Interesting obervation about jet fuel exploding...

I was just watching a discovery show that was testing to see weather a spark could cause an explosion in an aircraft fuel tank, and given the right circumstances, it can and will. Here is the interesting part: when it blew up, all that happened was the top got blown off. Everything else was essentially intact. Interesting, eh?

Exploding Kerosene

Yes, kerosene can explode with the right circumstance. The reason a pool of fuel in a tank wouldn't cause a huge explosion is because it just doesn't burn well without a lot of surface area exposed to oxygen. During a catastrophic crash, a lot of fuel gets mixed with oxygen very rapidly and will all start to burn at once. Thus a huge fireball can happen.
