Paul, who came in second in the Nevada caucuses, actively worked to ensure his supporters attended both the county and state conventions.
His contingent came to the state convention prepared for battle. They had a row of printers to print ballots for their supporters to the national convention. They set up a communications network using text messages to cell phones to make sure everyone voted correctly on motions that would benefit their effort. And they scoured the rules for opportunities to level the playing field.
"On the one side you have a candidate with principles, on the other side you have Tammany Hall," said Kelly Edinger, a Reno Paul supporter. "I'm in it for Ron Paul. I still believe he can win."
Earlier in the day, former Gov. Mitt Romney, who won the Nevada Caucuses, delivered a speech calling for a unified backing of McCain.
"I know Americans are going to choose a great patriot, a man who has been tested and proven," he said to loud cheers.
But Paul's 10-minute speech drove the crowd of 1,200 delegates into frenzied applause. They interrupted him repeatedly with standing ovations.
Acknowledging that he likely won't win the nomination, Paul said his presidential campaign will continue as long as he has supporters.
"Our campaign has continued, is doing well and improving, even though we know exactly what the numbers are," Paul said. "But the message is worthwhile. Your vote can really count if you vote for limitation of government power and spending."
Reactions
Some longtime party activists complained about what they called a disruptive influence on the proceedings. Others thought it pointless since McCain has enough delegates nationally to secure the nomination.
"McCain won fair and square," Boulder City delegate Daniel Hancock said to thunderous boos and cat calls. "So, at this point we are electing delegates not to fight out the nomination in Minneapolis, but probably rewarding people loyal to the party.
"We need to strike a compromise between perfect democracy and getting things done."
After Paul supporters displayed their strength by forcing a rules change with two-thirds of the vote, Bill Brainard, of Sparks, said he had no doubt they would elect most of the delegates to the national convention.
"We will be marginalized (at the national convention)," Brainard said. "We will be marginalized because we're a bunch of kooks. Am I concerned? Yeah."
Paul spokesman Jeff Greenspan said the walkout was a first in his 21-year career in politics.
"I've seen factions walk out, I've never seen a party walk out," he said. "I've never even heard of that."
I will repeat it again, so you get what happened.

And we concentrated on rules and delegates not platform- this helped expidite and caught the gop flat footed- we also did not alienate the other candidates delegates for future use

It's not what you don't know that gets you,
it's what you think you know and is wrong:
"But at the end of the day, part of the job of being a national delegate is to do what is best for the party in November. And that means supporting the party's nominee."
Bull Crap!

Dear Mr. Pearce:
I was wondering if you knew that the GOP had the Peppermill's Tuscany BallRoom for two days, Saturday and Sunday. I contacted several employees and they confirmed the Republican National Convention was happening for two days. Paperwork went out confirming the same thing.
I was wondering if you had been curious as to why the rumor of paying a person $70,000 to organize this event and why Senator Bob Beers did not choose to reconvene on Sunday?
I have noticed that in Texas, Montana, Missouri, and other states they have their state convention set up for two and three days.
Would it not cost a lot more money to reschedule such an event? Does this cost us the taxpayers? Senator Bob Beers has stated that it would have cost a lot more money to keep the stage hands, videographers, etc. What about the cost to the delegates that are representing the people of our state, is this not an enormous burden on them as well. However, I feel that it would cost a lot more for a do-over event. Why were the preceedings not finished?
I thought as a journalist you would be interested to finding some of these things out and reporting them to the public. We the People would like to know.
Thank you for all your forthright reporting for all these years.
Sincerely,
A Channel 8 watcher and An a American.
Found your post...
excellent!

'I always thank of all you canvassors and precinct leaders and delegates who were at the front line and caucuses.
Good luck out there &Thank you. You're a gift.
Tell everyone
you know that they need to be at the Peppermill NOW in RENo to support Ron Paul.....the debacle continues....
Remember John Mccain
finished fifth from the BOTTOM of his class.
And that was out of a class
And that was out of a class of nearly 900!!!
McCain was basically the worst cadet out of 900!! Good grief, what has the GOP got themselves into with this guy.
...
How appropriate, now that
How appropriate, now that McCain seems to have his head permanently stuck up his own bottom!

another post I copied to add to this one, thanks.
Today, Friday, we had our State Platform Committee meeting. What a success it was! Some of the planks we passed will make you proud:
- Repeal of McCain Feingold.
- Fully Informed Juries
- Repeal of the Federal Reserve
- U.S. take back the minting of currency with a gold and/or silver standard
- Tighter controls & accountings of electronic voting machines
- Abolishment of Dept of Education
- A literal interpretation of the Constitution by our elected officials.
- No unfunded mandates
- Several states rights issues
and more. It's too late to run out to the car to get my notes, but it was very rewarding being on this committee. The Ron Paul people stuck together & many of their ideals were also those of the old guard. This Platform still has to be approved at the convention tomorrow, but I'll keep you posted. Dr. Paul spoke at a rally we had tonight at which many of the delegates were present. Pray that we accomplish our goal tomorrow to elect all our delegates to the national convention!!!! Maybe we'll win some more people over to our side when Ron speaks tomorrow. Everyone send all their best thoughts to Reno, Nevada!!!
Thanks to all on the
Thanks to all on the platform committee for your hard work! I was blown away when I first read it - looked like it had been mostly written by RP supporters. Met a guy named Grant from Elko who said he had been on the committee too (maybe the chair?).
I was amazed again when the platform was passed without going through it plank by plank and arguing each one.
That guy who came up to the mike and was worried that we were "blinding" the military and homeland security by advocating the revocation of the Patriot act was a hoot.
Many thanks for a fantastic job!!!
Yes, thank you
And, thanks to all who were able to vote it in. My worry now, is whether the convention, when and if reconvened, will "redo" any of the agenda items previously passed. Not sure of the legalities, but I can't imagine that HQ was completely happy with it. "Their" candidate of choice had one of his co-sponsored bills McCain/Feingold quashed in the platform...ever notice how many of his bills and friends are democrats? It really spins my head that there can be support for someone who has difficulty financing his own campaign and following the rules of a law he helped establish. What kind of conservative leader does that make?
IT'S DOABLE

What is the agenda
What is going to happen now are they going to keep you out of the loop completely and you will not be able to get the job done?
Hopefully the campaign and grassroots will coordinate
the efforts and this will not be a fiasco of 'keeping them out of the loop' according to the "rules" they cannot do that, but the proof is in the pudding.
Yes, thank you

I am concerned about the Tax dollars, from what i have been hear
nevada is practically broke, how in the world do they plan on putting on another convention when Mr. Beers seem so worried about paying for the current one. The cost of a new one is probably incredibly high!
This is important for other state conventions to be aware of
participate in.
