does anybody know about "the raw food diet"?

sorry this is a little off topic.

does anyone know of the raw food diet?
the theory is you only eat raw natural food which hasn't been cooked. cooking destroys all the enzymes and all the good stuff.
i beleive you can still eat meats (just un-cooked) as well as eggs.
people say it gives them more energy, need less sleep, more happy and mental clarity.
sounds interesting.
anyone know about this? is on it? tried it and dosen't work?
please discuss

Denmark was plagued by a serious food shortage.

"The value of whole, unrefined foods .was dramatically demonstrated on a grand scale during the First World War. Denmark was plagued by a serious food shortage. The government assigned Dr. M. Hindhede, the director of the Danish Institute of Nutrition Research, to design a program for protecting the nation from the hunger threat.

The first action of Hindhede was to increase whole- grain production by limiting livestock production and curtailing the sale of meat, thus saving grain for human consumption. Production of alcoholic beverages was banned for the same reason. Also, grain processing was stopped and only whole-grain bread and cereals were allowed to be sold. Farmers were directed and encouraged to produce more grain, green vegetables, fruits, milk and butter, instead of meat."

"These simple, but from a nutritional standpoint revolutionary , changes in eating habits resulted in spectacular and rapid changes in the health condition of the whole nation. The death rate dropped over 40% in one year. Diseases that affected other European countries, including the dreaded influenza epidemic, bypassed Denmark. In only a few years, Denmark became the healthiest nation in all of Europe! " (p. 46)

I recommend this detox program to clean out the colon.

Do your own research, but I truly believe in this program. They also have one for kidney and liver detox.

I could never just eat raw fruits and veggies for the rest of my life, (I like steak too much) but I can do a 5 day - 2 week program once a year.

You also can google Dr. Shulze and read about the man and products.

Best of luck.

I'm not disciplined enough

I'm not disciplined enough to do a raw food diet, but I can see it's appeal

Where do you get your

information? I have over ten science books and numerous journals dealing with enzymes and not one source has ever claimed that enzymes are destroyed at 118 degF. The only place I have seen this information is in raw food books (I have several) and on QuackWatch.com. This information is FALSE. Amalyse enzymes are used to break down carbohydrates. Turn starches into sugars. Which is the exact process used in brewing. Most breweries mash (which is the process of having the enzymes break-down the starches into sugars which are then used by the yeast to make alcohol)their beer usually between 140 to 165 degrees. We have actually gone higher with some success. So if one type of digestive enzyme prefers 140-165 degrees to actually do their work, how can they be destroyed at 118 degF? It's impossible.

I am not debating the raw diet, I recommend 90% raw to my clients, just this misplaced falsehood.

Sorry

This was meant for RawFoodLiberty below.

There are differing opinions, but towards raw I go . . . . 100%

Cooking Destroys all Enzymes - Professor Virtanen
"Cooking destroys enzymes 100%. Enzymes are vital catalysts, absolutely essential for the proper digestion and assimilation of the food, as well as for all other functions in your body. Nobel Prize Winner, Professor Virtanen, from Finland, has demonstrated that in the process of chewing raw foods, new active substances are formed in the mouth with the help of enzymes. It is estimated that about 600 various enzymes are essential for human health, but all enzymes in foods are destroyed in cooking. In addition, cooking destroys many of the vitamins. Water-soluble vitamins B and C are particularly vulnerable to the effect of heat and cooking. Minerals also are depleted by cooking and are usually thrown away with the cooking water."

And yes, not cooking foods over 105 degrees is a personal opinion, but I am learning how to make a "slow cooked" energy soup, which is closer to 118 degrees. I'm doing more green smoothies too. Also, there are popular recipies for "fermented" raw beverages. And alchohol destroys cells . . . dries them out. That too, an opinion from reasearch.

And never forget, “Humans, despite our artistic pretensions, our sophistication and many accomplishments, owe the fact of our existence to a six-inch layer of topsoil and the fact that it rains.”

More heat speeds up the fermentation process . . .

Alcohol is lethal. I actually prefer the idea of 108 to 112 degrees as being easier on the cellular make up. I like the electricity.
The rawfood lifestyle is not a diet and not a religion. If you eat cooked sometimes, doesn't mean you've failed. The life style is about better food choices. The body does digest cooked food, but not as efficiently as raw foods. Make food your medicine, and medicine your food. This blog has some great references for learning to do the raw lifestyle.

And never forget, “Humans, despite our artistic pretensions, our sophistication and many accomplishments, owe the fact of our existence to a six-inch layer of topsoil and the fact that it rains.”

What do you

mean, "you prefer the idea of 108 to 112 degrees"? Are you talking about enzymes or something else. In addition temperature does effect fermentation but no brewery that I know of heats the wort to speed up fermentation. They cool it to stop fermentation but nobody heats it. Is you statement about alcohol a statement of opinion or of science?

I respect researchers claiming enzymes are altered from heat.

When you are making beer in the above example . . . . does the brewmaster begin with "roasted hopps" or "cook's" the Amalyse "before" added to the vat's unassisted fermentation process? (like cooked food "before" we put it in our mouth). We can put either cooked or uncooked food in our mouth "before" the fermentation (digestion) process begins.
If the ingredients to making beer were cooked "before" the fermentation process, the vat would putrify. Like sit there and grow bacteria of a variety of colors, but no beer. Like your mouth. It's a vat. Adding uncooked ingredients is better.

For whatever reason, the whole food un-cooked diet thru testimonials and cure rates, is astronomically better than a cooked food product.

Try it yourself . . . . you know, the big challenge . . . . go three days eating nothing cooked, just peel it and it it so to speak.
Experiment: Cook an egg . . . looks different . . . . hmmm .... looks coagulated . . . more solidified, changed . . . I guess I'll eat it anyway . . . hmmm . . .
The Ron Paul movement is based on clear thinking individuals that can put up with the stressfulness of absorbing upsetting facts; and a raw diet is hands down far superior. It is important we be changing our dietary habits around the globe. For a meat based planet has already failed us, and perhaps the greatest cause of major problems not only environmentally, but economically.

And never forget, “Humans, despite our artistic pretensions, our sophistication and many accomplishments, owe the fact of our existence to a six-inch layer of topsoil and the fact that it rains.”

My experience...

Years ago (maybe 10?) my whole family was on a modified Hallelujah Diet (80% raw, including juicing/20% cooked - no animal products). I don't really remember any details about how it made us feel. There are many people that claim that the Hallelujah Diet has greatly improved their health.

Two summers ago, I was experiencing severe headaches daily and so decided to try the Hallelujah diet again. My headaches went away and I felt a lot better. Unfortunately, it is a very hard diet to keep on, especially if the rest of the family is eating other food. I stayed on it for 2 weeks, before gradually going back to our regular diet (which is much healthier than the Standard American Diet).

While we don't know, there is speculation that being on the Hallelujah Diet when I was 11 may have slowed down the progression of my kidney disease (one of the explanations why I would need a transplant at 21 versus my younger brother at 14 and my younger sister at 13 or 14).

Dr. Jim Carey Q&A June7, 2008 ~Rawfooder~

Question:
Should we include raw with minimally cooked foods?
Is cooking broccoli and carrots releasing more nutrients?

I think we make too much about the anti-oxidants issue, when the real issue here is about digestive enzymes. When we start cooking our food, the pancreas has to generate the enzymes to digest the food, and that’s a lot of work on the body.
When you’re eating raw foods, the enzyme required to digest the food is contained in the food. And not only that . . . . . it’s the properly tagged enzyme to digest that particular food. When your body has to produce the enzymes, it looks at what you put in there, and it sort of makes a guesstimate of say well, “I’ll tag the enzyme this way . . . and I think it will work”.
That’s why you notice . . . when you eat cooked corn . . . it comes out the other end as undigested. Cooked corn, especially kernel corn out of the can, or inside a casserole, or something when you eat like that, the corn all comes out and it doesn’t seem like anything happened . . . especially when that’s the only thing at the meal . . . because the body can’t properly tag the enzyme for cooked corn.
But when the body is eating raw corn . . . it has the enzyme in it . . . and that’s why it’s completely digested.
If there’s an evidenciary thing . . . I’m an scientist and engineer, and like science projects that I can try on myself. And that’s a good one . . . raw corn, especially when it comes into season here in Georgia.
So the real thing here is about the digestive enzymes being contained in the food and when we start cooking them we loose that advantage and go back to the condition . . . that the body has to do all of the work.
You here this all the time . . . “Oh, I only need 4-6 hours of rest, and I bounce out of bed and I work so much harder. . . I have so much more energy and feel so much better!”
When the body doesn’t have to produce enzymes that’s all found energy.
That’s saved energy. It’s a day of labor your body did not have to do. By some estimates, it’s eight hours of work your body did not have to do for raw fooders.

Oh, and one other note about carrots too. Carrots, if you look at the nutritional break down chart, there’s not much nutrient in the carrot itself. The carrot tops . . . that’s where the nutrients are. People think its strange when I go out to my garden with my shears and I take the carrot tops off and throw them in my smoothie . . . you’ll get more nutrition out of those carrot tops than you will the carrots themselves.

And never forget, “Humans, despite our artistic pretensions, our sophistication and many accomplishments, owe the fact of our existence to a six-inch layer of topsoil and the fact that it rains.”

Persons whom have followed the vegan or vegetarian lifestyle:

Some of the most notable are Plato, Plutarch, Pythagoras, Socrates, Seneca, Tretullian, Chrysostom, Ovid, Moses, Zoroaster, Buddha, Jesus, Pliny, Porphyry, Hippocrates, Voltaire, Leonardo da Vinci, Sir Francis Bacon, Rosseau, Alexander Pope, Linnaeus, Shelley, Tolstoy, Sir Isaac Newton, Benjamin Franklin, Horace Mann, Ghandi, Bernard Shaw and Woody Harrelson, Demi Moore and Dennis Kucinich to name but a few.

Raw vegans regard good health and vitality as a normal way of life. Our goal is health, in a perfect balance of body, mind and spirit. We find health in the balance of the physical, mental, emotional and spiritual aspects of man. We therefore select a diet which will accomplish this goal.

And never forget, “Humans, despite our artistic pretensions, our sophistication and many accomplishments, owe the fact of our existence to a six-inch layer of topsoil and the fact that it rains.”

The modern "balanced meal" is a fallacy.

The strongest amimals in the world - elephant, rhinoceros, hippopotamus, camel, horse, bull - are all vegetable feeders.

A bull, in order to produice one pound of meat, consumes 100 pounds of grain.
A pig eats enough grain in two months to feed a man for a year.

Another study shows that 4% of the energy value of what an amimal consumes is recovered in beef. Raising amimals for food is a decidedly uneconomic use of agricultural resources.

And never forget, “Humans, despite our artistic pretensions, our sophistication and many accomplishments, owe the fact of our existence to a six-inch layer of topsoil and the fact that it rains.”

I'm not a vegetarian, but I

I'm not a vegetarian, but I do agree with the latter statement on efficiency of raising livestock for food.

Most of the (false) arguments against biofuels claim that the US doesn't have enough arable land to meet its energy goals by growing crops for fuel.
They conveniently overlook the fact that the vast majority of agricultural land in the world, and particularly the US, is used for raising livestock--mostly cattle.

rubish argument. what about

rubish argument.

what about lions, tigers, cheetahs, bears, sharks, gorillas, eagles, whales, t-rex, lygers?

It's all raw . . . not cooked.

One of the longest living lions was a vegetarian. He lived 27 years, and wouldn't eat meat even when you placed it in front of him. Many zoo's feed their amimal vegetarian. Especially bears and silver back gorillas, and they have less disease.
Re-read the above post from Dr. Jim Carey about digestive enzymes.
Do you really want a neocon with a 55 gallon drum of oil under one arm, and a pharmaceutical bag in the other, to dictate your health and environment? But you do have control over your arm and hand . . . and what you put in your mouth. You may have already realized that the box your fast food came in may be healthier than the fast food itself.

And never forget, “Humans, despite our artistic pretensions, our sophistication and many accomplishments, owe the fact of our existence to a six-inch layer of topsoil and the fact that it rains.”

I'd Stray From Raw Meat

You can do what you want though.

The problem with it lies in the blood.

If your an animal I guess you'd be comfortable with it.

I at least cook it til its done, "no blood".

M'mm yum yum yum.

Vegetarians are weak, abstaining from meats. I won't listen to any argument of the opposite cause "I know"! But, different folks have different intake requirements. A bite or two may be all that you need.

Further excellent info for the raw message, www.health101.org and www.fredericpatenaude.com are a must visit and absorb. These are good 100% raw advocates - Don Bennett, health 101, calls himself a DAS, Disease Avoidance Specialist - he helps people do the raw lifestyle correctly and successfully. Frederic Patenaude is right on also - his book Raw Secrets is invaluable for people wanting to make a success of starting a 100% raw lifestyle - it is available as a download from his sight . . . for a price - it was really valuable to people I know when they were at the beginning of this path.

In the little bit of time I have right now, these are my thoughts: We need to stay in reality. Realistically most people need to take these changes gradually. 1st - The RAVE DIET, www.ravediet.com is the realistic place to start. RAVE is a catchy acronym No Refined Foods, No Animal Products, No Vegetable Oils, and No Exceptions and do Exercise. The RAVE DIET is available in a book that comes with an DVD. That same DVD "Eating Plus" is available separately too. If people can't do this, they haven't a chance of succeeding on 100% raw. 2) If they can do RAVE in general, then make the total switch to whole grains (brown rice, millet, and oatmeal) and fruit for calories - eliminate the nuts and seeds almost completely. A number of people speak to this. People who go this far will do very well and may not want to go completely raw. It certainly is a much better place than where they started. 3) gradually eat RAVE raw which will move them to Doug Graham's 80/10/10, www.foodnsport.com, which is what I think works over the long haul. As Doug says, the principles are so simple and the details are many. This requires people to learn and keep learning.

As I see it, the trick to eating healthily 100% raw is to eat enough and a wide variety of plants. The high priorities are Enough Calories of Nutrient Dense foods. Nutrient Density, Nutrients/Calorie, is a Joel Furhman term, www.drfurhman.com . By nutrients, he means micronutrients: vitamins, minerals, and phytonutrients. Every affluent person has no trouble obtaining the macronutrients, protein-carbohydrate-fat. The problem we are having results from obtaining these macronutrients from nutrient poor foods and in the wrong proportions. AND the diet alone is not enough. Health depends heavily on the whole balance. The correct diet, however, helps us achieve in the other areas: Rest and Sleep, Exercise, Sunshine, and Emotional Peace.

And never forget, “Humans, despite our artistic pretensions, our sophistication and many accomplishments, owe the fact of our existence to a six-inch layer of topsoil and the fact that it rains.”

For information on this go to

www.garynull.com. He has a PHD in Nutrition and is a research scientist.
Some foods require cooking in order for the body to be able to utilize the nutrients. Cooking beans is a must or you can't digest the nutrients. Broccoli must be lightly steamed to break down the fiber that holds the nourishing parts. Cauliflower is toxic when eaten raw.
Nuts are great raw they have high nutritious fat content and it is a healthy fat.
Sprouting is easy and takes little effort. Get some heirloom seeds for sprouting and soak them in a glass jar for a few seconds rinse off, cover the opening with a straining cloth and empty out the water. Do this once a day and in a few days they will sprout. Keep rinsing them once daily until they turn green and add them to your salad.
Juicing is the ultimate in getting concentrated nutrition. You get about 5 times the nourishment from a fruit or vegetable when you juice it.
Good luck!

Lots of interesting comments

As a nutritionist with a masters in Human Nutrition and a Ph.D. in Holistic, I can see both sides of the equation. I, with a colleague, wrote all of the course material that Hallelujah Acres uses for their correspondence courses. I have worked with clients over the years. I have also gotten somewhat familiar with the Ayurvedic way of thinking. I have seen Howard Lyman and know what he says. I have also read several books on the problems with milk. A book called "The China Study" by T. Colin Campbell is essential reading for anyone wanting to understand better why animal products should be kept to a minimum. All of this helps to get a bigger picture.

Raw food is primarily food straight from the plant, with no processing. That is why it is so healthy. Fruits, vegetables and legumes are extremely nutrient-dense so they should be the primary foods in your diet. But, they don't necessarily have to be eaten raw all of the time. In the winter your body (per the Ayurvedic philosophy) does better on lightly cooked soups and stews. I have found, personally, this to be true. I crave salads like crazy when the weather warms up but crave my veggies in soups and stews with cool weather.

Grains are difficult to eat raw and actually very bad for you raw. The way to eat grains and beans raw is to sprout them. This can be very labor intensive, along with anything that you do when you decide to eat a raw diet.

A raw diet is a therapeutic diet. I have used it for clients for this. However, 100% raw is not something I recommend because I have seen too many people get very sick on this. We are all biochemically unique and require different ratios of nutrients. One person may do extremely well on this diet while someone else will waste away. Remember you, as an individual, are unique. But, eating things as close to nature as possible is best.

Have a great day!

What does this have to do with the topic?

I am not sure what you are getting at. My signature line has a quote from the Proverbs and it does not contradict what Jesus said, how could it? Jesus said that we could do anything through Him and nothing without Him. So what exactly does your comment mean?

I can say

I've been a vegan for 15 years and it is not expensive to eat raw foods. I have more energy than anyone in my family & the optometrist has lowered the prescription of my contacts twice (eyes keep getting better -- or brain more clearer, not sure which)

It's basically anything you can grow in the ground and eat unprocessed/uncooked. If you don't want to end up in the hospital, don't mess with eating raw meat or eggs -- you can get Trichinellosis (worms), E. coli food poisoning or Salmonella food poisoning.

There's many books about it but read up on it first. "Thank God for Raw" by Julie Wandling is a good one.

Good luck.
