GOP Last Month: NV Convention May Take 2 Days!!
Here is further proof that the NV GOP's claim that they had to end the convention at the Peppermill in Reno at 6:00 yesterday is complete BS...
Below is a quote from an official document I received at the Washoe County GOP Convention on March 15 (six weeks ago) which clearly shows that they anticipated the NV state convention this weekend might take two days...
This is a 4-page document which is part of the main handout we received at our Washoe County Convention, which was also at the Peppermill in Reno.
The title of this section is "Report of Proposed Rules - Washoe County Republican Convention - 2008". On the third page there is a heading, "ELECTION OF THE STATE CONVENTION DELEGATES". Item number 37 under that heading states:
"The Nevada Republican Party State Convention will be held in Reno at the Peppermill on April 26, 2008. It may be one or two days of business. It will cost approximately $100.00 per delegate. The Business of the Convention must include election of the State Central Committee, adoption of a State Platform, election of At-Large Delegates to the Republican National Convention in St. Paul Minnesota."
So... Clearly the GOP anticipated over a month ago that this might take two days and wanted to warn potential delegates to be prepared for that possibility. They also said the convention would be at the Peppermill in Reno on April 26, so I think most reasonable people would conclude that if a second day was needed it would happen at the Peppermill in Reno on April 27. Doesn't that make sense?
For them to then claim yesterday that they only had the meeting room until 6:00 with no contingency plans or budget if it ran longer is clearly BS. If anyone needs any further evidence that this was a dishonest, dirty trick, this should settle it.
The really sad thing is that around a thousand of the delegates traveled a long distance at substantial personal expense to attend. For the NV GOP to prematurely "recess" the convention and force the delegates to spend more of their personal money to again travel when it reconvenes is the height of disrespect.
I did not register and pay the fees until last Thursday. When I appeared at the Washoe County GOP office to pay and register, they asked me why I had waited so close to the convention (just out of curiosity, I think). I told them that I had not been 100% sure I would be attend, and didn't want to pay until I was certain. Now, if the convention reconvenes in Vegas, I will either not be able to attend, or I will have to spend hundreds of dollars to go. This is outrageous treatment of the 1,300+ delegates who have already sacrificed much to participate in this process.
At least the NV GOP leaves no legitimate question about who and what they really are. Their statements suggesting that the RP supporters are somehow to blame for the convention not finishing by 6:00 on Saturday are completely false and obviously dishonest when weeks ago potential delegates were being told that it might last two days.

Convention....NV
Randy, I've heard rumors that the room was booked for both days and if people had stayed, it was possible to stay an additional 3 hours on Saturday night. There was even a suggestion...and many agreed...that they would have paid into a fund to rent the room for additional time. No, this, I fully believe was a ploy. They need time to rethink and strategize. It stinks, frankly. I wonder about the money element. Why have these expensive political functions if it is a foregone conclusion as to who the nominee will be? Ron Paul has paid his monies, has been campaigning and speaking for his platform, represented the Republican Party in a honorable and conservative manner...why is he discounted? Did you notice all the banners in the convention meeting room read "McCain?" Because some other group of people has decided to make the decisions for us. Yes, apparently it looks like McCain (who at one time the majority of people in Nevada voted against), has the number of delegates for winning the nomination at nationals, but that is presumptive, not necessarily so. People are, I truly, truly have seen this first hand, are waking up.
You and I also gave money to participate based upon our previous voting record and election from our districts to county and state conventions, and I believe we are being disenfranchised by not being allowed to represent our areas and their wishes. Sounds a bit fraudulent, but I'm certainly no attorney. I would like to know what the results of the vote we did make for the 9 delegates are Now, I'd like an apology from the Chair for recess without vote or explanation, and I'd like to know immediately when we will reconvene in RENO. I understand that Heidi Smith knows the importance and correctness of the meeting being held in Reno and she is working to keep it here. That's what I'd like, but I have no idea what is possible legally. Keep up the pressure...they see us coming down the track.
IT'S DOABLE
Alpacas - IT'S DOABLE
Paulette, Yes, I agree that
Paulette, Yes, I agree that it appears the room was rented for two days. Around 2:00 on Sunday afternoon I spoke via phone with the Peppermill bell captain and he said that his "readerboard" showed the GOP convention taking place all day "today" beginning at nine in the morning. I asked, "Are you talking about Sunday... Today? ....It definitely says Sunday, not just Saturday?" And he said yes, definitely, it was showing the meeting scheduled for Sunday.
I know that sometimes people make mistakes, but he sounded very certain and credible. Also, our Washoe county materials from our county convention last month said (rule #37 on page 3 of 4) that the state convention on April 26, "...may be one or two days of business."
Seems completely unbelievable to me that they had no contingency plan for the meeting to continue beyond 6:00 on the first day when official printed materials from last month specifically warned potential state delegates that it may be a two day obligation.
I emailed Heidi Smith today and urged her to do everything possible to keep the convention in Reno - the specified location where the convention was to take place.
If that doesn't happen, and I am able to go (there are some dates over the next couple weeks that I just cannot leave town), I will drive to Vegas and will have seats for 5 more in my Caravan. Guess that would be a good way to get better acquainted with other like-minded RP folk in the area. If that works out, I would hope to take some who would otherwise find the trip expense a hardship.
I am also seeing more people waking up... realizing that RP is still an active candidate. I spoke with two acquaintances over the last 24 hours who had been aware of RP but thought he didn't have a chance and believed that he had dropped out. Now they are far more interested and are realizing that the previously unthinkable just might happen.
I find myself beginning to become cautiously excited and hopeful again. Love your tag line: IT'S DOABLE. Yes, I believe it is. :o)
2:40 pm - Just called Rene
2:40 pm - Just called Rene Peppermill and something is going on. Leaving right now. @!#$@#$!!
let everyone you know...
know!!!!
Nope, got there about 3:15
Nope, got there about 3:15 and nothing going on. Have posted extensively in other threads - details there. Apparently there was no meeting today but a couple hundred unhappy delegates were there this morning according to hotel employees working near the ballroom where we met yesterday.
Are there enough committee
Are there enough committee members within the ranks of the meetups to constitute a quorum?
**the soul would have no rainbow if the eyes had no tears**
Unfortunately I don't think
Unfortunately I don't think so. Based on the attempt last night to constitute a quorum after the GOP elite left, I think the minimun number was 709 or thereabouts. We were a little over 100 short. A bunch of McCain supporters were hiding nearby so they wouldn't be counted to help make a quorum, but could quickly return in case we succeeded at getting the meeting going again.
It sure would have been amazing if we had managed to obtain a quorum... Thiings could have been completed very quickly - heh, heh!
