and discussion. It's helping us learn alot. My family and I are moving to escape the nazi state of Cali. Despite the fight waged against RealID, it's our feeling that Cali is quickly becoming over-run with statists and the like. Arnold is about to start spraying a cocktail over the SF Bay Area called 'checkmate'. They already sprayed Santa Cruz and Monterey, causing all kinds of health problems. We first considered http://FreeStateProject.com but I think NH is too far. We are now considering Montana. We will be leaving Cali no matter what within 2 weeks, so I will be watching and learning as much as possible. Anyone else out there with a similar story?

Lots to chew on.
Lots to chew on here.
1.) I signed up for the FSP before I realized that there are some real, hardcore libertarians up there in NH. The borderline Anarchist view turned me off. I love NH, but don't want to be associated with 50 Cal. Toting, barracade yourself behind cement walls, and fight anyone off who doesn't agree with their view of complete and total freedom.
2.) Wyoming is VERY DOABLE... Wyoming also encourages people to move to their state since its starting to expand, and they desperately need people to work the jobs. I've thought about Wyoming myself a couple times, and its still not completely out of my mind.
3.) Pennsylvania has been on my mind as of late as well. Its only one of two Commonwealths left in the United States. Theres PLENTY of land available, cost of living is cheap, and they have a pretty limited government. Not perfect by all means, but deffinately %1,000 better than the corrupt state of New Jersey, where I am currently held hostage now.

It will be just like Jersey
after our current governor gets done. between the state run gambling, the Comcast and other sweetheart deals, the elimination of a number of healthcare providers, and changing I - 80 into a privately operated Toll road, things are not looking that good.
We do seem to be mounting a pretty good effort against real ID though, and the constitution includes a right to self defense. The conservative T in the middle of the state is your best bet.
PA's coming around thanks to Ron Paul
I never knew so many like minded people occupied this state of mine.

thoughts are being shared through the ether somehow
I was thinking the same thing this morning...while driving...
We (and our ancestors) have allowed our lives and our children's lives to be organized by others in so many ways, and now we find our lives so controlled it is risky even to speak out of turn. I find I am way too careful in expressing my views to colleagues. I don't even remember when that started.
As I look for my perfect mountain hideaway I am thinking "who in this town is libertarian". I may have found a good place to start...

New Hampshire is the Best Choice
This idea really isn't new, and since I'm lucky enough to live in NH, let me say that the FSP is making a difference. I'm a native and was here before the Free Staters started coming.
The FSP still needs 12K signers before the whole 20K are obligated to move. By the end of this year we will have at least 1000 movers in state as part of the First 1000 project. Free Staters have already been elected to the state legislature, helped defend home schooling, gotten a marijuana decrim bill passed in the house for the first time ever, launched important liberty focused media, helped Dr. Paul get his best primary showing to date, and much more. That's with just a few hundred movers.
You can always make a "Free Town" in NH, plus simply making one community in a largly statist state, is likely not going to go to well.
The FSP just introduced flexible triggers. When will you be willing to move for liberty? When Clinton is elected? When we have socialist medicine foisted upon us? When they start seizing firearms? When tobbacco is outlawed in your state? When your state implements Real ID? Signing up and moving now is the best way to prevent these things from happening to you and your family.
You won't be alone. People have moved and are ACTIVE. I really think this is the best shot at liberty in our lifetime. go to www.freestateproject.org at least check it out, and think about signing up. Its not for everybody, but you owe it to yourself to consider this option.
Great Spiel
However he already said he tried the FSP. I love the FSP myself I'm a signer myself. But that doesn't diminish what he is talking about.
Small individual towns can have a large impact, and if run right, can give you your liberty now; not down the road. The greatest Liberty in the least amount of Time.
I see that as a good thing. Mix in Free State Wyoming and a plethora of other "free" projects, and we have ourselves freedom sprouting up everywhere and converging to a much larger free area than if only started in one area. After all, what happens when FSP succeeds? We'll have one free state to encourage others to free themselves and embolden other people to choose the same path in other areas. Why not start now in those other areas?
Freedom all over!
I agree. I too am a Free State Project member and while I think that the momentum and the basics are best in New Hampshire, I encourage FS Wyoming or anywhere else! Go for it! Spread liberty.

Just get 800,000 Paul supporters to move to Wyoming where the population is about 500,000. Instant majority.
The problem with Wyoming, in
The problem with Wyoming, in my opinion, is jobs.
The Molon Labe Free State movement headed by writer Boston T. Party focuses on Wyoming, and while I think they have some excellent ideas, it's going to be hard to move thousands of people to a state where the job opportunities are extremely low for anyone outside the energy industry.
There are several beautiful sparsely populated states with deserts and mountains in the American West that are sparsely populated for a logical reason. In the case of Wyoming, there's very little economy there, there's very little arable land there, and the winter weather there is just beastly---so it won't attract retirees or refugee Californians the way, oh, Arizona and Idaho do. If there's little active job market for young people, retirees will find it unattractive, and it's hard to farm and ranch, who will make a living there..?
I think a better western "free state" would be Montana, which doesn't share many of Wyoming's problems.
