what to do without our internet

i am concerned with our communication abilities in the event of an internet takeover by the government.ive also been told that in the initial stages of martial law that phone systems will also be shut down. its not a matter of if but when.more and more ham radios do seem the best way for the exchange of information as there are a lot of operators here in the states and across the world.does anyone here have any thoughts on this? do we have any operators here that would be willing to set up communications. as always do protect your personal information .

Thanks for the Chuckle. I remember doing that as a kid. Life was so much simpler then. I also remember the C-B radios we used for years. In fact, my dad still has all of his CB equipment. He hasn't used it in years, but I'm sure it's still good.

You do need to be licensed
You do need to be licensed for Ham radio, and also need to pass a test which includes morse code, and is not easy. I almost did it once. I am thinking maybe short wave radio has some possibilities...
No code license
I think there is a no code license now. The older hams were raising a stink about it because "they had to do it." Do a search and see, I think it only gives you access to the VHF and UHF bands though. Here's a link that seems OK for telling you how to get started:

You probably don't want to go there...
the main reason that we are going to digital TV is so that analog will be freed up for authorities, remember? Like the local police, Homeland Security.. etc.
Don't be surprised if Ham Radio licences get choked off soon.
The first thing you do in a war is cut off communication.. ;)
And to respond to 13's post.. they won't want to shut off the internet.. it is thier best way to identify homegrown terrorists, remember.

thats my point. I could care less how they tack or watch. It's just fact of the matter it wont happen. I guess it could technically, but it would A. It would be so far beyond obvious as to their intentions. B. Enrage people who dont even know what the internet is( tv , phones, etc.)possibly to the point of waking their asses up ( a good thing). C. It would create a ripple effect worldwide ( like a global sys crash/overload) D. It would take physical manpower to commandeer the individual companies ( data centers, ISP's , Intranet networks) and would financially ruin those companies....creating another obvious snowball.
This is one of the few things I'm not worried about.... To those "watching"....Come and Some ... LOL ...

It ~technically~ could.... but just shutting off every business and bank transaction in America all at once isn't going to happen... and we the tiny people are a smaller thread of that.
It would take a massive effort to kill individual private connections.. with a crappy success rate. The same time you are attempting that you've just caused a big bunch of we 300 million to revolt.

Then, how many of you remember online communication before the Internet?
It is still possible to revert to text-based dialup bbs systems. In the days before the Internet such systems served admirably to keep people in the loop. Operators of the systems would forward data for other areas via long distance phone calls from time to time. It was slower, it was limited, but it worked. It seems to me it should be possible to bring such a system up to date by incorporating cell phone texting.
