Rise of the Retro-Cons

0 votes

I am writing this article because I believe we need to begin our change over to a new title. Right now, many of us (me included) call ourselves "Ron Paul Republicans." This has been a great title, but we need to start moving past that regardless of whether or not Dr. Paul gets the nomination or presidency. We need to title ourselves to continue this movement and identify better as a movement behind a cause instead of a movement behind a person.

I have considered many titles, but I think Retro-Conservative fits the best. Paleo-Conservative is not such a great term because it almost sounds as if they are fossilized, and the paleo-con movement tries to remove itself as far as possible from the republican party, and we don't. Retro-Conservative, I think, hits home a bit better because it invokes the imagery of re-emerging or going back to something better.

So what do you guys think? Should we coin the new term "Retro-Conservative" and start utilizing this to describe ourselves? I think the Retro-Cons versus the Neo-Cons will be a lot more effective than the Paleo-Cons versus the Neo-Cons.

****UPDATE****
Thanks for all the good posts, keep them coming. Though I am starting to see a theme develop. The posts seem to say we should keep being "Ron Paul" Republicans. OK, I understand the sentiment, I mean, I have donated, I am a precinct leader, I am a delegate (both precinct and state), I did campaign and canvass and work my ass off for the cause of getting Dr. Paul in the White House, but even if he becomes president, we need to keep the whole movement going and associate it with an idea. I love being a Ron Paul Republican, but eventually we need the whole movement needs to be associated with an idea, not a person. Eventually you will have people invoking Dr. Paul's name but with a different ideal in there (remember we have Neo-Cons who say they are Reagan Republicans but they do not even promote Reagan's ideals!). So we need to make this broader and bring in more people. I am discussing this movement as a whole, for a long time to come. Remember, Dr. Paul said he is part of this movement and he has never said he is the movement. If we wish to truly embrace his ideology, we need to understand that and understand he cannot do it alone, we need a congress, governors, and local leaders to be help him bring this about. Just thought I would add my thoughts to this, taking into account the replies. Just trying to open a dialog to discuss the movement as a whole. :)

Ron Paul Republicans is just fine with me.

It's already called "classical" or "traditional" liberalism. Thomas Jefferson and Thomas Paine were liberals.

I like that one

That sounds good too, but it sounds more like another party instead of a movement. :)

Not sure if I agree with

Not sure if I agree with you... Yeah, it could sound like a party or a movement. I'm a Freepublican in the Freedom movement.

Who doesn't like the word "Freedom". Even a "Democrat" wouldn't be repulsed by the name "Freepublican"... Think about it...

Looks like Ron Paul Republicans

are winning the popular vote here. Let history remember the man who inspired us!

'Live for yourself, there's no one else more worth living for,
Begging hands and bleeding hearts
Will only cry out for more...'

You are right. Very good name indeed!

I am Ron Paul

If we change our name,we will lose ground, nobody would know who we are.We have come to far to do that now.

I don't think we would lose ground

I don't think we would lose ground. Eventually we need to spread our scope, so that others join the movement even more. From my experience at the conventions, it is VERY easy to bring other people to our side when we leave the good doctor's name off and just present the ideals themselves. On the flipside, I notice that even someone you agree on with the ideology will immediately change their attitude when you attach the name. I am not saying we do this tomorrow or even a few months.. But we do eventually need to make this into a movement. If (god forbid!) Dr. Paul does not get the nomination or presidency, then a lot of people will fall off and the "Ron Paul Republicans" will become a very small group of true-believers like you and me. That is why I am presenting this idea way before it is necessary.

As for me, I am proud to be

As for me, I am proud to be a Ron Paul Republican now and in the future.
We are the future.

ORGANIC-LIBERAL

This means original liberal, like Organic Constitution means the original constitution.

But, what I'm trying to aim at is to invite a wide range of people (including liberals) to our camp by using these two very popular words, Organic and Liberal.

I might be wrong, but I don't think conservatives would mind to be called Organic-Liberal as long as they know what it means. I also think the name is quite inviting to liberals.

What do you think?

Liberalism is based on change

Liberalism is based on changing the ideology to something completely new. We want to change things, but back to a prior state then we want to conserve that ideology as the long-term state. :)

No he has not lost

No.. He has not lost and I never implied he would lose. I am a delegate for a reason.. And that is to not only change the platform, but to help knock McCain out of the way, so Dr. Paul can get the nomination (hopefully the presidency even!). I believe in never say die.. :)

I am a Constitutional Republican.

I am an Anarchist Republican

Which is pretty much what the constitution points out. Most people will think of CNN's version of "anarchy" where people are killing each other, but in anarchy there is the rule of law (according to Crates of Thebes, inventor of anarchy as a form of government).

"There is a city Pera in the midst of wine-dark *Tuphos,
Fair and fruitful, filthy all about, possessing nothing,
Into which no foolish parasite ever sails,
Nor any playboy who delights in a whore's ass,
But it produces thyme, garlic, figs, and bread,
For which the citizens do not war with each other,
Nor do they possess arms, to get cash or fame."

* Literally: Zeitgeist

Crates of Thebes

"Walls are stronger than the men that defend them."

Khan

"Walls are stronger than the men that defend them."

Ghengis Khan

But they possess arms to overthrow an unjust Government!

"Walls are stronger than the men that defend them."

Khan

"Walls are stronger than the men that defend them."

Ghengis Khan

I think it's bullshit

I am a Ron Paul Republican. I want to stick the name of the greatest statesman of our lifetime right in the elites' fat ass faces for the rest of their amoral woebegotten lives.

I want them to know who inspired us.

I want Dr. Paul to be forever recognized for his bravery and honesty.

It won't be too long before the whole world knows what Ron Paul Republicans are, and what we stand for.

I will not pander to the media brainwashers by trying to make our movement into a TV-friendly 'zinger'.

I am a Ron Paul Republican, and I am proud of it, and proud of Dr. Paul.

Besides, it's catchy

Will only cry out for more...'

'Live for yourself, there's no one else more worth living for,

Will only cry out for more...'
