What Do You Mean, "If"??

So I was reading this morning about more U.S. troops being committed to Afghanistan, when I came across this paragraph...kindly note the highlighted section:
"Defense secretary Robert Gates confirmed what president George W. Bush announced at a NATO summit in Bucharest, Romania: that the United States would increase the number of troops in Afghanistan, regardless of whether troops in Iraq would be reduced.
At the NATO session that included Afghan president Hamid Karzai on Thursday, Bush said the U.S. is determined to win the war in Afghanistan, and would continue to be, even if he had to leave the office in January."

Uh..."if"????

If you read the whole article
it seems clear the writer was just using "if" in the sense of "even though". The very next sentence he refers to the next president taking up the fight in January. I wouldn't put anything past these people, but I don't think they'd deliberately tip their hand now if this is what they are planning.
If I heard correctly
last night at our local county Republican Spring Dinner, is that PA has passed a law forbidding confiscation of guns if there martial law is declared.
Anybody know anything about that statement or did I just mis-understand?
I was unable
to find anything on the PA website. I was wishing it was true so we here in AZ could steal the language
could be a slip but I
could be a slip but I imagine it was one of his weird ideas of people stupidly polite or something..
Who recorded it anyway? Maybe it was the reporters error.
We shall see won't we?
From what I have
been reading, Abe Lincoln put the country under martial law and it has never been recinded. We are technically still under martial law. That is one of the reasons that the so called Presidential Orders are allowed by law.
I believe that Ron Paul knows all this but had no way of telling people, without forcing our true government into action, except by the movement and getting people to question everything we were lead to believe. At least I hope that is the case.
At last we know
another reason why Lincoln was murdered by their boy Booth (if in fact Booth actually was the trigger man...today I question everything).
I see nothing in Lincoln's character (despite the lies of the historical revisionists) to suggest that man would have wanted such a regrettable order to be more than temporary, to continue for long into the future—even until today.
So I guess the real culprit in this martial law matter is the one who took Lincoln's place, along with those who surrounded and/or coerced him...
The layers of intrigue just keep getting deeper and deeper...
I'm not trying to rule out
I'm not trying to rule out martial law, but to put everyone a bit more at ease I should point out that the "if" word *could* be harmless given Bush's trouble with choosing words for his communication. For example, "Ron Paul has said he will run again for Congress even if he plans to continue his presidential campaign." In this context the word "if" is used as a conditional affirmative rather than indicating conditional uncertainty. It's poor word choice, of course, a better choice would be the word "though".
That's My Hope, Too
As I read the article and typed up my post, the whole time, I was trying to convince myself that perhaps Bush used the word "if" as to mean "though" or "although," as you propose.
*sigh* I didn't convince myself very well, however...this usage of this little two-letter word, "if", reminds me of the usage of another little two-letter word:
Guess it depends on what your definition of "is" is. -- Bill Clinton
Freudian Slip
UT OH!
"A Freudian slip, or parapraxis, is an error in speech, memory, or physical action that is believed to be caused by the unconscious mind.
Some errors, such as a man accidentally calling his wife by the name of another woman, seem to represent relatively clear cases of Freudian slips. In other cases, the error might appear to be trivial or bizarre, but may show some deeper meaning on analysis. As a common pun goes, "A Freudian slip is like saying one thing, but meaning your mother." A Freudian slip is not limited to a slip of the tongue, or to sexual desires. It can extend to our word perception where we might read a word incorrectly because of our fixations. It is important to note that these slips are semi-conscious. This is to say that these thoughts are consciously repressed and then unconsciously released. This is unlike true Freudian repression, which is the unconscious act of making something unconscious."

Holy Krappies!!
The tiny word "IF" certainly became a huge word in that statement!!
This reminds me of an article I saw recently . Some spokes woman for the UN was saying how folks wold be relocating into cities by the year 2012, and how "they" weren't prepared for this large "influx" of people!! Housing, services, resources are going to have to be dealt with.....
Tell me please, WHY the heck would she say such a thing...hmmmm...
the article was quite vague.......
Think they know something we don't?? That statement still haunts me!!
suburban sprawl
As gas prices go up people migrate towards population centers so they can avoid commuting to work and paying the high prices on goods that come from having to distribute them to many places all over the area. Why is the word "influx" threatening to you?
"To prove this, let facts be submitted to a candid world."

"To prove this, let facts be submitted to a candid world."
Why is "influx"
Why is the word influx not threatening to you? I'm a country girl and the thought of being "hearded" into the city (for any reason) is unacceptable...... besides, this article was not discussing the influx as being the results of anything specific......My guess is that it is the UN's AGENDA21/Sustainable Development project kicking into gear with "higher gas prices" as the leverage to force sheeple into the cities. Afterall, they can take care of us much easier if we're crammed together in cities.....right?
Bushism
now THAT's a scary slip of the tongue there... oO

Well
That is what many have speculated. That he intends to go with martial law and declare "no election" and stay in office.
I agree with you
I think this has been planned for a long time. My thoughts are get ready for a terrible "attack" some where in the U.S. My guess is in Los Angeles. Or maybe in 2 or 3 cities. Jericho (CBS) doesn't look that much like fiction anymore. :-(
