Badass!
That was awesome. And no you dont need apples aporval. I am sure all of that footage is royality free. Apple doesnt have a monopoly on open domain images with voiceover.
Good point, but...
Okay, maybe they don't need legal approval but if they do it without Apple's endorsement, it would probably just look really bad that the campaign is using Apple's creativity without Apple at least agreeing to its usage.
Apple's Approval
I don't think anyone's said this yet, but regardless of anything else the campaign would have to get Apple's approval really. Or rather their endorsement. Either way, I love these ads. The campaign could in theory use it. I agree certain sections could be changed and putting in Jefferson and company would be awesome. Maybe the famous John Trumbull painting. That would be cool. Just as long as the theme of people made sense in the context of the campaign.
I said it.
Please read my post below. I'm a 20-year Macintosh user and professional Mac support consultant, very familiar with Apple's products and culture. And I hated these ads, with their smug, self-righteous superior tone. I love Apple's products (mostly), but their attitude really annoys me sometimes.
And no, of course Apple (and Apple's ad agency) wouldn't give permission for their ad to be used in this way. This "ad" is clearly a violation of copyright as it stands.
Perhaps something sort of similar, with a completely different set of people and completely different text, might be useful. But Ron Paul is not a radical, revolutionary, rebel or anything similar, at least in the way the public understands those terms, and associating him with any such ideas would be suicide for the campaign.
In any case, I see no need to be cutesy or coy in advertising Ron Paul; that's what I hated about the first official NH ad. Ron Paul can represent himself already better than any clever indirection. See my post just below for a link to a new "unofficial" ad in which he does just that. Now that hits the spot.
The REAL Best Ron Paul Ad Ever...
As an ad for general consumption, I think this is the best I've seen:

Whether the campaign could use this (rights problems?) I don't know, but it covers the ground perfectly, and it rocks.
That one deserves its own
That one deserves its own thread.

Totally Agree
The ad that you selected is excellent. There are some other really good ones but they run longer than one minute. Nice post.
“Just look at us. Everything is backwards; everything is upside down. Doctors destroy health, lawyers destroy justice, universities destroy knowledge, governments destroy freedom, the major media destroy information and religions destroy spirituality”

Completely Agree
This is the best Ad ever.
I agree
I agree, it was almost perfectly edited, and hit all the right buttons.

Everybody, and I mean everybody......
Get a Ron Paul sticker on your car......even if it's a small one!

Wow, great video
This video gave me goose bumps. It is so true I hope the campaign people use it.

There is a Porsche commercial very similar to this.

Gave me goosebumps.
It is beautiful....
The other night one of the posters here said that lately all of the videos have been making her cry and she wondered if she was the only one who was that overjoyed with Dr. Paul's message that she was moved to tears....
Well, your not =) I too have found myself more and more emotional about this campaign. Not because I think Dr. Paul is some kind of God...cause I know he's just a mere man...but I think it's more to do with the fact that you can just FEEL the honesty of him...the fact that he really and truly CARES for US!
I really hope Kleenex is not a company on the banned list...because I'm burning thru those bad boys....lol
Next September, maybe...
IF Ron Paul wins the Republican nomination, something sort-of similar to this might be useful. Right now, however, it would be a disaster. Besides, of course, being a complete ripoff of one of Apple's "Think Different" ad series from the mid-1990s:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Think_Different
Most of the figures in the ad would be immediate poison for the "conservative" Republican base which the campaign must reach during primary season. It's great that Ron Paul's appeal reaches across conventional party lines, but in the real world, right now, all the "liberal" and "independent" young folks who're flocking to the rallies and online forums are irrelevant, because they can't vote in most Republican primaries.
In fact, what we need to do now, if we want to win, is be careful not to wave around pictures of John Lennon (much though I love him), Bob Dylan, Muhammad Ali, Jim Henson, Ted Turner (!), even Martin Luther King, Jr. Associating Ron Paul with any of these figures is possibly the quickest way to kill him in the primaries. What needs to be emphasized now is that Ron Paul has more respect for "the rules" -- the real rules, i.e. the Constitution -- than the other candidates. Which, in fact, he does.
And, although one of Dr. Paul's most endearing traits is his sincerely open-minded tolerance, he really doesn't have a lot in common with most of the people in this ad, other than the fact that he's presently bucking the status quo. He really is a conservative mid-America Christian who's never taken any drugs (not even alcohol) nor been part of the "counterculture" in any way. He actually isn't looking to "shake things up" or "do something new"; he wants to return to something old, i.e. the truth that never changes.
When I met Ron Paul in 1988, what deeply struck me was the fact that, although he and I have little in common culturally, spiritually we were on the same wavelength. But there's no way to express that in a TV ad; it's an intuitive realization. But then, of course, I'm a former liberal; thirty years ago, before I woke up, I probably wouldn't have "gotten" Ron Paul at all.
On further thought, I would prefer to see no attention brought to this "ad" at all, because it's perfect for Ron Paul's opponents. All any of them -- Giuliani, Romney, Huckabee -- would have to do is put this on the air (assuming Apple would give permission, which of course they wouldn't) and show Republican voters in NH, NY or anywhere who Ron Paul's "real" supporters are, and the Ron Paul Revolution would be over. Finis. Dead in the water. The End. And we could all just go home and think about how to survive eight years (probably more) of Hillary.
yep
I think your right...not a good add, not with some of the people in it.. Ted Turner that commie jerk??? I think this add idea could be very good if there were some different people they were comparing Ron Paul to in the add.

What you said. You just said it before I did.
Give the ad maker some slack
The ad may not appeal to everyone precisely as we think it should. Overall, I think it is an excellent idea. If it is going to be tweeked it should be toward finding what the essence of the ad is and making it bring that out more. The key word is "appeal." Who says a positive appeal is always more effective than a negative one. I have personally been won over to certain ideas not always because they made me feel good but because I was being challenged in ways that stirred me emotionally and caused me to look at things on a much deeper level than I was accustomed to. Such is my ongoing experience with Ron Paul himself. I never gave much thought to much of what he has been conveying because I was too busy resisting the opposite end of what I was standing for.
Something to think about, I suppose. This is only one ad among numerous others and it is a very, very good one because it hooks me on a deep level. It is also not the sole ad upon which the life of Ron Paul depends. What this ad won't do to help RP, others will do in some way or another. We need to keep things in perspective.
Sorry, this is a no go...
Personally, I enjoyed the ad. I've seen it a few times before and its always good.
However, this cannot be used. First reason, that is the voice of Richard Dreyfus. The audio is most likely copyrighted by Apple, or Dreyfus could demand royalties. Second, and the most important, we are still running in the Republican primary. The "leftist progressive" imagery will never work for a "righty conservative" crowd. You and I might enjoy it, but remember most states have closed primaries in which only (R) can vote in the Republican primary. There is no way we have or will have the time to convince enough Democrats, Independents, Greens, Libertarians to switch their party affiliation and override current GOP members en masse. We must create something that can appeal to everyone, including current Republicans, and that... is the real challenge.

That ad was fantastic! A byte from that in a 45 second ad would be dynamite!
Canada Loves Ron Paul
Canada Loves Ron Paul
A couple of suggestions.
I agree that this is a beautiful ad. I can resonate with it because I see myself as one of those depicted in the ad (even though I've never made the headlines and I'm basically invisible to all but a few people.)
I would like to respectfully suggest that a good combination of "crazies" should be used so that it neither tips more to the left nor the right. Ron Paul is a true conservative, which is not at all what we are seeing currently. I think he once said true conservatism comes very close to true liberalism (correct me if I'm wrong.) If Paul can speak well of Kucinich then that should say something about the open mindedness of a true conservative, even if he or she can disagree on certain issues. Likewise, (sort of) I would keep John Lennon in the ad and I would put him right alongside Goldwater, and I would maybe include another true conservative and keep the rest of the ad as it is. But I would not use someone like Nixon, for intsance. He despised John Lennon, who was simply challenging the status quo. I very much like the idea that Gandhi is in this. From what I understand he is one of Ron Paul's heroes. Overall, a well balanced combination would make it sort of universal, somewhat like Ron Paul's message in which there are some things about it that people agree with and some things they don't agree with while at the same time he makes good sense to everyone where it matters most. Of course, those who are stuck at the extreme ends of the liberal/conservative spectrum will be the hardest to dislodge no matter what we do.
Put another way, if we were to ask Ron Paul himself what he felt about the "crazies" being used in this ad, I am sure he would see where they made the most sense in terms of liberty and freedom, etc. regardless of party affiliation and the way each went about challenging the status quo and he would comment positively on that even though there might be certain aspects of the individual in question that he would not regard favorably. So, I'm just saying, if we could see this through the eyes of Ron Paul himself (if that were possible) we might come closer to making the ad more what it should be like.
Very nice ad. It moved me from deep within.
add
people thought that washington, jefferson and most of our founding fathers were a little mad for taking on the most powerful country in the world at that time.. there are many more people in history that Ron Paul could be compared to other than some of those socialist liberals.. sorry to step on toes but i think an add like that would hurt.. you don't want Ron Paul associated with ted turner..
"Ineptocracy: a system of government where the least capable to lead are elected by the least capable of producing, and where the members of society least likely to sustain themselves or succeed are rewarded with goods and services paid for by the confisc
As creative as it is (thanks
As creative as it is (thanks to an Apple-paid ad agency), it is a TERRIBLE ad for the Republican primary. Why? Well, let's see... Conservatives, almost by definition, are averse to change, and this is the entire theme of the ad. But it gets worse. The ad prominantly features famous leftists and anti-conservatives such as John Lennon and Ted Turner.
Seriously guys, I know a lot of you don't come from a conservative background, but please, try to put yourself in their place and ask yourself, what would a CONSERVATIVE want to see/hear?
Yeah, there is still time in some states to convert Democrats and Independents, and in open primary states, that may be a worthwhile goal. But in closed primary states, I think that strategy has the lowest return on investment compared to targetting conservatives with a properly presented message.
Just because it's an Apple ad...
...doesn't mean the gist of the idea can be used.
Rewrite the words, and the music, change the imagery...
but the idea of this ad should be the same.
(even better, if we put imagery of Goldwater and Reagen as "crazies")
Hmmm... How about Founding Fathers...
[...] even better, if we put imagery of Goldwater and Reagen as "crazies"
OR even BETTER YET...
Founding Fathers... Adams, Franklin, Jefferson, Washington ... Jackson, et al?
But I think it would be good to keep MLK and Ghandi in there as well (and if Ben Franklin is included, then there is already precedent for it to be people other than ex-presidents).
More I think about it, this would NOT be hard to make... I could probably do a version of it myself.
I love it!
I love it!
It is Apple...
Just found the original on You Tube. Still works, but certainly cannot be used by the campaign...
No, but on a Free Meetup created DVD...
It could easily be done.
Only thing I would change is the title & ending screen... What the heck, if we're gonna rip off an Apple ad campaign, why not go all the way:
VOTE DIFFERENT
* Note this is already one of the "slogans" on the mini-billboard "sticker" campaign: http://www.infiniteronpaul.com/
That's got to be a real ad
Its excellent. And based on a slight difference in the production values, I'm pretty sure that the final image of RP is placed in substitution of a corporate logo and slogan.
It looks like an AMEX ad, or some other big dollar production.
If I'm wrong, then hats off to the producer. And I'd love to know how they got Paul Giamati to do the voiceover.
