New Hampshire TV is Secretly Amazing

Ok Please everyone stop whining and complaining about the AD. Its not that bad and I secretly think its ingenious.

1.The whole point of the ad is as a precursor to 1 minute ads that will be good and slick and show the Dr. in the way we all know and love. But if you want people to pay attention to that ad you have to have them aware of Ron Paul first so they don't tune it out.

2. That ad gets your attention right away because Ron Paul looks uncomfortable being a "slick politician" from the start AND IMMEDIATELY afterwards a supporter states that they don't agree with everything Ron Paul believes but they TRUST him because he is so honest. This is brilliant. Have you ever heard a politician say this before? The answer is NO. BUT its true for every single politician out there. You are never going to find someone you see eye to eye with on every single issue. The fact alone that someone states this immediately gets everyones attention. Remember that this is toward the older crowd.

3. Now that your attention has been brilliantly captured by an ad that is atypical and refreshingly honest you as a New Hampshiran are inundated with a dozen or so citizens from your states all giving different reasons to love and support Ron Paul. POSITIVE reinforcement. If so many people love ron paul well I just better pay attention to him.

4. You complain about it not being grassroots. The whole point of the ad is its unslick atypical grassroots feel. You can't complain both ways.

5. In the long run this ads affect is more subliminal and people will forget everything about it over time except that a lot of people in their state love Ron Paul and its ok for you to love him too. Then they will pay attention to his future ads more and talk to their neighbors friends relatives etc...

Oquirrh- War on Drugs (actually some drugs)

The good Dr. only wishes to end this policy on the Federal level where we spend over $40BILLION annually for cannabis prohibition. 12 states have already voted to allow for medical use, yet the current policy of the Federal Govt is to go into those states, harass the citizenry and violate their rights... citing such things as RICO statues and compelling federal need. All the while continuing the black market and creating a growth industry for law enforcement and prison industries... yes industries. By allowing states to set their standards and work locally we stop that drain on scarce resources, we respect states rights, and we can also stem the tide of incremental militarization of our police forces. I ask you, how often have you heard of a "drug dealer" that cards or checks for legal ID? Take away the black market, tax it (as repellant as taxation may be) and let the states decide. The drug war is a dismal failure and rife with unintended consequences, we have lost extensive rights to that ridiculous cause over the last 30 years.... If you believe the current hysteria from ONDCP drugs are more plentiful, stronger than before... how can that be? Aren't we making progress?... and by the way look up the LD50 for cannabis, compare that to H20. Then do the same for alcohol or any other state sponsored mind altering substance that you see advertising for on a daily basis.... Think, evaluate, think some more. And then look for the bodies.

He isn't trying to establish a minimum RDA for these substances with these policy changes... he is merely putting the Federal Govt back in the box where it rightfully belongs. It will force new generations of parents to actually be honest with their children and teach them something other than to turn that responsibility over to yet another govt entity. Nothing is preventing you from being against these substances whatever they may be. But Federal intervention isn't working, and is based on lies and fearmongering.

It's so secretly amazing

That nobody will know it's amazing. It's a terrible ad. If the five things listed above were the goal of the ad it still could have been done in a much, much better way. Saturday Night Live will be making fun of this one next.

agree...

yah, i agree, a commercial designed to put you to sleep in 10 seconds... it should be bottled as a sleep-aid

I liked the ad ...

...because it ISN'T some glossy show for a "slick" politician. I liked that Ron Paul looked just a bit awkward (the expression "beware the eloquent tongue" comes to mind), and I liked that the ad appeared to use real people instead of polished actors.

It was simple & to the point, throwing in some key position points, just enough to pique curiosity for anyone interested in those issues.

I think Ron Paul looked more like an average American rather than an elitist "holier than thou" type. Some people are drawn to the elitist image, but people support RP so enthusiastically because he is "one of us" (as ALL politicians should be!)

I also observed that he showed different types of people - someone who looked like they live in the country, one a female student, a professional man in a tie, a professionally dressed woman, etc.... showing his appeal to a wide array of people. That was well done.

I showed the ad to someone else who generally supports RP but is not all that enthusiastic (yet), and they thought it was a good ad too.

I guess the only way to know if this ad is successful is if it brings NH residents to register and vote for Ron Paul.

Witness the POWER of an IDEA - the MASSIVE Ron Paul Rallies! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hgsg7a-Ok8Q

Brilliant!

Good point. Starting off with the "i may disagree with him, but I know he's for real" message is something that i've never heard before, and something that I think might really resonate. NH folk, and to a degree Iowans too, want a straight shooter. They want to size'em up like a horse: look'em in the mouth, and see if they pass muster.

I still suggest that more great ads could be produced by the campaign than by the Campaign. Let's keep'em coming!

Morality

What I still disagree with is the deciet. In order for this add to be seen in a positive light you have to assume that people are blind, or sheeplike, or at least need their information pre-digested. I find this kind of assumption to be disrespectful. I thought that most of us would be against subliminal manipulation. I would prefer to show people the truth and let them decide, rather than trying to manipulate them. On the other hand, I don't know what motivates the official staff in their decisions and I would prefer to give them the benefit of the doubt. Maybe they can't tell that it's cheesy.

I understand but...

First, we need to stop calling them sheep... Call them what they really, people that are too overworked and tired to care about much of anything anymore other than a mindless TV fix at the end of a long day.

Second, if you think that we can turn the entire country into "activists", you are wrong. And if you think we can fully explain the ramifications on our economic policy to a lot of people that barely know what the "gold standard" even is, once again, that's wrong.

I have discussed these issues with a number of people and convinced many. They were friends, and I respected their intelligence and took the time to explain WHY I believe the things that I do.

But if you think we have time to convince the nation through an educated non-traditional approach, once again, that is wrong.

We give them the highlights. If they CHOOSE to research, great... If not, then let him decide with just the talking points.

It is now time that we approach the masses... And convince them of our concerns. We need not bother them with the details, unless they CHOOSE to be bothered with them.

We HIDE NOTHING. So no, it is NOT decietful in that regard.

I'm not going to stop calling them 'sheeple', because that's what they are. It is easy to lead sheep. 90% of the country is asleep at the wheel, don't think for themselves, don't do the research, and actually could care less. I call them sheeple because they do what they're told without thinking about it, they WANT to be led and told what they can and can't do. We are so brainwashed that it even surprised me when people booed Ron Paul at the last debate when he said 70% of the country wanted us out of this war. How ignorant, stupid, and sheeple like is that? We can only do what we can do, and hope most of the sheeple are apathetic enough not to bother to vote.

I know you can't turn the entire country into activists. Hell, you can't even turn 20% into activists. "We give them the highlights". That in itself is saying they're sheeple, that we can't present hard facts, we have to do what Hollywood does, sway with stupidity and subliminal coercing. I'm sorry, but thats the facts. More people are waking up, but I fear it's not fast enough.

Just like the post below, "I heard Ron Paul wants to legalize drugs" and I can't vote for him if that's the case. Only know what you're told, don't think for yourself, logic and reason out the door. It's no wonder we're in the state we're in. If you really want to do something good, educate your fellow sheeple, you'd be surprised when you throw common sense at them how they take to it, and throw off their indoctrination.

Plenty of time for education...

AFTER he is elected.

Or, if they WANT to be educated, they are more than welcome to research themselves. But that vast majority of people who are too busy to mind the fires of liberty ARE who pick the President.

And I find that when beginning a discussion, it always helps to get the other person on my side if I insult them first. It works everytime....

As long as you treat voters like the enemy, we are going to be fighting the whole way.

Just because they choose to live and fight differently than us does not make them insult worthy.

I heard Ron Paul wants to legalize drugs.

"I heard Ron Paul wants to legalize drugs, I am not sure that I could vote for him if that is what he is planning to do. I heard that too, and did you hear that he wants to get rid of the Department of Education?"
"He does seem to be honest though, and that would be refreshing."

Kent

DOE

Why do we need a federal department of education? Why do we need the federal government indoctrinating children at the local level? Why do we give the local tax dollars to the federal government so they can dole it back out to us, only to have their "rules" attached? Wouldn't it be better to keep that money to begin with, and use it for your local schools without big brother federal government interference, you must do this you must do that? The department of education is a joke. There is no way in hell I would send my kids to 'publik skools';

harm

If you have not harmed another person or property, threatened immenantly to do so, or had a sworn complaint with evidence of harm issued against you, then there is no crime committed. What's so hard to understand about that?

It's a principle of self ownership. And it's unconstitutional

Who owns you? If the government owns you like a cow, then it is right and proper that they tell you what goes into your body. However, if you own yourself as a free person, with rights given to you by your creator, no man nor organization may interfere in what you do to yourself, like drug taking, or eating fatty foods. They may not tell you who or how to love, either.

If you have to change the constitution by amendment(18th) to enact alcohol prohibition, what do you have to do to enact drug prohibition?
Without amendment, "The War on drugs" is totallly unconstitutional, and the police are violating drug users constitutional rights. In my opinion, the police who swear to defend the Constitution, are the criminals.

A federal Department of Education isconstitutionally not allowed by the 10th Amendment of the Bill of Rights, as follows:
The powers not delegated to the United States by the Constitution, nor prohibited by it to the States, are reserved to the States respectively, or to the people.

Plainly, any agency or power not enumerated in the Constitution, is unconstitutional.

The states may have departments of education or the congress may authorize it by amending the Constitution.

Ron Paul believes that government is very dangerous without a rulebook.

Don't you?

"The danger is not that a particular class is unfit to govern. Every class is unfit to govern. Power tends to corrupt, and absolute power corrupts absolutely.
Liberty is not a means to a higher political end. It is itself the highest political end"~Lord Acton

"Timid men prefer the calm of despotism to the tempestuous sea of liberty" TJ

Not legalized but decriminalized, a big difference

Take Prostitution in Nevada.

When you place responsible monitoring on "sinful" activities it takes away the criminal element and allows better enforcement of lawful acts and maintains a cleaner environment.

Those who want to participate will do so legal or not. When it is governed rather than made illegal, oversight is much easier and violent crime actually goes down.

Amsterdam is a good model of how decriminalized drug has not caused millions of people to become wards of the state (unlike the US) and overall lower violent crime has been charted since this has taken place.

I will be voting for Ron Paul, even if he is not nominated

I will be voting for Ron Paul, even if he is not nominated

I was an early critic as well...

But the more I watch it, the more I like it...

Do you know why the acting seems bad? Well, beside the fact that it IS bad... :) It's because we are comparing it to thousands of real life testimonials we have all heard.

But real life testimonials are jarring to your average TV watcher.

None of us are marketing experts, but from the few things that I do know... For this type of ad, you need to get attention, that first comment definitely does that... And ads are not meant to get people to think, that is not what they are doing while watching TV. They are meant to put thoughts in a persons head, that hopefully they are unaware of even where they come from when they think back later...

That may sound deceitful, and it is... When most people hear something 3 times, especially from 3 different sources, but even from the same source if it is something like TV, that's when they assimilate it as a part of their knowledge base.

Then later, they will repeat it as fact, further reinforcing it with people that they know.

A simple example and one that I recognize but can't seem to shake. I heard CarMax was honest about their deals both directions. I heard this enough times with cheesy acting on TV that I started repeating it to friends when the subject would come up. A friend took the advice and went to CarMax. And then I sat down and thought, where did I hear that? I didn't know.... Later, watching TV, I saw the commercial and it occured to me. Now, even though I know that has been artificially pumped into my head. I STILL tell me people that... But my friend's good experience with them has confirmed for me that it truly is ok to push them... But I push them because the thought is in my head, not because my friend had a good experience...

And before anyone blasts me for being so stupid as to fall for it... Understand this, we all fall for it, all the time... If it didn't, the advertising industry would die.

Much of the praise connected

Much of the praise connected with this ad reminds me of art patrons who bend over backwards to appreciate obvious junk just because the critics said it was good.

It isn't good. This ad insults everyone who watches it.

Senior citizens are not totally stupid. Many of them fought in Vietnam. We (or better said the campaign staff) should remember the tone and timbre of the Vietnam generation and talk to them because they have now become our senior generation. This ad might work for the people who are now in their nineties.

If the next ad is similar to this then we do have a problem. Let's just wait a bit and see if the "art patrons" are right.

..Without the truth we have nothing

I'm convinced

At first I thought the ad fell short. I thought it was tame. Then after some objective thought I looked at it from the perspective of someone that had never been exposed to Ron Paul before. It was perfect. It was exactly the opposite of what the finger pointing and name calling politicians we are all so familiar with would have presented. It was honest, upbeat and free from the tensions of gloom and doom. It was the type of ad that didn't assault your senses. It was proud. It was a neighbor helping a neighbor. It was a Thanksgiving dinner with family. It was what we represent. Be thankful and supportive of this amazing creation. It was a foundation laid to be strong.

Apparently people can be

Apparently people can be incredibly ingenious in finding reasons why a bad ad is actually a good one. You can have a different kind of ad than Romney ('unslick') and still have a GOOD ad. For the love of god, this isn't about taste or demographics, it's about quality.
Youtube vids are refreshing and honest, this TV ad was supposed to be slick; to target non-Youtubers and to assure them that Ron Paul is in fact a top-tier candidate just like Mitt Romney.

It's not secretly anything

It's blatantly horrible.

The ad

At first I was put back by the ad. But I am quite willing to wait and see where the campaign takes it from here before I start bashing it. If it's just an appetizer, I can't wait for the main course, and I'm sure Dr. Paul will pull no punches in N.H.

I've watched the ad at least

I've watched the ad at least six times and I still have no idea what was said... nobody watches the conductor when the train is off the tracks, plowing into the dirt, and catching fire. The ad is awful... no way around it.

You know, Ron Paul is catching on!

I agree 100%. This is a great ad. It hits a lot of issues in only 30 seconds. National did a great job!

Good post.

Good post.

I agree

I am aghast at some people actually suggesting Ron Paul do a typical Romneyesque polished advertisement. Although youtube video ads are great and look 'better', this ad really compresses a lot in 30 seconds.

Forget the corny and cheesiness, in TV Ad world that's what sells.

I'm sure this ad will pay for itself TENFOLD in free advertising from even the critics and news shows. As always they may try to make a negative opinion of this, however, if they play the whole ad people will just be drawn to it and the campaign.

This ad is one big "Who Is Ron Paul?" on TV.

Corniness works when it's intentional!

Not when you can tell someone made some kind of effort to make a real sincere ad...but then we get this pile out of it

the add was no Bruce Lee fight clip.

Maybe we are just too comfortable seeing Dr. Paul kickin ass as Bruce Lee and batman.
