Wal-Mart-owned Sam's Club limits rice purchases

BENTONVILLE, Ark. - Sam's Club, the membership warehouse division of Wal-Mart Stores Inc., is limiting how much rice customers can buy because of what it calls "recent supply and demand trends."

The broader chain of Wal-Mart stores has no plans to limit food purchases, however.
Sam's Club says it will limit customers to four bags at a time of Jasmine, Basmati and long grain white rice. Rice prices have been hitting record highs recently on worries about tight supplies.
Sam's Club's restriction is effective immediately at all locations where quantity restrictions are allowed by law. It does not apply to other staples such as flour or oil.

I personally think that there is a coming food shortage and I do not think that we, as Americans, are immune to this. Flour and oil demand are sure to continue to drive prices up and will probably be the next to be rationed. I'm not panicking in any way as some who have posted on other threads have alluded to the fact that everyone is panicking. I have been storing food extra for months now and have a garden started although I do need to get canning supplies. I just hope that if you have a little money to buy a little extra, that you get some while you can.
And FYI from a source close to the Mississippi Militia, there is going to be a planned nationwide trucking strike on May 17th in protest of the gasoline prices. I don't know how accurate that this is, but it is information that I was given today and thought that I would let you guys know.

Did you know the WTO has IMPORT MANDATES for industrialized countries? Japan, which has no shortage of rice, is saying no to the WTO quota. As much as we will be upset about the rising prices, it's really the third world that will suffer the most as farmers are forced by the New World Order to export food when their own nation is starving.

What you REALLY have to understand
is that the commodities market is in danger of a bubble, not unlike the housing bubble going on now. I believe there will be a lot of farmers who spend a lot of money to grow wheat to meet the demands of a shortage will be looking at losing billions. Same with corn (especially corn), rice an other commodities. The crises is the new bubbles being created by an manipulated "free" market.

Asian countries are halting their exports of grains. Australia's rice crop is basically a failure and the wheat crop has suffered as well due to the drought. As far as corn goes, I'm not expert, but there are different types of corn and the stuff they've been growing for fuel isn't necessarily the corn grown for flour.
If demand isn't being met (food riots) then we have a way to go before the grain market becomes a bubble.

No, an increased demand in a free market drives cost down,
astronomical price hikes cannot be justified or explained through a simple demand-supply equation. But many are addicted to this equation and cannot go beyond parroting the formula.
The availability of cheaper money encourages commodity traders to bid up prices. This is another way of acknowledging the formation of a commodity bubble.

I own and have opporated a business for 20 years now... never have I seen increased demand ressult in lower prices... increased demand raises prices... when I was really busy.. I bid jobs higher.. now that its really slow we bid jobs much lower just to have work! when times are good and demand is up you can make more money doing less work.. its the same for your competion.. but when things slow down everyone is bidding to keep food on the table.. now the prices have come down.. commodity traders have nothing to do with the prices people are paying for food these days... the price of diesel fuel and fertilizer are going skyward.. the cost to transport has gone skyward.. the problem is the jerkoffs in washington DC (district of corruption) who have gotten us into a 14 billion dollar per month war, and keep spending money on SOCIALISM here at home.. to pay the bills they counterfeit money. when they create all this extra money it is only a matter of time till it comes back into the economy in inflation! now take inflation and 2.5 billion plus people on the otherside of the world coming into middle class status who want to live the way we do.. now you have competion for all the things we have had.. fuel, food and other commodities! don't believe the talking heads on tv who try to pass the buck from washington DC and say its the commodity speculators.. thats pure BUNK! THE GOVERNMENT IS TO BLAME!

it's ironic because the Chinese have been keeping their currency artifically low for awhile now to keep the trade gap in their favor. Since the Central bank of China helped the FED spread the inflation globally, soon, they won't have the option of rescuing their currency. Although Japan has been complying with the FED's requests, they have been keeping the interest rates fairly high, despite international pressure. They learned from the disastrous monetary policy of the 90's where they actually had negative interest rates. The thing is, nobody would buy their bonds. The Japanese economy is still recovering.

Haiti destoyed its own rice-growing capability
due to socialism and corruption. The Vietnamese wouldn't have been able to sell rice in Haiti in the first place if there hadn't been a market for it.

If we all go out and mass purchase rice or other staples we are only going to further increase the distribution burden. We are not facing bread lines, some other countries are. Consider buying only a little extra over a period of eight to ten weeks. Please at least consider that this could be an attempt to blindly swing Americans' actions based on fear; this method has worked so well in the past.
Yes -- we've heard there have been food riots, there has also been at least some question to whether one of them one staged according a to one liveleak video. Let me just pose to you a question: If you wanted to create an artificial food crisis, what would the best method be? Get on CNN and tell semi-wealthy Americans they are facing food shortages, getting them to get up on purchase hundreds to a thousand dollars of rice beans and other staples? If 25% of the viewers of CNN and Alex Jones show and other shows talking about food shortages all go out and mass purchase these, would it in fact create the food crisis?
If X, Y, and Z poor countries were facing food shortages; and you either held commodities on the market OR were in favor of global depopulation (ie you wanted citizens to die...), what would the best method to exacerbate this situation be? Perhaps it would be to get CNN and Alex Jones show to spew food shortage propaganda; driving up food commodity prices (making the rich investors richer) and further pressuring the few countries still exporting food supplies and the global supply line. Those of you familiar with Problem-Reaction-Solution will recognize this; 'they' create the problem, and offer the solution. The solution appears to be acceptance of GMO foods.
Yes food shortages and crisis are probably undoubtedly coming, but don't help the scum create them. Water and food have been analyzed for use as weapons against people since at least the '70s.
Does anyone remember the Georgia/Florida water shortage that the news basically glossed over last year? (was it FL was short and wanted to steal water from GA or what? I dont remember the full details; b/c the news painted it as not too big a deal... whoops America)? How much of that is occurring elsewhere?

I just got off the phone with someone living in Las Vegas, who told me about bell peppers being $4.00 each there; same price for one dozen eggs.
Isn't there or wasn't there once some sort of law on the books against hoarding in times of crisis? What would happen if one is charged with "hoarding" -- would the food be confiscated, would there be arrests; what? That's something I wonder about as I sock away the rice...

You are not allowed in times of emergency more than 90 days of food. Dunno about the confiscation, because they are allowed to take whatever they want to commandeer in the case of an emergency. The fine for hoarding under the EO is a fine of no more than $10,000 or no more than one year of imprisonment.

& the shelves are full to the max with rice - beans - oil etc. I asked a stocker about any shortage & he looked at me like I was a nut. Now they where out of the Rotisserie chickens - but that may of been because of a coupon - buy one get one free.

There's no shortage of beans and rice at my Wal-Mart store, although people out there somewhere are buying up the larger sacks. There's clearly some shortage of the bulk grains going on that may be related to the third world, I'm guessing. But lots of everything else.
Incidentally, check the "prices per ounce" on the beans and rice---the large sacks do not necessarily have the cheapest prices. The cheapest pinto beans I located at Wally World the other day were in neat little one pound bags.
I assume all you rice hoarders are getting your vegetable gardens ready now--Yes? :D

Do you think if the combination of extremely high prices in gas and the eventual high prices of Beer will make the people wake up. I don't think anything else has done the trick. But mess with beer and tobacco and you might get a revolution really going. The truckers are really gonna get going pretty soon if all this falls down on them. Except how do we know what's going on with the mexican truckers who have no tariffs and tax on their products are doing?
