The First Ad
Submitted by Captain Falcon on Sat, 10/27/2007 - 14:03This is the first television ad made by the official campaign http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=30yxHqSUva8. It is a complete travesty and if that's how they're going to spend our money, maybe we shouldn't be donating to the official campaign. Paul should let private citizens make his commercials. There are endless inspirational and moving ads on youtube, and the official campaign gives us this. I'm mad as hell.
*edit* I've gotta say this too, because after reading the responses throughout the day, it needs to be said. No one is destabilizing the movement. I'm not calling for an end to donations. We're not going to any other candidate. We're just frustrated with an ad. Chill
*edit 2* The second ad is out and it's much better. Ron Paul needs to sell Ron Paul, not bad actors. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ay4vXZWxeuU

No Reason
This has been on the front page for 2 days, if it's gonna die, let it. Don't bump it just so it stays up.

bumpitty bump bump... bump, bump.
I think the first ad does more harm than good. The second one is O.K., at least thats how I feel after watching the first one.

still here
well?
i'm bumping this up until i get a response from Operation NH
Operation NH
i donated my $100 to the Operation NH . my impression from them was that the goal was if we raised $15,000 byran lloyd would kick in $5000 and they would start the proccess of airing these ads.well we met that goal and now have $25,000 in the bank, according to the website, now the goal is for $50,000? what are you waiting for ? a million? run the ads now and when people see them, more contributions will pour in when they see that this is legit and its working. its not that i distrust you people but lots of people are very cautious when it comes to donating to people who are not part of the official campaign.
2nd ad much better
One small suggestion: a little music please.
COME ON FOLKS- CHECK OUT AD 2 - ITS MUCH BETTER...
AGAIN... whats done is done, but ad 2 is out now and its awesome... lets just put Ad 1 behind us and move on. Ad 2 far outstrips ad 1 and removes hopefully any damage done...
LETS JUST BY-PASS AND FORGET ABOUT AD 1 as probably most people have done as the fell asleep 10 seconds into it...
I googled both 1st and 2nd ads
I read several comments bashing the first ad. I think the first ad was perfect because it does a setup for the second ad which hits more on the issues that matter to the target audience. I give full support to the RP Campaign. They understand how best to reach the target that they need to reach.
We need to calm down and know that God can change anyones mind if he so chooses. Maybe we need to pray that God would give Ron Paul favor and that these ads would bring about a favorable response. This would be much more productive.
I've gotten mad too over some blog statements but it was my trying to control what I have no control over.
May God give favor to Ron Paul in NH. May God give him favor in the Primaries.
Thanks be to God for Ron Paul
That ad
is underground.
Very low budget. Do you know what would make this dope? If he had a ten advert series, all this remarkably cheesy, but improving the entertainment value of them along the way.

Is it possible? Reverse Psychobabble to the Rescue!
Someone commented (below) the following: And yes, I think that the "online supporters" should collect money for buying time slots for their own ads. Actually, this is already happening and this ad will probably catapult those efforts now! The centrally planned econo... eh sorry... campaign isn't as competent as the distributed Ron Paul internet community when it comes to marketing.
Hey, now I get it... New Thought!
Is it possible this ad was made SO HORRIBLY BAD on purpose?
No, not as a joke or anything, but seriously, intentionally, and in order to *fire up* all the truly creative, quality-minded, professional people in the grassroots -- to get us to really start making a whole slew of REALLY GOOD ads... and then start funding them to the MAX independently of the campaign?
WOW! Those official campaign guys really ARE smart. They've been bothered that WE weren't doing much with Radio & TV and were "waiting" for the official campaign... So, they decided to use "reverse psychobabbology" on us so that the grassroots campaign gets off our collective duff and takes over the TV and Radio ad campaign as well... amazing!
So let's go DO IT!
Let's fund OperationNH to the hilt! And then let's quit puttering around on YouTube and start making and airing our own media blitz of campaign ads!
(Hey, I don't REALLY think that is what's behind this -- but if we gotta do some self-deception here, I prefer the above to the "The campaign KNOWS more than you... Trust Big Brother, Big Brother loves you... Ohmmm" -- at least the reverse psychobabble concept puts a positive spin on the thing! And it is MOTIVATING instead of demotivating.)
Good Concept - Lets Hold a Contest!
Perhaps someone at the campaign could hold a contest to “Challenge” supporters to produce their best Ron Paul TV and Radio ads. The content could be reviewed and potentially re-produced for a cleaner look. Supporters could help weed out the winners with popularity and total views to narrow the field. There could be a prize of $2000.00 or something to assist motivations (though I suspect that prize will ultimately be reinvested in the cause).
There are plenty of highly intelligent and creative individuals in this campaign. If the campaign uses the power of that enormous email list they could find plenty of highly skilled and appropriately motivated individuals to do some exceptional work.
This should better capture the "passion" of the campaign and spread the word. Not to mention the potential additional media exposure with the explosion of You Tube commercials.
Come on people! Let’s use our strengths here!
Great idea if it was September.
But we are basically at November. That means 60 some days to Iowa and around 80 to NH (unless it changes again).
There is not enough time left for a "contest" or "challenge" -- there's also not enough time left for a "reboot".
Hence the campaign will probably end up using what they have -- they'll defend it as "good" and "on-target" but if so they are doing so because they don't want to acknowledge that they screwed up at least the first ad, and there is no time to redo it -- besides the airtime is already probably purchased.
The best they can do (and alas, this would require a level of self-honesty that most managers don't have) is to cut their losses, rearrange the airings of the commercials to TRIM the number of times the first ad is aired and move up the airing of the second ad (which is better) and/or even the rest of them (all of unknown quality, but cross your fingers and hope for at least "mediocre").
Major changes in even a small hierarchical organization is like trying to turn a battleship around.
Conversely, grassroots campaigns are more like a thousand little PT boats. They can turn on a dime, change gears quickly, and try a number of approaches fast, then run with what works.
there ain't nothing wrong....
There ain't nothing wrong with the ad. Their is no magic bullet out there. I like "Ron Paul is catching on" bit. Face it, you either like what Ron Paul stands for, or you like the status quo. It's really that simple.
alan laney
Hmmm...
Face it, you either like what Ron Paul stands for, or you like the status quo.
A false dichotomy, a total non-sequitur, and an oversimplification all wrapped up in one pretty little sentence.
I prefer my "reverse psychobabble" theory to poisoned kool-aid that has to be swallowed with logical fallacies, it's THAT simple.
The Ron Paul supporters in
The Ron Paul supporters in this ad are not at fault. I know three of them personally. They are sincere, active RP supporters but when given a SCRIPT to ACT it comes across as INSINCERE, PHONY and CHEESY!! It is everything Ron Paul is not !! He is SINCERE, HONEST, and REAL !! He speaks from the HEART and not from a SCRIPT !! It is said what is spoken from the heart reaches the heart. And don't give me the line, it's targeted to an older audience. I'm an old man and I want HONESTY !! That's what sets Ron Paul apart from the other candidates HONESTY!! I believe the fault lies with the Media Director, Jesse Benton, who IMO should be fired immediately, before he do any more damage to Ron Paul !! Bill Dumas who produced this destructive piece should also be replaced. We could have someone like the producer of RON PAUL: a new hope !!
I smell bad apples at HQ -- Ron Paul Deserves Better
Ron Paul and his entire family are GREAT, sincere, treat the supporters like extended family. Ron Paul is the only office-holding Statesman of our time.
Everyday Ron Paul supporters are infectious, enthusiastic, contagious, sincere.
The same cannot be said of many on the Ron Paul national staff: cold, withdrawn, act as if they are presiding over a funeral march. I have said in frustration that the Ron Paul National Staff never met an enthusiastic Ron Paul supporter they liked! ----
For instance, they took Rachel Mills, one of the best Ron Paul supporters in the country -- and REMOVED HER FROM THE FIGHT. They put her in the Ron Paul Congressional office where she can't be visible in the Presidential campaign anymore. Removing Rachel Mills from the fight would be the type of thing I would do if I were working AGAINST Congressman Paul. But this is what the Presidential Campaign Paid staff arranged.
I believe the Charles Koch syndicate has placed its agents in the Ron Paul national campaign paid staff. (Charles Koch -- pronounced Coke -- is a billionaire friend of the Bush family, funder of the NATIONAL Libertarian Party since 1981, and funder and founder of the sinister Cato Institute since 1977. Koch runs Koch Industries, which has contracts in Iraq like Haliburton, but you never hear of him, do you? He is the NEO-CON funder and corruptor of the Libertarian efforts.) Google "Enemy Within: Cato's Covert Agenda" by Melinda Pillsbury-Foster.
Justine Lamb is a Cato Institute intern -- and she has been running the lackluster ronpaul2008.com website. She refuses to post Ron Paul's best victories, such as his text victories in the FOX News debates. In my judgement, Jesse Benton, national campaign spokesman, is also in league with these Neo-Con corrupters, and should be fired immediately. Even if the likes of Benton just want to be liked and hired by the Washington power structure after the campaign -- they're be just as destructive as a full-blown neo-con infiltrator.
I believe these "false brethern" explain how these utterly lackluster and actually HARMFUL campaign ads were ever made in the first place, (both the first radio ad in NH and the first TV ad.) The ad used before the Iowa Straw Poll looked also like it was made by sabateurs.
In my judgement, these "false brethern", whatever their motivation, are going to WASTE all the campaign donations. This is why the battle must be taken to HQ RIGHT NOW, before it is too late. You mean to tell me that WE VOLUNTEERS are the only ones that can see that DOZENS of ads on Youtube are 1000 times better than this TV dud the paid staff produced? See "Fighting Back for Ron Paul" on YouTube, or "Ron Paul: A New Hope" -- also on YouTube -- for just two examples of what is already out there.
Demand that this ad be withdrawn and replaced with Ron Paul speaking from the heart --- any excerpt from any campaign speech is better than this piece of TV flotsam.
Complain now, loud and long. Email, call, and make your voice heard to Dr. Paul himself and any paid campaign staff at any rally. Tell the paid staff to go look at youtube -- especially the two videos mentioned above. The whole future of our country is on the line. Ron Paul deserves better than this. We, his sincere supporters, deserve better than this. And so does America. We need a Ron Paul family member to take over the campaign and the check book, and start working with the volunteers who have experience in making TV and Radio ads.
I encountered some similar vibes...
At the "private briefing" at Chicago. Paid $1K to get in and was pretty much treated like a piece of dog offal.
The ONLY "official staff" person who was at all approachable or conversational was... the database guy (exactly why he was in Chicago I have NO IDEA, but regardless). The rest of the campaign people present didn't seem to have the "time of day" for any of the supporters in the room... not even a smile and a "thank you for donating and coming."
Seriously, I was totally DEflated and DEmoralized by that briefing. I was also rather offended at the room itself, its furnishing (or rather lack therof, in all seriousness, I've been at political meetings in farm-barns that felt warmer are more welcoming), and the Hors d'oeuvres amounted to a cracker, cheese & veggie plate worth maybe $20 at the local grocer. Now I have no idea whether the planning for that fiasco was by the official campaign or the local meetup, but the campaign staffers certainly could have detailed ONE person to make certain it was worthy of the $1K asking price -- and their attitude in the room needed to be at least above freezing.
I came back and had to spend about 3 days in total "Youtube" rehab to re-energize and re-motivate, telling myself that even if the "official campaign" was staffed by frozen morons, the grassroots could succeed.
But it DOES make me wonder. After all, the Reagan administration was in its later years, completely co-opted and derailed by the Bushites... which led to Clinton... which led to GW and Cheney-In-Charge. Can the same happen here -- even IF we win? A definite possibility; after all, we are NOT just electing a single man -- reality is that we are electing an "administration" and all we really see is the 1 man. I trust Ron Paul... I do not know whether I can trust his executive staff, because I do not know them... and alas, I cannot help pick them.
Anyway, I had driven all of that down beneath the surface; but the sheer stupidity of this ad brings it to the surface again, and makes me wonder WHO is advising and making these decisions, how trustworthy are they, and exactly what is THEIR agenda?
HOLD UP
a little bit. Don't get too conspiratorial. This campaign is quite unusual, and the staff doesn't feel they can consult on or advise grassroots efforts. From things I have heard (second-hand), they are frustrated as well, and believe that their hands are tied by campaign laws (which of course, are all unconstitutional).
But let's not lose the forest for the trees. This is about electing Ron Paul. I don't think I'm inclined not to waste too much time on any negativity. We have a campaign to win, let's win it.
There are many many obstacles on the way. Our biggest obstacle is NOT the campaign staff, but the mass media, the media attacks from the neocons (like Medved), and the fact that people don't know who Ron Paul is, even yet.
Get out there.
Wasn't trying to be "conspiratorial"... just staffers are "cold"
...to the supporters.
To have expressed a bit of warmth in the private briefing would NOT, I assure you have been a violation of any election law.
OTOH, to be treated as if you are nothing but a "cow to be milked" for money is downright offensive.
And my own suggestion is NOT for the "official campaign" to give advise or direction to the grassroots -- but instead the OPPOSITE; for the "official campaign" to be more accepting of advise and consultations FROM the grassroots. The latter is NOT proscribed by any election law, only by hubris on the part of "professional" campaign personnel.
Undoubtedly the staff are "frustrated" -- but I get the sense that this frustration is more from the fact that they want to, but cannot "control" the grassroots movement (and thank God for that!).
This is about electing Ron Paul.
Yes and no. It is actually about electing a new and different administration, for which Ron Paul will be the leader. Problem is that we have virtually no idea who else will be a part of that "administration" -- hence the source of OUR worries and OUR "frustration." Movements, campaigns and administrations can be, and historically often have been "co-opted" by people who join the "bandwagon" as it gains success, or who are brought in as some type of "compromise" in order to broaden appeal or support. To say so is to acknowledge reality that such an administration is a collection of many people -- often coming with their own agendas and careers -- and is a common occurrence, not necessarily a conspiracy.
(And yes, I know there was a "conspiracy/infiltration" part of the posting I was responding to, but I ignored that on purpose... as IMHO "Never attribute to malice that which is adequately explained by stupidity." is a good rule-of-thumb.)
Wolf in sheep's clothing
Dr. Paul's ideas (not original to him) are challenging the most powerful organizations in the world. The military industrial complex, the pharmaceutical industrial complex, and the central banking cartels. They have billions upon billions and almost limitless resources. Please don't be so naive as to think they wouldn't try to infiltrate the campaign and take it down from within. This is an old trick. I don't know whether or not this is happening (probably), but in the least we must consider it a possibility.
"I don't think I'm inclined not to waste too much time on any negativity." Misconception. Doesn't sound like angry negativity to me. Legitimate concern is more like it.
"There are many many obstacles on the way. Our biggest obstacle is NOT the campaign staff..." How do you know? I'm not saying the campaign staff ARE wolves in sheep's clothing, but we must consider it.

Sorry, Campaign Staff Looks Like Major Obstacle
The sincerity of jwalsh is obvious, and I sympathize with his sentiments. But the problem is: the campaign staff holds the $5 million. If they are misdirected or totally incompetent -- it doesn't matter --- it comes out in the same place.
To put the BEST light on all that's happening,I feel like we have grade school kids (RP Paid Staff) fighting seasoned Marines (Big TV Networks and Neo-Cons behind the RNC and the DNC).
I have NEVER heard of a campaign that won't communicate with its supporters. If this is in the Communistic McCain-Feingold bill -- THEN WHY ISN'T RP PAID STAFF FILING SUIT AGAINST THIS NEO-CON SUBVERSIVE LAW?????
Here is where the campaign is falling down:
1. Will not point out that MSM, especially 5 Big TV Networks are WORKING TOGETHER to censor Ron Paul -- as well as issuing phony polls that say Guiliani is front runner; Guiliani will only win in the COMPUTER COUNTED STATES where they hide the ballots from the people and issue phoney results. Guiliani will drop out of Iowa because he has NO REAL SUPPORT.
2. Demand open vote count, instead of allowing the ballots after Iowa and NH to be counted by computer companies IN SECRET. And the RP PAID STAFF is PROTECTING this outrage about to be perpetrated against Ron Paul and against America. WHY??????????
3. Watch vote counting in NH and Iowa --this is not being done. Search for "A House without Doors" to read HOW Iowa GOP stole the Iowa Caucus from Pat Buchanan in 1996 -- and Iowa GOP is ready to do it again in 2008 against Ron Paul if necessary. Paid Staff knows about the theft in 1996, and is doing nothing to protect Ron Paul. WHY ????????????????????
4. Encourage all Ron Paul supporters nationwide to run for precinct and takeover the GOP from the Neo-Cons. See RonPaulFriendsUSA.com -- the structure is set up and waiting. But no, RP Paid staff treats supporters like little kids by encouraging primarily SIGN WAVING, instead of ADULT POLITICAL ACTIVITY such as the precinct project.
RP Paid staff treats supporters like little kids and ATM's. We don't mind being treated like ATM's (all campaigns need money) -- but ONLY if the RP paid staff starts to run the campaign like they want to win AND like the want to take back the country. See "Fighting Back for Ron Paul" on youtube for an effective TV and radio ad.
Maybe It's Actually Very Good Ad?
There is currently an article on Lew Rockwell.com called "Ron Paul Crossing The Chasm," by Isaac Lopez, that is very interesting! I, too, was initially not very impressed by the first t.v. ad, but now that I've read that article, I am seeing the 1st t.v. ad in a new light. It might actually be a very good, psychologically insightful ad.
I read it as well and can't
I read it as well and can't see what it has to do with a bad ad. Of course TV ads are not targeted at "the tech-savvy youtubers", but they can still be good. Take a look at other candidates ads;

these ads kick Ron Pauls hands down for quality only mind you, but what can we do though?
This ad is horrible and we
This ad is horrible and we stand no chance if this is the crap we are putting on TV. There are You Tube videos that are 1000 times better.

Live Free or Die.
I'm not happy with the ad, but...
My wife(who is supporting Paul, but isn't the typical internet junkie supporter) watched the ad and she didn't think it was bad. I didn't tell her, "COME WATCH THIS HORRIBLE AD!" I just said, "Hey, will you please come watch Ron Paul's first tv commercial and let me know what you think?" Again, she watched it and really didn't think it was that bad. LOL, for those that want to stop donating to the campaign, remember, any name recognition is better than no name recognition. I agree, I think the ad could have be done a lot better, but now that my anger is starting to subside, I agree with some of the others, isn't it stupid that we are yelling about a tv ad, at least they have one. Remember, keep donating, and yes, I think we should let the campaign know we expected more if that's the case, but maybe we should show it to people that don't know a lot about Ron Paul and ask their opinions about it before we, "Pauliacs" cause damage to the campaign by being negative.

This term causes damage to the campaign. I'm not a maniac. Besides, it's not about Ron Paul, it's about liberty. He is simply the messenger, albeit, a very decent, honorable one at that.

this cant be for real... can it?!? Ron Paul doesnt need bad actors supporting his message with all the sincerity and warmth of a sex-ed tape. This is a cruel joke. Say it aint so!

Agreed.
