Sen. John McCain has long said he is in robust health and is strong enough to hike the Grand Canyon, but he also is receiving what his staff Monday termed a "disability pension" from the Navy.
When McCain released his tax return for 2007 on Friday, he separately disclosed that he received a pension of $58,358 that was not listed as income on his return.
On Monday, McCain's staff identified the retirement benefit as a "disability pension" and said that McCain "was retired as disabled because of his limited body movements due to injuries as a POW."

The sum isn't outrageous
As someone who was hurt and had his employment options severely limited while in the navy, a pension makes sense.
However, the moment he found a line of employment where his disability wasn't a problem, I'm not so sure the pension's fair.
Perhaps it's a pension that stays no matter what so that people don't get into that trap of thinking it's not worth getting a job or they'll lose their pension.
I don't think this is a slam dunk political slam in any case. If people aren't willing to reject him for his politics, a smear like this is inconsequential. They'll just move on to the next neocon if they have the stomach for neocons or whatever he is in the first place.

Oh well
I can't stand the McCainiac, but as a 30% disabled vet myself I see no reason to give this guy a hard time for what he's entitled to as a disabled Viet-era combat wounded vet - regardless of how much money his wife has. That money is his retirement pension for the most part, and if he did the time then of course he'll collect what is due to him. You guys sound more like Obamabots on this to me...
If I'm missing something, please accept my apologies.
I agree with you totally
I hate welfare and socialism as much as the next person, and have never taken food stamps, welfare, govt education for my kids, etc etc, but the men who fought for our country who are disabled SHOULD get a disability.
I hope his opponents bring this out at election time
.................................................................
McCain,s Disability
I am a VeitNam Vet with an 80% disability. I also pulled 2 tours in Korea back in the 50"s. Due to the congressional method of rating disabilities I can only draw for 60%, that is about $6000.00 per year. I have written to our GI friendly Mr. McCain, Senator Webb, and to the Secretary of the V.A. I have yet to receive even a "go to H--- " reply from any of them.
They have got theirs why should they give a care or a worry about any of us grunts down in the Enlisted ranks even though had it not been for us they would not be where they are today.
Next election toss them all out and make them try living like a normal civilian!!!!!!!
Self Less...... Not
Gas is killing my business. I somehow bounced 5 checks this week... stress is a killer. Pretty soon no one will have to worry about insurance cheets becuase we'll have no one making anything in this once fine country. No money in my pocket equals no money for the government to hand out like candy.
Shucks... seems like 1 in every 5 people I know are on some sort of government "disabiltiy" and there ain't a damn thing that's keeping them from enjoying their permanent vacation. Meanwhile I'm out here bust'n my ass. So to myself I can easily say McCain is a crook for taking the money that the "new crop" of injured vets could surely use. You can have your opinion, and I can have mine.... and from where I stand in my pile of rising business and living costs.... worse than a crook in my book.

For someone who married into
For someone who married into "richness", using taxpayer money for disability is really as low as can get. It should be for people who really need it and cannot afford to pay the sums, not someone flying around in rented jets! These people from the government, really think the taxpayers are a bunch or idiots, well it's time to wake up to reality, do some real background checking on all the candidates, don't ever base yourself on what the mainstream media tells you, find what they have not told you about Hillary/Barack/McCain, and then you'll be surprised and even feel quite stupid to have been promoting one of these three with all the info you can get from the Internet. Of course, do the same with the good ol' Doc, and you'll see who works for the People and who works for the establishment. Don't let another 12 years get by, for a lack of simple background research you were to lazy to do, cause that would be exactly what "they" want", that you only listen to what CNN, CBS, C NBC, etc, tell you. You have a magnificent document in the Constitution and the Bill of Rights, not to mention the Declaration of Independence!!!! I envy yours, and wish all countries to emulate this wonderful documents. May god bless you freedom lovers, freedom is the answer to most problems we face today. Your rights are GOD given, anyone dare tell the contrary will have to deal with his demons or God himself. He does thing that can only surprise you, you will never see a " miracle" where you could have imagined" it, it will always be a surprise. I would not like to be in the camp that goes against the Light, the Truth, The Creator. We are all one of his creations/children, and those that kill his creations/children, including the Earth, he will "be back" as Schwarzenegger said.

The DP is proof that the grassroots support for Ron Paul and his peaceful message of individual liberty is large, real, and not going away!

I've never served so I can't comment from a strictly military perspective. I do agree with the post further down that mentioned that one of the things that draws so many to Dr. Paul is that with him you get 100% principle, 100% of the time. Don't forget, this is a man who has never taken a congressional junket, always comes in under his yearly budget, and has refused the congressional pention plan. So, fiscal issues and credibility very important to RP supporters.
In may people's minds, the Keating 5 scandal alone was enough to permanently cross JM off their list of "principled" politicians.
As for FDR, if you haven't seen these films, you might want to check them out. They might just change your opinion of him a bit:

McCain III was awarded
McCain III was awarded “medals for valor” equal to nearly a medal-and-a-half for each hour he spent in combat.
For 23 combat missions (an estimated 20 hours over enemy territory), the U.S. Navy awarded McCain III, the son of famous admirals, a Silver Star, a Legion of Merit for Valor, a Distinguished Flying Cross, three Bronze Stars, two Commendation medals plus two Purple Hearts and a dozen service medals.
“McCain had roughly 20 hours in combat,” explains Bill Bell, a veteran of Vietnam and formerchief of the U.S. Office for POW/MIA Affairs -- the first official U.S. representative in Vietnamsince the 1973 fall of Saigon.
“Since McCain got 28 medals,” Bell continued, “that equals to about a medal-and-a-half for each hour he spent in combat. There were infantry guys -- grunts on the ground -- who had more than 7,000 hours in combat and I can tell you that there were times and situations where I’m sure
a prison cell would have looked pretty good to them by comparison. The question really is how many guys got that number of medals for not being shot down.”

Hard to like this guy even back then...lol.
Now the taxpayers are footing his SC as well as his other payroll.
Double-dipping, indeed.

What was the cause of
What was the cause of McCains broken arms during Nam?
Vietnam vets say his arms were broken when he ejected from his cockpit and did not follow orders for ejecting which says you need to keep arms tight to sides to prevent what happened to McCain. Pictures of him the day after he was shot down back up this story because hes in a hospital with casts on both arms.

Also, the amount of disability pension you get is determined by the percent of your disability, 1 to 100% of your base salary. If McInsane is getting $4700 a month, that would probably be close to 100% of his base salary. So he is 90 to 100% disabled according to that.
MCCAIN CRASHED 3 PLANES IN NON-COMBAT MISSIONS, WAS SHOT DOWN, FINISHED 894 OUT OF 899 AT ANNAPOLIS.
He's got to have PTS by the way his anger rises up sometimes.
God help us. We're stuck with 3 of the worst choices we could have for the next POTUS.

Disability Pension my foot!!
This man is worth millions or his wife is, they own at least 8 homes. Money grubbing #$%%. Nothing can surprise me anymore regarding this man.
Your vitriol betrays your motives
Are you going to dispute the fact that it was a missle the "fell" off McCains plane that ignited the inferno that caused the deaths of so many? And we are talking horrific deaths. Nothing like being locked into a compartment with JP5 pouring in on you and burning you to death. Are you going to deny that his father as well as his Grand father were both admirals in the Navy? Are you going to deny that their might have been a cover up? Wheres your proof? Keep posting, the more response we get the better. I also respond very well to personal insults. As far as Wiko whatever it is, I am seeing a bit of difference in what it has had to say about the disaster than was previously posted so I must question the sources who have recently changed the article.
If not us than who?
Well..
My Late Uncle was on the Forrestal when it happened, so, I have more than just conspiracy theory nut case knowledge.
But of course according to you I have no idea what I am talking about.
It was a rocket that Struck McCain's plane while he was waiting to launch. It hit his fuel tank, so, I guess he is at fault for having a full tank of fuel before he took off.
You speak of proof. Where is yours?
As for his Father and Grandfather being an Admiral, yeah, shame on him for having successful family members.
I have a friend whos cousins brothers aunt had an uncle
who claimed he was abducted by a UFO and anally probed. I'm sure McCain's daddy and grand daddy had nothing to do with any of the reports to come out of the tragedy. Just what has McCain been successful at other than dumping his first wife because she was disfigured in an auto accident? Oh yeah, he was pretty good at consistently leaving a trail of destruction behind him.
If not us than who?
Speak of proof...
that should be an easy thing.. after all, we'd just have to look at McCain's military records. Like he says, a little sunshine is a good thing, is it not? That would clear everything up real quick.
Too bad he had them sealed FOREVER... maybe he's just humble?
/sarcasm
So the only thing we have to go by is what he has said.
One of the things he has said is that he exchanged military information in return for medical treatment as a POW. When I was in the military, that was called treason. Yep, we need another one of those in the white house.

As I've said before...
...it's not nice to make fun of a person's mental disability. We're better than this, folks. :-)

While this might be a legitimate benefit, we know that RP, in the same position, would decline more of the *taxpayers money* than he was already getting as his salary.
...let it not be said that we did nothing.
-Ron Paul
Yeah.. but
Well we will never know the answer to such an inane question, But, I can probably guess that Ron Paul, being a veteran himself, would never bad mouth a fellow veteran and former POW for getting a Retirement Disability pension.
I can't even comment on this
I can't even comment on this right now. I believe that just pi#$%^ me off more than I can handle. Unf#@$ably unbelievable!
Yes.. well
It angers me to when disabled veterans get compensation for their injuries. How dare they!
Sure... but $60,000/yr?
Sure... but $60,000/yr? That's more than many families make. I'd like to see records showing that Mr. McCain is actually spending $60,000 each year on medical treatments for these specific ailments.
The $60k was not disability
The $60k was not disability medical coverage, it is a disability pension. Pension as in cash in his pocket. Medical expenses are probably in addition to that amount. But I wouldn't complain about VA hospital medical expenses for injuries he sustained while in the military.
...
WORD!!!
That's more than I made last year and I know of Vets in less comfortable positions than McCanus that most definitely have not received any benefits particularly of that magnitude. The last few years of my fathers life was spent fighting for a few extra hours of home care per week and his income/benefits was far less than my own.

You are ignoring the most
You are ignoring the most important thing. How can the government be paying him as 100% disabled, yet also paying him for a full time senator job?? That is not supposed to happen! AND surely if he is 100% disabled he should not..COULD not, have a job as president, for crying out loud.....
Well...
Generally speaking, veterans who receive service-connected compensation for a physical disability, with a few exceptions, CAN work without penalty to their SC compensation. The exceptions are veterans who have some psychiatric disabilities or veterans with individual unemployability.
So it depends on whether he's batty or not..lol
Again, without access to his military records we'll never know. Since he sealed them for all eternity, we'll never know.
~Live life to its fullest, with an open heart, open arms and most important... an open mind~
Oh we'll find out. Sooner or
Oh we'll find out. Sooner or later he will die and the records will be opened and we will all be saying to rest of the brainwashed stay-the-coursers, "I told you so".

How much
are the paralyzed vets now getting from Iraq war? I bet not $58,000.00 a year!!! Are there any DAV's out that can attest to this?
