Emergency! We are being kicked out of the GA convention!
Submitted by adelegate on Sat, 05/17/2008 - 08:39
I am in the credentials line right now. They are refusing to honor their fee waivers. Word is going around that security may have been called. There are about 30 of us, how can we get these waivers approved and what should we do if removed from the convention?

Being a Delegate is Expensive
Here in Texas, our convention is coming up June 12 -14 (that's right, a 3 day convention), but the committees start meeting on June 9th. If you want to testify in front of the Platform Committee for your favorite resolution, for example, you'd have to arrive a couple of days early. There is a registration fee for all delegates and alternates (called a facilities use fee) of $35. Guests must be accompanied by a delegate to register & their cost is $25. They offer grassroots training one day for $10 and a prayer breakfast one morning for $15 (I think) and also a barbecue buffet one day (I forget the price for that one). There's a GOP banquet with Mitt Romney as the speaker; that's $75 per person. (We're catching an Astros game next door instead!) The discounted hotel rooms are $189 per night + tax. If you serve on a committee or want to testify in front of a committee and stay for the entire convention and participate in all related activities, a delegate / alternate to the state convention would end up paying at least $1,100!
One free event that I definitely won't miss is the Ron Paul Freedom Rally! Since this is his home state, he always hosts an old fashioned ice cream social. This year, though, it's a 2-hour rally in the ballroom of the Hilton next to the convention center.
Also, In order to be a national delegate, they require you to give them a credit card number when the state convention adjourns if you were elected! They tell you to be prepared to pay $2000 - $3000 for all of your national delegate expenses, and they want a credit card as 'proof' you can meet your 'financial obligations' as a delegate. You can only make hotel reservations and pay your deposit through the Texas GOP (to get the discount), AND you can only do it at the delegate meeting that will immediately follow the convention.
Poll tax? Sounds like it favors the wealthy to me....isn't that why such things are unconstitutional?

Let's get out of here - Columbus is a waste of time. I am leaving now.
Did I mention...
Did I mention you can contribute to help us cover the fees we paid for?

we can help. but I would take the party chairman to small claims
We can help but I would have every person that paid take the party chairman to small claims court on the fee. That will be a nightmare for whoever that is and I would let them know it before the convention is over and your fees may be returned today :)
Yes
Why is it they continue to break the law and we don't do anything about it?
"The body is but a vessel for the soul,
A puppet which bends to the soul's tyranny.
And lo, the body is not eternal,
For it must feed on the flesh of others,
Lest it return to the dust whence it came.
Therefore the soul deceives and despises."
We covered their fee
There was 15 minutes before they cut off registration, and we had around 15 people who could NOT afford to pay the fee, but had traveled all the way here to take part in the convention.
The credentials committee denied EVERY SINGLE FEE WAIVER FORM. They knew in advance that a bunch of our people were coming and would be using them.
This was a violation of Georgia Law. But they knew it wouldn't matter, as long as they kept them out of the convention NOW.
So I stepped in, and our Delegate Committee paid all of their fees, and we got EVERY ONE OF THEM in to the convention.
Turnout here is light, so if we can keep the nominations from being closed and restricted to the Old Guard slate, we might have a chance. I'm not sure what our totals are, but these guys are really really scared of us.
:-)
By the way, if you'd like to contribute to help us cover the costs of paying these delegates' way (we are an FEC-approved Delegate Committee, like a PAC), you can do so here:

Thanks!
(Also, we will be contesting these fees after the convention!)

No delegate or alternate delegate to the national convention shall be
required to pay an assessment or fee in excess of that provided by the law of the state in

Wait a sec
"in excess of that provided by the law of the state in which his or her election occurs"
So, to help adelegate, we need to find out what the GA State law provides (allows) for. Anyone have the GA State laws handy?
And it sounds like (but I'm not sure!) the STATE laws, as opposed to the GOP by-laws for Georgia.
Somebody check here!
http://www.lexis-nexis.com/hottopics/gacode/default.asp
That's the Official Code of GA for elections -- fees are mentioned 10 times -- I can't follow it up right now, as I have to run out the door soon. Can someone check here for adelegate??

(9) No delegate or alternate delegate to the national convention shall be required to pay an assessment or fee in excess of that provided by the law of the state in which his or her election occurs as a condition of serving as a delegate or alternate delegate to the national convention.
as far as I could find. GA state law does not allow fees
as far as I could find GA law does not allow fees of any kind for any type of election state party or otherwise
If all else fails
Pay the fee, take names, and let them know that you will be *outing them* and going public with their actions and will also be exploring legal remedies against them and the party leaders responsible for enforcing this fee collection or "Poll Tax".
could do that and then recoup your fee in small claims court
could do that and pay now and then take the state part chairman to small claims court. he or she will love that and pay now and recoup the fee because it is in black and white there shall be no fees to be a delegate
pay the fee
Pay the fee, get inside, get yourself to National.
FYI - I understand a "badge fee" that is used to pay for the facility is allowed in many states.

here you go here is the rule
read the GA GOP rules and they say to follow the national GOP rules so
From the national GOP Call to convention
page 9 rule 9
No fee shall be charged to become a delegate or alternate to the national convention.
If they ask you tell them you are running for alternate position or take all 30 of you and form a slate quickly on paper and turn it in and show them you are on a slate. They must follow national rules and allow those running for delegate positions to be fee free
this is from the rnc national website then just click on the convention link. then click on the call to convention button

I am on an iPhone right now and cannot copy and paste the link for you maybe someone from the dailypaul can go to the rnc national site click on convention. then click on the call to convention button. then go to rule 9 page 9
This
This is the new america. we must march 07/12/08...
go to the Republican National Website
Go to the Republican national website and print out the rule or show them the rule on your laptop or phone that there is to be no fees
You have
documentation, fee waivers, and should be on the delegates list.
Demand to see a top official and have your name checked on the delegates lists.
If you are not there, or are refused, then it's time to realize that you've been "had" and a strategy to deal with that should be determined.
This is not surprising at all, and we should all expect to see more and more of stuff like this. We must work around it if we can, and shine the light of day on them too.
