Contact your County's chairman and request to be a delegate or alternate at the RNC for McCain. Stealth is the name of the game in California.

WHY do you bring this up now - is there a deadline - when is it?

(I'm asking to find out, not criticize )

What prompted you to raise this right now ?
If there's something going on - please let us know.

I know a few people who I could convince to become delegates.

However, it was my understanding this wasn't going to take place for several months, in our backwards state.

Here is a link to get you started....

Find your nearest committee and take action. The things the party organizations are looking for in order for you to become a national delegate are:
"What have you done for the state GOP?"
"How long have you worked for republican causes and candidates?"
"What campaigns have you worked for?"
"How long have you been registered GOP?"
"How can you best represent our state at the national convention?"
"How will sending you to National be beneficial to our state party organization and building the party?"

Good luck,

You NEED to do this in person, NOT by email!

Do not try to become a local delegate over the internet; go in person to get and file your forms.

This sort of stuff has to happen in person. Not all of these old time GOPers are as technosavvy as you. Many of them may never even check their email or they may not have any staff to respond to email.

Always do this stuff in person. Always. Meet people. Get to know them. They are not interested in outsiders. Become an insider by getting to know your county GOP people. As much as many Basement Warriors might not like it, this fight has to come up to ground level from time to time. Get some sunshine, go to your local or county GOP office, explain that you are a lifelong GOPer who wants to get more involved in local party politics, and go from there.
Good Luck!

Stealth, huh?

Lotsa luck with that. Maybe you ought to take this offline.

Inverted Dates?

As an FYI, here is a link from the CA GOP, which lists their calendar of upcoming events:

http://www.cagop.org/events/

This puzzles me, though: on that page of events, it lists this --

CA Republican Party Convention:
Friday, September 26, 2008, through Sunday, September 28, 2008

However, the Republican National Convention in St. Paul is Sept. 1 - 4, 2008 (per http://www.gopconvention.com) -- clearly, taking place weeks before the state convention.

Huh? The CA state Rep. convention takes place after the nat'l Rep. convention? So, becoming a delegate to the CA state convention...works for us in the National convention...how, exactly?

Hopefully, I'm missing something obvious, and becoming a state delegate for CA still makes sense. Anyone who can explain this, please step forward to the microphone. Thank you, and I apologize if I appear dumber than dirt.

And, once that's cleared up: anyone who can get the CA Rep. party to answer their phones and return calls, please let us know what you did! My local county's Rep. office does not have their address listed on the GOP page (so I can't just trot on down to their office!), and calls get intercepted by an answering machine...I'm beginning to wonder whether there is an actual staffed office in my (quite large) county. I next called the local GOP one county over, and got a phone that went unanswered...I let it ring 20 times...sheesh; why don't they just play a recording that says, "We have enough people, thanks; go ahead and call the Dems instead..."

There are some states

for which National Delegates have already been selected, and for whom the candidates played no role in their selection.

National Delegates were elected in some states last year at state convention, and then whomever those delegates may be just vote however they want, or however their primary went, or whatever the local rules may be. I do not remember which states those are. Maybe CA is one of them.

The thing to know and remember is that the role of a National delegate is usually not one sought after by adherents of a particular candidate. It is usually a symbolic reward given to long-time active members of a state's GOP party machine.

These guys and gals have no extreme loyalty to candidates, but to the party itself, and as such they go to the conventions as a reward for their service and just vote for whomever the expected nominee is.

This is the first race in recent history where adherents to particular candidates, especially Huck and Paul, are so interested in actually contesting these national delegate election contests and getting to go to National on behalf of their candidates. Keep this in mind as you try to navigate the process.

The things the party organizations are looking for in order for you to become a national delegate are:
"what have you done for the state GOP?"
"how long have you worked for republican causes and candidates?"
"what campaigns have you worked for?"
"how long have you been registered GOP?"

"How will sending you to National be beneficial to our state party organization and building the party?"

You should be willing to be a DELEGATE AND/OR ALTERNATE

I do not know the rules in California, but if their rules say that an alternate is moved in if the delegate fails to vote as pledged, then we would want our people to be those alternates, too.

It's really simple to become a delegate, and then just keep making it from one step to the next, until we are the majority of those on the floor in Saint Paul. Also, network with other local RP delegates so you all know who each other are. Wear a McCain badge, but have it be DIFFERENT than the McCain badge everyone else is wearing. In other words, if the official McCain campaign sells a brown badge, buy a bunch of unofficial green McCain badges, or use some other symbol known only to stealth delegates to signal each others' true allegiances.

You can pledge that you will vote for McCain, but if there is no punishment (legally, like jail or something) for not abiding your pledge, all you have to do is say, in the end, that you became convinced to vote for Ron Paul while at the convention, and you felt that it would be morally improper to not vote your conscience. There is nothing immoral in that. Pledge for McCain, go there fully intending to vote McCain, but let your common sense get the best of you at the last minute.

Nice

I like your style alaskaron

Onward to the National Convention we go

Thank you

We should uphold virtue and morality, but also be willing to be as wise as serpents and play the game according to their rules, while using them to our benefit. Also, get real knowledgeable about Robert's Rules of Order. Robert's Rules are power if you know them. Using them in these conventions can get us far, and not knowing them can allow the others who DO know them to shut us down quickly.

and show up to the next meeting....

You might be able get more information in person when they think you are a McCain supporter.

Good luck,

Good Idea

I was planning on not making my support for RP apparent and I think this is good advice for anyone anywhere. I would also say that you should dress the part as well. Walking in in a t-shirt and showing off your tattoos is probably going to raise some eyebrows.

Agreed, I have my McCain lapel pins ready....

Go to the office and get the paperwork.

Don't expect them to make it easy.

Don't wait for them

RNC is rather slow. I know in Florida it is where I am. I believe I am in the same predicament as you(bound delegates). It would probably be best to go in person

I have tried.

Hi, I have tried contacting my county's chairman, but they have not yet responded to me. I am about ready to walk into their office. Has anyone in CA had any luck becoming a delegate or alt.?

Do not try to conduct business over the internet

I emailed them for information.

I got no response whatsoever.

Me too, back in December

Not a peep in reply, not even "thanks for your interest."
