Prisoner Conditions

History shows us that society becomes acclimated to certain tools and techniques when used on the "bad guys", thus paving the way for these same tools and techniques to be used on the populace.

Phone records are good example. Years ago the courts heard requests for wiretaps, and cautiously considered requests for phone records. Today, all of this information is recorded and reviewed by technology that is (and will) be used against things far broader than protecting society from the 9/11 style terrorists that were used to justify them.

Turning to conditions in places like Guantanamo, and more importantly the explanation and justification for these conditions by our government, it amazes me that so few realize how dangerous these precedents are.

There is no "solitary confinement", only "single occupancy cells."

And these cells don't represent segregation in the formal sense because a prisoner may theoretically be able to "communicate through the walls"

A new policy is broadening communication to allow "one phone call per year"

You will be kept alive even if it means being "fed liquid nutrition through tubes inserted in... nostrils daily."

Taxi to the Dark Side

Many "terrorists" in U.S. custody weren't even captured by U.S. forces, but were turned over by parties interested in collecting cash bounties. One can only imagine the outcome here if neighbors could turn in other neighbors for being drug dealers or tax evaders if we could keep a share of the profits. We'd have the Salem witch trials all over again.

The winner for Best Documentary this year was Taxi to the Dark Side, about these policies and the death of suspects in U.S. custody. Many military interrogators used to interview these suspects were only modestly trained, and their work had high levels of visibility to top levels of the administration. These men and women were under significant pressure to deliver "results", and the outcome was predictable.

Sadly, our approach may be doing more to infuriate and motivate real terrorists than acting to keep us safe.

Sadly that might have been the plan all along....

"Sadly, our approach may be doing more to infuriate and motivate real terrorists than acting to keep us safe."

"The body is but a vessel for the soul,
A puppet which bends to the soul's tyranny.
And lo, the body is not eternal,
For it must feed on the flesh of others,
Lest it return to the dust whence it came.
Therefore the soul deceives and despises."

needs to be heard
